For many people they have a certain genre of books that they typically like to read. For other it may be more than one. For some like me, it just depends on what catches their interest.

I read from a wide range of different genres, one day it may be a mystery novel, the next a romance, or how about a non-fiction history book.

Do you find that you are an eclectic reader or do you have one particular genre that you like to read.

I certainly am an eclectic reader!!happy

I dip into any genre available - I love the classics, I love a good thriller or chiller, I enjoy some chick lit, fiction, non- fiction, so long as it has a cover and pages I will devour it up!!

Munch,munch I am a real bookworm!!rofl

That is great oldchem. I am glad to read that I am not the only one. Wooo Hoo!

Sometimes I will get on a kick where all I'll read are romance novels for a few days and then I'm tired of them and ready to move on to something else. Or then there are the times that I don't have the time and can only pick up a magazine here or there. That can be interesting as well. I've picked up many great craft tips that way.

Happy Reading!

I love horror novels. I have unfortunately found that I am quite picky when it comes to this genre, and so I have a hard time finding books that catch my interest. I have devoured all Stephen King novels, and he remains my favorite author to date. I find that I am drawn to horror novels in which there is a great deal of character development. Authors I have recently discovered include Dan Simmons and Scott Smith (I just wish he wrote more).

myLot reputation of 98/100. chulce (695)   ranked 249 out of 9,001 in reading  2 years ago

I met Stephen King a long time ago at this book convention, quite an interesting guy. He really made me laugh, he actually said that writing the books the way he did was his way of venting when he got upset with one of his children or when he and his wife would fight.

He said it was his way of clearing his head and being able to be level again. When I asked him about the movies and why he had the cameos, he explained it was a must on each contract for each of the books that was written into a script. It was his way to make sure that the characters were portrayed the way he wanted them too.

Another author is sort of following that trend, the author of the now quite famous Twilight series. If you watch the first movie, she is actually sitting in at the counter eating dinner.

I love a good chick lit book!!

myLot reputation of 98/100. chulce (695)   ranked 249 out of 9,001 in reading  2 years ago

I'll have to admit, there have been a few "chick lit" that I have read. But like I said I am all over the reading realms. I don't stick to just one genre. I find interest in many. It is very amazing all the great stories that you can find out there.

Happy reading!

myLot reputation of 98/100. chulce (695)   ranked 249 out of 9,001 in reading  2 years ago

Wow, that story brings back many memories. Now I have to find that one again. Ooooo maybe since it is summer it is time to dig out some Poe or Dickens. Hmmm.. Gotta love the classics. Where is my lawn chair and a nice tall lemonade. I could use it after this week!

Yes, yes, yes! Well, at least I think so. More often than not I tend to stick to contemporary fiction, but we all need to step out of our comfort zones once in awhile. I also like to read books that my children like, so sometimes you'll find me with a book aimed at 11-15 year olds. When I'm in a crap mood, I'll pick up a fluff book written by a comedian (you know her, she has a love for vodka and a late night talk show). And sometimes, just sometimes - I like to peruse the bookstore and just pick up a book based on it's cover.

myLot reputation of 98/100. chulce (695)   ranked 249 out of 9,001 in reading  2 years ago

You are funny, I like you. :) I would love to sit in a coffee shop with you time and have a few laughs.

The other night I was talking books with my kids and remembered one that we read one summer together, "How to eat fried worms." We laughed so hard. Or another great oldie "Tales of the 4th Grade nothing."

Gosh, I miss those days curled up with the kids reading books until late in the evening on a Saturday night.

Gee, bring on the fluff, I know those moods all to well. Right now, high levels of stress, I think I actually need the Vodka not the book. HA!

Literature is my escapism. I worked at two different bookstores for a combined total of 5 years - the written word is my drug of choice. I recently started reading "Tell All" by Chuck Palahnuik, but I had to put it down because I knew I would be sad when I finished with it knowing it would be another year for his next book. So instead I revisited a old Philp Jose' Farmer book (To Their Scattered Bodies Go).
Are you familiar with goodreads.com? It's another social networking site, but centered around the love of books, Maybe you wanna check it out?

Well, it's extremely late, so maybe I should catch up on my back issues of "Wired" and "Glamour" to wind down...

myLot reputation of 98/100. chulce (695)   ranked 249 out of 9,001 in reading  2 years ago

Thanks for the recommendation. A series of books that I got addicted to are by Author Lilian Jackson Braun. She writes The Cat Who books. If you like cats and mysteries, she has created a good combination. I believe I am several books behind right now, it has been a while since I have read any of her books.

A friend of my recommended The Dragon Riders of Pern. She said that there is a a tale about each character and the dragons that they ride. It is an older series of books, guess I will have to see if I can track them down.

Think this is a good weekend to go on vacation with a good book. In the next week, I have a ton of family coming for my oldest sons graduation. Won't have any time to read when the family is here.

I read and enjoyed some of The Cat Who books too. They are a nice gentle read, but can get a bit samey after you have read a few.

myLot reputation of 98/100. chulce (695)   ranked 249 out of 9,001 in reading  2 years ago

Karen,

I have to agree with you. It makes you wonder how much longer her series is going to last. There aren't that many people in that little town that they can kill off. lol.

Uhh... nope. Not me. I've fallen head over heals in love with High fantasy and there aren't many books outside of that genre that hold my interest very well. It's not that I don't read other book, it's just that I don't usually enjoy the other books I read nearly as much as my high fantasy novels. I like stories that really create a whole new world full of new dangers, and heros! I like getting caught up in a story that's mythical, legendary, and fantastical! I'll read other books, but like I said earlier, I don't enjoy them nearly as much as my high-fantasy novels.

myLot reputation of 98/100. chulce (695)   ranked 249 out of 9,001 in reading  2 years ago

So I guess then friends and family find it on the easy side to make you happy with a gift certificate for fantasy books, aye?

Wish I could stick to one genre, I get bored easily and have to see what else there is out there to read.

myLot reputation of 99/100. allyoftherain (3046)   ranked 2 out of 9,001 in reading  2 years ago

Yup. If only there were a whole bookstore dedicated to fantasy. I'd be stuck there for weeks. The manager would have to start charging me rent.

It's not bad to like other genres. Sometimes I wish I would put more variety into what I read. I go out and get a book that's not fantasy, I read that and find it bland. Then I go back to get another non-fantasy to try again and I see a fantasy book that really catches my interest and I end up bringing that home instead!

Great books. Those are the books that are most worthy of being read. Great books can be found in any genre: literary, science fiction, horror, romance, etc. Even novels of the past can be great, provided that one is willing to work with the context that the stories were written.

myLot reputation of 98/100. chulce (695)   ranked 249 out of 9,001 in reading  2 years ago

I have to admit, I have ran across many books that you don't hear about in the bookstores or from word of mouth simply by reading the dust jacket. It is amazing what you can find if you have the time to just read the dust jacket.

I like the comment from earlier, go by the picture. LOL. I should try that some time and see what kind of luck I have. :)

While I tend to turn more often to sci-fi or fantasy books I am an eclectic reader. I tend to devour anything I can get my hands on and am even known to have dug through fanfic sites online to read their stories. Limiting myself to one and only one genre would mean that I was taking the risk missing so much in the literary world. Stepping outside your comfort level does occasionally have its rewards.

myLot reputation of 98/100. chulce (695)   ranked 249 out of 9,001 in reading  2 years ago

Interesting little tid bit there about the fanfic sites, I'll have to check that out. Not only do I enjoy reading, I also enjoy coming up with my own stories. Hmmm, I wonder if I should write on here in Mylot and see what kind of responses I get. Can you see the smoke coming out of my ears with the story developing?

myLot reputation of 60/100. Rysonia (280)   ranked 3,077 out of 9,001 in reading  2 years ago

*chuckles* I think some fanfic would go over really well over in the movie and television sections. When SGU came out it hadn't shown more then one episode before people were rushing to write fanfic about it. Personally I like to know more about the storyline before messing with it, lol.

Let me know if you actually write any fanfic on here, I'll read it and if you wish give you some feedback.

No, actually, I have written any before, but a long time ago I belonged to a game site called Pogo and I used to write stories about the different games and stuff and let others in the different game rooms read them. It was fun. :)

I like reading a wide variety of genres too, but I do have some favourites. I love autobiographies and biographies, some true crime, history, general fiction, thriller, etc. I love Jane Austen, Jodi Picoult, Diana Gabaldon, Terry Pratchett and Minette Walters.

I have been eager to read the story about Julia Childs. Typically I haven't read biographies or auto biographies. I figure that person needs to have a little privacy. Okay sure they throw it out there because they feel that maybe someone will learn from their mistakes or something.

I love to learn about history and some hidden information about our past, that has always intrigued me.
