No Substitute For Flipping Through A Book.... Or Is It?  email this discussion to a friend?

I personally love flipping through a book while I am tucked in my chair, getting drawn into the tale the author has woven together. Yet, the bound version of a book might be old-fashion and eventually become obsolete with all these technological advances. E-readers are taking over. They can store several books, fit in slender compartments and do other tasks.

I don't have one, but in a year or two that might change. Do you think classic forms of books will be replaced or is there no substitute for curling up with a bound book?

I never really got friendly with the fact that I will have to read a book on my PC. It is actually disgusting in my opinion.

The real fun of reading is when you can get on a couch, curl up with a pillow or cushion by your side with an actual book. I love to read a book in bed before I go to sleep. It is perhaps the only routine in my life that I follow sincerely.

I will die if there were no bound books. They are my dearest friends. I cannot live without them.

E-readers disgust me. Like really, they disgust me. I gag at the sight of them. E-books will definitely not replace good old-fashion paper books for me. I hate reading on a screen. I hate not being able to turn pages. I hate having my books stored as digital files on some hard-drive, instead of overflowing out of my bookshelf. And I hate having to rely on temperamental flaky technology to get some reading done. I will die the day my books can crash and freeze while I'm reading them.
So no. I don't think there's a substitute for flipping through a book.

I still find flipping the pages of the book better. I'm a little bit technical savvy but I'm still a little bit old fashioned or traditional. Sitting down and reading a good book during my spare time is a great way for me to relax, I really love reading after all. Among the books that I really love to read are personal development books, books about technology specifically in the field of electronics, computers, and electronic communications, and books related to finance, money, and business. I believe that electronic books are taking over and why not? They are far more convenient than a number of pages bound together. There might come a time when books will be obsolete and will be replaced by hand held devices that can store files and where one could read as if he/she's reading a book. Books will become some antique materials soon, after all, we're all moving forward to the digital age where everything is seemingly turned digital or electronic. However, whether books will be obsolete or might be faced out in the not so distant future, that won't change me and my love for reading. Whether it's an e-book or a traditional, old fashioned book, I would still definitely read it. I've got a good number of books in my place and should the time come that books are no longer in existence because of the emergence of technology, I'd still keep it. It would be a collector's item.

There will always be a place for books because many people wish to feel a book in their hands and carry it in their bags. Writers and readers abound and there will always be a need for storytellers, hence books will be available for very long into the future.

I am a huge reader, and own a Sony Reader which I love. It has awesome battery life, feels like reading a "real book", and I can bring about 300 books with me, which is a huge plus as I travel a lot. At times it's also more comfortable than holding a book, if the book was particularly thick.
I do find curling up with a real book more enjoyable, and turning the pages myself, easily being able to check how far until the end of the chapter, etc, but for me these are small things and the pros I already mentioned, plus the fact I can normally find any book I want for free (shh don't tell :P) makes it a good choice for me. I still read paper books from time to time though.

I do not think that their is a substitute for it. There are just too many books coming out and that have been out for centuries, being reproduced into different bindings. I just love the feel of a book in my hands while I am curled up reading. An E-Reader will never replace a book in my mind and I Sure hope they don't become obselete because I would miss reading, not sure I would pick up an e-reader to read. Though also we have to think of families to poor to afford an e-reader, and there are plenty of those around....
