Those Awful New Curly Light Bulbs!

Last week, the manager of my complex sent everyone notice that all our light bulbs were going to be switched out for the soon-to-be-mandatory-anyway florescent, curly light bulbs. We'd be "allowed" (!) to keep our old bulbs, but these new ones would "save on energy," & it would be "good for (us). It turned out that the city energy department had talked them into it, refraining from mentioning when they did so that:
* These bulbs wouldn't have the same wattage as what we normally used, & worse,
* They have mercury in them (says so on the bulbs), & that if they broke, would put mercury--a deadly poison--into our environment. They'd need a special clean-up crew to get up the mercury whenever one broke. Oh, but that must be an unusual event, right?
Elic, my BFF & Girling helper (& fellow MyLotter) quickly removed all my bulbs except those in the lamps, & we waited. The workers whirled through soon after, & bestowed their bulbs like diseased seeds upon us.
Now, I've had experience with these ugly bulbs before, & knew a little of what to expect. Even their highest wattage seems darker than incandescent bulbs, but as I turned on the bathroom lights--I felt as if I were in a damned cave! The 3 "vanity" bulbs above the counter didn't add up to 150 watts, if that! Plus the light was an ugly brownish-orange-y color. AND it took too long to actually turn on the light! I'd previously counted the bathroom as the best-lit place I could find to, say, check out any new moles (I've had cancer), or remove a splinter. Now, well, I was almost able to make out the color of my hair!
Also, 1 to 2 seconds is a LONG time to wait for light. Don't think so? See how long that feels the next time a spider crawls across your neck, or you break a glass & you happen to be barefoot. NOW does it sound like a long time?
Yeah, I thought so.
Anyway, I had Elic take out the dumb bulbs & put most of mine back in. I left the ones in the cheesy chandelier in the itty "dining room," as the original "candle light-shaped" bulbs were unlikely to be struck & broken at their height, & because they were also overly hot, which makes my A.C. run. With Obama informing us that once he gets his "cap & tax" program up & running, our electric bills will "necessarily skyrocket," I can ill afford it.
I lodged a formal complaint with the complex, & that's when I found out they'd known nothing about these dangerous, virtually useless bulbs, & they quickly assured me I could put my own good bulbs back in. How generous. I have more than a sneaking suspicion I won't be the sole resident who complains.
"Useless" I say, & do you know why? Because of the Law of Unintended Consequences." Just like Ralph Nader's "green" toilets which supposedly "save energy & water," which one does NOT because to get the thing clean, one may have to flush at least 4 or 5 times (!)--I once met 1 which needed 17 flushes!--one needs to buy extra huge curly bulbs, or buy more lamps to add more lights, thus any "costs or energy saved" is immediately negated!
What really chaps my hide is that the EPA promises to ban the old-style bulbs, & force all of us to use these nifty new, improved little mercury bombs.
What I want to know is, will you join me in standing up on your hind legs & telling the nanny state "NO!"
Well? Will you?

So, here is my experience with the "curly" light bulb. When they first hit the market they sounded like they were the "next best thing to sliced bread" so hubby and I bought a house full of them and changed every bulb. It didn't take long that I noticed that myself and my son, who was 11 at the time,we were keeping a headache. It took a few more months before we realized the culprit was the bulbs. After spending about $100 on bulbs we had to take them all out and put the regular bulb in. But the headache's stopped. These bulbs need some kind of warning on them.

Yes, fluorescent bulbs give off a rapid pulse that does cause some people to get bad headaches.

CICISNANA: So! That's why I used to get headaches around them? I mean siiiiick headaches, where I constantly felt as if I needed to loose my lunch!
Yes, just printing "this bulb contains mercury" is NOT enough; you're right!
GERTY: Thanks for the info! Maybe that'll wind up in a story, someday!

We were buying those bulbs until they said they have mercury in them. We just had to turn in our mercury thermometers because they were dangerous and now they have these bulbs. IT doesn't maek much sense to me. Either mercury is dangerous or it isn't. IF it is, then nothing should be made with them and we should have nothing in our homes with mercury in it.

I believe that some dentists used to. Some people believe that is why we have so many health problems. Some people have had their old fillings removed and refilled with different materials.

WRITERS: Yes, mercury is very dangerous, & once it leeches into your system, your time is short & miserable. If you can stomach viewing what it does, check out the Japanese fishermen whose waters were fouled with mercury. Warning--not pretty!
3HONOR: Yes, some have used it (& I'm shocked to hear some still do!) Such fillings were responsible for nearly making a dear friend go bonkers 'til she read about the mercury, & had all her teeth done over, removing the mercury. She says her memory's not what it once was (phenomenal!), & I think the fillings are to blame. But her wild mood swings & weird personality quirks left.
I hope they're on the right track with your stiff neck & shoulders. It very well could be the poison; it warps the whole body if you get enough (& no, I don't know how much is "enough," sorry).

Well I dont know what size they gave ya but my family complain about them being to bright.
I get the ones that equal too a 100 watt bulb and have used them for years now .
MAtter of fact wehn I started useing them Light company came out 3 times to check my meter they never did figure out why our bill went down!
But they are finding a way to make bill higher on my bill now it says something about chargeing for Green energy!!!!!

LAKOTA: That sounds more like a size I'd want! IF, that is, I were willing to risk the mercury! But I love lots & lots of light; to read or work, I want 200 watts, at least! 100 would never do for me!
As for charging more for "green" things, that's typical of such things. You want "organic" produce? Prepare to pay a third to half again as much as the eeeeevil produce that looks good & lasts longer, & usually tastes the same anyway.
Want your name removed from the phone book? It'll cost you more for them to take it out & give you an unlisted. I avoid the problem by entering under a false MALE name. I give the listing out to those I want to call me, & everyone else can go pound sand the moment I hear, "May I please speak to Mrs. S________?" I can't tell you how many sales & annoyance calls I've avoided! Especially good is not having any heavy breathers wanting to talk dirty to me, since they assume a GUY has the number.
And I pay nothing extra! On my gigglegiggle income, that's always a plus! ;o)

Yeah, these bulbs suck. When I had my home 'winterized' these kind of bulbs were put in. The darn things flicker, which I hate, because I get migraine headaches, because they're triggered by flashing lights. Me and my husband use a small lamp at night with a regular old bulb, lol. The eco hippies are living in fantasy land if they think windmills and solar panels will replace what we use now. Where I live, we have those ugly windmills everywhere. Yeah, there's lot of wind out here, but what people don't know is they break down, a lot, and it costs a lot of money to fix them. The parts have to come from China because they're the only one who have ample material that the parts are made of, magnets. My husband applied for a job with one of the companies out here to work on these windmills, and when I found out the job was non benefitted, plus not to mention dangerous, I said no way. What appalled me is that the company wouldn't even cover you if you fell off one of these stupid things. These windmills also kill birds, and I'm surprised the animal rights people haven't raised heck about it. Yeah, I'll stand with you, Maggie.

Well, I actually kind of like the elegant white windmills, but I also have heard of some of the problems they create. I hadn't heard of the breakdown problem, & I certainly didn't realize the non-benefit job situation! That's really bad. I did know they weren't as effective, & killed birds, though. I wondered the same thing about the animal rights people when I read that. But then, that lot is part of the same mindset that refuses to admit dirt on any cause they support, even when it conflicts with their pet cause, so I suppose it's not that surprising...

I'm not from US so basically I don't know how this bulbs look like but you have given me an idea on how troublesome this bulb can be. Something bothers me though, why would your government or the your city imposed the mandatory used of those new light bulbs when those bulbs have some issues to address that would make the life of people using it uncomfortable

HEX: Austin, Texas, where I am, has few brownouts. It's this "green agenda" that is the culprit. The Left has been pushing it up our noses for decades, even lying to students to get them thinking we're all going to die, & it's FINALLY getting out that it's just pure malarkey. Not only that, but our current oil spill disaster belongs almost entirely to the same agenda, which denied us the right to drill ON the LAND instead of the more dangerous, hard to contain sea! It's insane, as is everything the out-of-control left does.
The USA is very advanced, but far-left policies have gutted our rights through the years, & we're just now truly starting to fight back, & reclaim our rights!

I mainly use Little Lamps at Night in my Living Room and Bedroom but they have the energy saving Bulbs and I certainly do not have the Problems that you are having, good on you for using your own Bulbs again as I would have done this to

I happen to like them, they seem plenty bright to me.I always have turned lots of lights on everywhere, so I suffered from the heat of them. My son buys one type of twisty lightbulb that is natural light or some such and it is even brighter and has a bluer cast. I must just buy higher wattage than your complex is giving you. I buy round globe ones for the bathroom. If they gave you the dinky thirteen watt ones it is no wonder your rooms look dark.

From where do you get the bright ones? I had to order mine!
I totally agree about the heat. It runs up my bill, too!
I don't know what wattage those monster size ones ("vanity lights") were, but they were extremely dim! I'm glad I don't wear make-up; I'd hate to have to use those yellow-brown, dark things. Not only are they too dim to see what you're putting where, the color was so bad no color make-up could possibly be properly applied!
The globes were larger than regular bulbs, but you could see the ends of the curly bulbs inside the globes. There were 3 of them, & the only semi-bright parts at all were the tips pressed up to the globe glass, which was opaque white. Your first impression on seeing them was 3 glowing "esses!" SSS! And one of the esses was almost perpendicular to the others. Gah....

Oh, this is nothing. Just wait until they start dictating how much electricity you're allowed to use.
They'll have guys (working for the government, obviously) assigned to walk past your door and scream "Lights out!"
You know, if people killing themselves to be dictators weren't so greedy and hypocritical, I might--I said MIGHT--believe just a little bit about their "save the planet" nonsense.
But while we're all switching and sacrificing and going from humble to homeless, they're movin' on up past the East Side, with a deluxe Gulfstream in the skyyyyyyyy...
Every single advocate I've seen or heard of preaching this stuff completely ignores it and continues to live however it best suits them. So when I hear that global warming's going to kill us all, or that we NEED to cut back on energy, or that we MUST conserve now for future generations, I have only two words - prove it.
No, not with carefully edited polar bear footage or a completely out of context collapsing ice shelf. Sorry, not with cooked numbers and popular (leftist) actors' and brainwashed flock members' opinions, either. Hmm... nah, try again, please. I can debunk the "critical mass" in 2 minutes right after I wake up hungover in the morning.
Convince me with truth instead of propaganda, and actions instead of orders, and I'm 100% on the wagon.
Until then...
SUCK IT GORE! And Obama. And touchy Americans-are-evil Euros. And anyone else.
Take those poisonous lights and cram 'em.
Although, I will say they last longer for me than regular bulbs. But the ones I got a few years back were REALLY expensive, REALLY dim, and did not drop my electricity bill by even 1%.
So I don't understand their purpose entirely.
To me, these bulbs are more like the first time I said a curse word in front of my father. I was just looking for what I could get away with before I started boozin' it up and cursing like a sailor.

I have to say that when I first heard they were going to make those bulbs mandatory in every ones homes, I was royally ticked off, there is no place at all where you can dispose of these bulbs when they do blow out. On the other hand no dump in the country will take them because they contain Mercury, if one explodes you are suppose to call a hazmat facility to take it away. Since it can't be put in with regular trash. There are no Hazmat facilities in our area that will even think about coming for a light bulb, so that leaves it up to us to dispose of them. Which means I have to drive from NC to FLA. To get rid of a stupid bulb. I don't freaken think so I am not going to spend $300 to $400 in gas to dispose of a light bulb.
They soon enough will start there wonderful little laws so that if you are caught using a regular bulb in your home, you will be fined up to $500 per bulb, if they want to inspect my home for bulbs, then they will be met in the door with a shotgun, its my property and I will do whatever I darn well please to do.
