During the time it was written it was more directed at the cold war but do you think it still holds any relevance to today's political climate? The story involves two different communities who are basically the same but one likes butter on top of their bread and the other on the bottom. As the war between them escalates they come up with more outrageous weapons till in the end there is a face off with each side waiting to destroy the other side.

Absolutely, it seems that it would still hold relevance in today's climate. I'll admit I haven't read it but from your description it sure seems like it would. I definitely think I would let my kids read it if I had any little ones today. The more young people that learn of the dangers of the desire for mutual destruction the less likely it is to happen one day.
That's how I see today's political climate. It's all about one side "winning" over the other side, which really means DESTROYING the other side even if they destroy themselves in the process. I just heard a short while ago about the huge number of threats made against member of Congress over the stimulus bill. One phone message said, "Vote for it and I'll kill you." That's just one recent example and it's not to say only one side does it. I'm willing to bet that many very young readers of Dr. Seuss are actually more mature and reasonable than some of our politicians in very high positions.

I have the book...and yes I have read it to my kids. I have just about all of Dr. Seuss' books. My kids love them. I have read most of them so many times I can say them by heart.
