Supreme Court Nominee |
| |
| President Obama is expected to name Solicitor General Elena Kagan as the supreme court nominee. She has never served as a judge yet is very smart when it comes to the law. The comments on CNN are running rampant concerning her sexuality, looks and links to Pres. Obama. I suggest we all step back and look at what kind of supreme court justice she would be. There will always be those who will complain regardless when it comes to Pres. Obama but he is only doing what he is expected to do as POTUS. I am waiting to form an opinion until I know more about her. Does anyone already have an opinion and what did they base it on? | | | | | |

| | Yes. There will always be those who will complain regardless. There will also always be those ignoring everything he does and claiming that he's only doing his best, or that we should give him more time, or any other of a number of what amounts to excuses. So it certainly works both ways on that front. And so goes the Presidency of the United States of America. My opinion before even Sotomayor was that Obama will go the affirmative action route. That certainly doesn't mean a woman and/or minority judge isn't as qualified, but I doubt anyone else is even being considered. That's a little worrisome in my opinion. And, like most presidents, he'll be sure to nominate someone sharing his ideology. I don't know much of anything about Kagan, but I'm not alone there. Elena Kagan's Wiki page has been receiving massive traffic. The actual link made it to Google's auto complete. (I don't know if the page is freshly edited and submitted or if people are just visiting so often...) If I'm understanding her correctly, she wants the president to have even more authority. I think that's something both she and Obama actually agree on. | | | | | | |

| | Thanks for the input. The President doesn't need more authority, we have the checks and balances for a reason. The President surely wouldn't nominate anyone that doesn't share his ideology but to nominate somebody based on race or gender is too affirmative action for me. I would like to see qualified, silly me! Oh the things we shall learn in the comming days. | | | |

| | I don't have a well-informed opinion, but I do have an opinion. I expected a liberal-leaning nominee and with Kagan we get one. I continue to be a little concerned over the make-up of the entire bench...two women, Kagan would help with that; all Catholics and Jews, Kagan wouldn't help with that. (There's got to be a older, female, Protestant out there somewhere...) Personally, I don't like such young justices, because their appointments are for life. I don't care to see anyone sitting on the bench for 30-40 years, conservative or liberal. | | | | | | |

| | ? The reports are five Catholics and four Protestants. Seems we could use a little diversity in this area too. Obviously several news agency's are wrong because Ruth Bader Ginsburg is Jewish. She is the only one? | | | |

| | I heard all Catholics and Jews and NO Protestants (and that was an MSNBC report and the Drudge Report). Guess I need to find out... I just want to see more diversity on the bench; something representative of our society. | | | |

| | I'm just making sure I'm reading this right: You want Affirmative Action for protestant Supreme Court justices because they're currently underrepresented? | | | |

| | Yeah, if you want to put it that way, I'd like to see more women on the bench. Probably a few more Protestants and maybe another Latina...and maybe another Black woman... And most of all those who will follow the Constitution and not legislate from the bench... | | | |

| | Hofferp, you know there isn't a Muslim on the bench, would you like one of those too? You are entitled to your opinion, and I am not bashing it. Personally, religion doesn't really matter to me, but if you want to go that route, than just wait for his next one. The lid would be blown off this country if he nominated a Muslim!!!! | | | |

| | Truth is, their religion doesn't matter to me either. And you're right, the lid would blow off if he nominated a Muslim. But now that wouldn't be very represetative now would it? | | | |

| | hofferp, I agree with you, when they are appointed for life I would also like to see a bit older ones. As for religion I think I read that with Kagan in that will leave no Protestants. Thanks for the input. | | | |

| | I love these arguments about nomonees'. Speculation about how these people will vote five years from now is always almost always wrong. There have been lots of disappointed presidents in this process. There may be one exception to this and that would be Cheif Justice Roberts, he will always be one dimensional and thar ain't no changin that. | | | | | | |

| | TTCCWW, Thanks for the bit of humor this fine morning. You couldn't be more right about CJ Roberts. Speculation about votes five years from now is one thing but these justices currently (Roberts and Kagan if comfirmed) will be voting 30 years from now, that's kind of worrisome for me. Thanks for the input. | | | |
