HOUSTON—A man was killed and his family members beaten after three suspects barged into a north Houston home Saturday afternoon, police said. Investigators said one of the suspects pretended to be a census worker to gain entry into the house, located in the 400 block of Truman. Family members said the victim’s son opened the door for the suspects, believing they were with the census. Larry Johnson Jr., the nephew of the victim, said the suspects tied up and beat his cousin and aunt after barging into to the home. Johnson said his uncle, Reginald "Pete" Haynes, walked in on the crime and was ambushed. "They tied him up and stabbed him and tried to submerge him in water," Johnson said. Haynes later died at the hospital. Family members said the men ransacked the house for two hours. "They were looking for money and my aunt gave them everything that they had and it wasn’t enough for them," Johnson said. Neighbor Randell Harmon said he even watched the suspects leave after the crime and had no idea what had happened. "I saw three gentlemen walk out and I didn’t think anything of it," Harmon said. "They didn’t look at me. They got in the truck and they left." The incident left people in the community fearful about who might come knocking at their door. "They’ve taken something precious from us," Johnson said. "They really have." Neighbors said census-takers started working their street weeks ago. According to HPD, the suspect who claimed to be a census worker showed no ID badge. Investigators said they don’t have a good description of any of the suspects. ***I think that having someone come to our homes if they did not get an completed Census report was a slick way for a killer to enter into someones home. This should have never happened. Now a man is dead because of this! Please watch this sad video. http://www.khou.com/news/local/Fake-census-worker-invades-home-kills-owner-93242534.html

This is horrible. I don't usually let people in the house no matter what, if i don't really know the person. I don't even let the delivery guy in the gate. It's dangerous nowadays. There are a lot of people like that now and you'll never know who they are exactly.

Hello my friend cream97 Ji, Your experience with reportingthis incidence is an eye opener to everyone, and aged members like us in particular. Normally, I have made up my point that no one would ever visit and knock without proper appointment. In case, census people have to viist, they must chalk out a programme and visit localities accompanied by local police. It was only yesterday that after taking appointment, one marketting Inspector visited us and i was insisting upon to show proper letter from his organisation and tehn only, he will be allowed to enter my premises. I do not think I was harsh to deal with him. Thanks for enlighting me with such case. May God bless You and have a great time.

This is such a sad story. I am so wary about answering my door to people that I do not know. I was not so much when I had my big boy Ninja here. Everyone was so scared of him. But now that I don't have him here and I'm not with a big dog again, I have to be really wary of just who I open my door to. When my grandchildren are here they know not to open the door to anyone that they do not know. They are not to go to the door to answer it to a stranger. It's a shame that we ahve to be like this but I'd rather be safe than sorry. This poor poor family.

Hi, moondancer. I agree. I am just too skeptical to just open up my door to anyone, especially if I am not expecting them. These days we just never know who is just behind these closed doors. We don't always know the motive that this person(s) has plotted up. We all should be very careful! I know after discovering this out, we will think twice about opening up our doors to anyone that is claiming that they are with the Census Bureau. Or anyone else..

That is definitely a sad story to report on. I don't even let people enter my home when I see someone I don't recognize through the peep hole. I just try to talk with them through the intercom. The census done where I am from is mailed to us to fill out so I don't have to worry about anyone impersonating a census worker.

That is really sad to hear for that family. I filled out my census form, and mailed it out promptly. Still, I have a censor worker leaving a note on my door every other day. I don't get it. We (the taxpayers) are paying these people's salaries to come to homes who have already completed the form. But I guess that is a totally different subject. I wonder how these people were dressed, and what kind of neighborhood it was. It makes you wonder if there are going to be a lot of other attacks like this happening in the United States. Just goes to show that things like this can happen anywhere. Thank you for sharing this story with us here on myLot, Cream. It just about makes you want to quit listening to the news, it is so sad. Have a better day!

hi, what a sad story? I never let anyone in my house unless they are law enforcement or I called someone to come. but just come and want to ask in formation then they have to show me something to prove that they need to come in. if not necessary then I just say I dont speak english and that is why I have my security door for.

This is why I don't open my door to anyone I do not know! And or anyone I am not expecting to visit my home.... If I do know them and they are not expected (as my house probably isn't up to standards @ that minute for company) I'll step outside and talk with them but not in my home. I wonder did they return a completed Census? If they did, I definaty would of not of opened my door.

That is really horrible. I had one experience almost the same. But i really dont open doors to strangers. It happened some time last year. I was still renting a room near my working place. Next to my rooms are nursing students (all female). They are nice and sometimes we chat and talked how they are since they called me as their older brother. The place is kinda secluded. Infront of our room doors are trees and grasses and since its like located in a secluded village so its quit and peaceful. One night, I went home due to some activities at my working place. When I arrived in the area, the lights are turned off along the hallway and their is nobody in the next room. When i went inside my room, i heard the other room opened up and heat the girls talking. I opened my door and i saw them nervous and scared. I asked them what happened and so they told me that they were robbed inside their room. They told me that around 8pm that night, while its raining, two men knock on their door. When the other girl opened the door a little bit to check who it was, a man with a cap took a knife and put it in her face and since that time the door doesnt have a lock inside so the two men went in. The other girl was sleeping and the other was studying. The other men grab the two girls inside the bathroom and locked it. While the other one told to get all there things. They took eveyrthing, from their laptops, cellphones, and their money for exams. They were all crying while telling it to them. So i did call the police and told them what happened. The owner of the place went and assist us immediately. the worst is, the next day after that incident. When I arrived late in the evening, the two men knocked on my door. I ask them from the inside who they are. And then they told me that its Uncle Sam. I was thinking who uncle Sam is since i dont know anyone with that name. I was thinking that they are just using the name of the owner of the place. What i did was turn the lights off and then check the windows who they are. I saw how they look. I was thinking that this are the same guys who robbed the other room. The other one was a look out while the one knocing the door wears a black leather jacket and a cap with a knife on the other hand. I didnt answer anymore upon knowing who they are. And then they told me that they will just came back and return for me. After that the next morning I did leave the place. I wish it will not happen to anybody else. Its really traumatic. Im glad that those girls where not raped of molested. Id rather loose thigns than losing my life.

Hi cream~ I had heard this story on the news and was horrified! My boyfriend yells at me constantly for opening the door, most of the time without even asking who it is! I have gotten better at that lately! If I'm not sure even after asking, I will wait until the person leaves, look out the window and if it really was someone that I wanted to see I would go run outside to get them back! But, that is rarely the case! Since I live in a Garden Apartment on the first floor (there's only two) and four doors to each building and am usually the only one home during the day I am pretty careful. This is such a horrible story! If there are children in the home they should be taught to NEVER open the door unless they know the person!

That is awful that I can't bare watch. Now adays we should be vigilant and not to entertain strangers that just keep popping out in front in our door house. We have television set that can inform us and we don't need as someone a salesperson doing house to house service. Right now we must be careful at all times with whom we dealt with.

hi cream 97 that is why if anyone comes to your door you should require identification and if they do not have it lock your door and call the police. that poor family, that was just horrible.but one now days should not let anyone in unless they know who the party is or the person has id to show he or she is legitimate.Census takers must show a badge and cannot enter until they do, as my son worked in the first census taking and they had lessons for days before going out.

That is scarey. You just can't trust anyone anymore. You really can't. I was watching a show on cable for awhile about such stories and how people came of it and why. You really have to be a fighter and even then it doesn't always help much.

I have read this before and it never gets any better. They actually showed an ID badge, huh? Now that is awful. I would ask for one for sure and even then you are in trouble. Ikes! They really want this census thing done and yet we get this sort of thing going on. Makes it hard to trust ANYONE!!

I don't know if you have seen any of the census commercials, but the commercial specifically states open your door to your census worker. All kinds of wackos can also see these commercials, and it makes me nervous for anyone who is easily victimized by people who want to rob them, or hurt them. I personally will not open my door to anyone I do not know. If they need help I will call 911 for them, or hand them the phone through a window, and talk through a window. It is sad we have to think in this manner.
