What happened to companies hiring full time employees? |
| |
| I work in retail. The company I work for started out hring only full time employees that would be dedicated to the company.(I won't tell you the name but the intials are H.D.)Now they only hire part timers so they can cut their hours when they feel like it or lay them off for no real reason. They can hire them at a low non-livable wage and not offer them benifits. That saves the company, that makes billions of dollars a year, money. Of course, that part time employee has to work at least 2 jobs to be able to squeek by.If they get hurt or sick, the insurance probably won't cover everything. They go deeper into debt, while people that have never worked in a retail store, make millions. Then the idiots that run the company preach customer service. How good do you think the service is going to be from an employee that's just there on a temporary basis because they can't make a living working for the company they're with? | | | | | |

| | I wonder if that will end when the obama health care system goes into effect. They have to supply health care to everyone then.I do know that if i were looking for work i would be grateful just to get part time because full time is hard to get. I dont know why companies do this except to save themselves money. | | | | | | |

| | Companies do not want to hire people full-time, because they are less likely to have to offer benefits and insurance to part-time employees. A lot of the companies here that need people to do simple work that most anyone can do have resorted to getting their people through temporary employment agencies to get the workers they need. They get people sent to their companies, train them to do the work, and then let them work there during their 90-day probation period. After the 90-days has past, they get rid of the people for one reason or another instead of offering them permanent employment. The get the temp agency to send them a new group to replace the ones they are about to get rid of, and the process starts over. It is sad for people that actually want to work, because they go to these companies hoping for work to better their lives, and cheap corporate executives who care more about their bottom line than about the people working or them use them long enough to get what they need from them, then get rid of them. As soon as the are gone, the people running the companies have the new people ready to go to work, and they never really lose a day of production, because the people in charge of training the new people can make sure things run smoothly. | | | | | | |

| | Actually there are lots of private companies now who refused to hire full time employees because they want to cut expenses and production cost. Then if they will hire employees they will make them contractual only. Maybe this is the effect of recession and global economic crisis, hopefully this will be put to an end because lots of lives will be affected especially those having families to take care of. | | | | | | |

| | It's the company's problem. They lack the funds to hire full time employees so they're reporting to part time employees. Eventually, there'll be someone who'll get tired of working like this and when that time comes, it may be the start of the blunting of the company's services. | | | | | | |

| | Allow me to respond to this controversial and sensitive topic on labor-management relations. But first let us clear the air with some facts: business enterprises like retail stores are established for profit - to make money for the entrepreneurs. These companies exist and sustain themselves to exist because of the profit they generate in their daily operations. Profit is only possible if the parameters that generate it exist in harmonious cooperative interplay. And one of these contributing factors to make money, which is as important factor, are the employees, the people that make up the organization. However, certain type of businesses are dependent on market factors, i.e. seasonal sales volume or low and peak seasons. Accordingly, these companies make forecasts on operational "trends" and therefore must adapt to these conditions vis a vis their operational cost and expenses. Thus, on the subject of hiring personnel, they just hire enough regulars based on lean times. There is a law on hiring people. Employees hired for 6 months or more are automatically given a regular status and to enjoy all the benefits afforded regular employees. Thus, companies resort to hiring temporary or seasonal employees to avoid over-staffing with regulars during lean months which would then result in loss/deficit income. | | | | | | |

| | You're right. How can there be good service if the employees are not well taken care of? Employees would serve customers better if the employers would give them a good salary and benefits. If employees are treated fairly, they will feel loyal to the company and therefore work better. I think this kind of employment should be banned. It's not fair for average people who have to work three times as hard just to get by. | | | | | | |

| | i work in a large retail company for almost 6 years now... i started as a part-time employee because i am still a student and can't work much at that time... but i still get all the benefits that the full time employee get but it is pro-rata... that means, it depends on how many hours i am contracted for in a forthnight... so even though i don't get the benefits (annual leave, sick leave, etc) as much as the full-time employee, i still got them... and i am still insured as well as a part-time employee... so when i read your post, i am a bit shocked actually... now i am a full-time employee already and i even got more benefits now... and i don't have to have 2 jobs to survive because my hubby has a full-time job as well... if that is the working conditions that is happening in your company, then i'm not surprised if there will be many unhappy employees and they wouldn't want to be loyal and perform their best as well because they are not appreciated... take care and have a nice day... | | | | | | |

| | ... Hi oneidmnster, You are quite correct about all you have said but I have a slightly different take on the workers. No they may not be as courteous as they should be, working as hard as they are to make ends meet. But I think with the millions of people who are out of work in the United States, folks are happy to have that part time job. So many people are losing their homes and they have to feed and support their children in some cases. The part time jobs are part of what keeps them going and so they work through it all and put on a happy face being thankful I think, that they have a part time job. Just a thought. Take care. | | | | | | |
