its an animated film? i mean all they did was their voices!! not like they drew the characters for their roles or anything. we cant see how well they act only can hear their voice.. i mean some movie makers do take into consideration the facial expressions the actors make and include it into the drawings or whatever BUT its still not them! how can it be fair when they arent even seen for them to be beating out people that were in non animated films where you saw all of them??

Best voice-over, maybe, but not best acting. I have to agree with you that it's not fair to put voices in the "acting" category. Funny you wrote this discussion right after I finished watching Monsters, Inc. (for about the 100th time... I LOVE that movie!). Sure, I liked the voices, especially the little girl, "Boo", but I couldn't choose one as being better than any other. For anyone to win a best acting award for just adding their voice to an animation and have them beat out real actors is wrong. They should be in two very distinct categories.

Well, Avatar does have real actors in parts of it but their "real" parts weren't long enough to compete with actors acting throughout entire films, in my opinion, anyway. I honestly think that animated movies or movies like Avatar where the majority is animated should have their own separate category. Maybe, if enough people complain, they'll change that.

I would have disagree with you guys on Avatar. Avatar is not an animated movie. Yes, it does use CGI but real actors are behind the main characters like Sully, Neytiri. Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana actually acted for their characters in the movie. Motion captures where used to capture their facial expressions during acting. To achieve the face capturing, actors wore individually made skull caps fitted with a tiny camera positioned in front of the actors' faces; the information collected about their facial expressions and eyes is then transmitted to computers. So, in my opinion its fair for the Avatar actors to get the awards for their acting, because they actually acted in the movie. They face and body where just digitally changed, but their expressions were kept like that. It's just like putting a costume for the actors. I do not think putting a costume should disqualify these actors from getting their due recognition.

i didn't know they give such award for voice acting. the fact that it is really difficult to interpret dialogues and not merely reading it, people behind those films should be given some credit, perhaps, a different category. :)

I think it would almost be harder to create a charater by voice only....you don't have the actions to put with it.

i dont know.. some people have great voice over talent yet would be a a statue with a blank stare if we saw them as an actual person.. and some great actors cant get the voice overs down.. i guess it really depends on the person and what their strong point is

I can certainly see your point. But, I don't know; acting can certainly encompass much more than what we "see." I should think, also, that for actors/actresses who have done mostly non-animated films to do something animated can be rather difficult. I wouldn't know though because I've never done any acting. I guess they could have a category called 'Best Actor in an Animated Film' but if there is only one animated film that year then that makes them a guaranteed winner; there would be no competition. I don't know, it's just my opinion. I don't watch those movie award shows and don't really care who wins what? I love movies and have some actors/actresses that I like but I don't idolize any of them.

It’s a difficult one because a good actor should be capable of delivering emotion and creating character through the way they deliver their dialogue. But then that’s just a part of acting and as such I don’t think an actor should win a best acting award in an animated movie where they just lent their vocal talents. But then you start to enter a difficult situation when you throw Avatar into the mix because although you don’t see the actors when they are CGI’d to become Navi’s it’s still their mannerisms, movements and so on which are being used to create the body of the character. Personally I don’t really like what they did in Avatar because I want to watch an actor not a CGI version of them and as such I don’t think they should win a best acting award. But I can see a time where this sort of technique will be common place and a separate award for best acting in a CGI enhanced role could possibly come in to play. As for the MTV movie awards, which I saw you mention in another comment and presume triggered this discussion, well they are a complete joke. Yes the public vote for the movies but the demographic who vote in the MTV awards is not representative of the movie going public on the whole, as for the reason why awards are dished out to movies which really are quite awful.

i should have used a different movie than avatar as an example but like toy story and those type have won in the past for the same thing and they def are animated.. yeah mtv movie awards are not accurate because of the target audience compared to some of the other ones but its the only one i can usually watch since they replay it a million times lol.. the other ones unless i tape it arent shown again

yes, it is not fair fair to give some one best acting award when he is acting as an animated because for his character some technical experts are actor if theyu would like to give awards, give the creators....

Yes, this doesn't actually make a whole lot of sense to me! I think the award should be given to those that actually act in front of the camera rather than just allowing their voices to be used! I suppose it is the latest thing though as regards new and different ways of making movies. I love watching movies but I don't generally go for the animated versions as funny as some of them may be! Well it is not fair... that is for sure. But lending their voice in animations is a part of acting. They have to enact the emotions and that comprises of a little bit of acting. But to nominate them for best acting is really not fair. Because the physical expressions play a big role in acting and no one can ignore that aspect.

yeah i mean im not saying the voice over people arent talented because they are to make their voice fit whatever situation it is but still we arent seeing their face and body motions to know if they would be good actors if they were having to do the role themselves

it think it's fair if they win the best acting award as the actor is acting through voice also. it's actually quite hard as the actor must use his voice to show the emotion of the character.

true but what if the actual person is the type that shows no emotion on their faces and doesnt use body language much? they wouldnt win if they had to play it themselves and they just stood still with no emotion on their faces the whole time.. but yeah to make the voice have emotions is hard to do

Its unacceptable! How can they give awards for best acting for a character in an animated movie? Its ridiculous!! They just gave voice to the character, that's all. They can be given the award for the best dubbing, that's all. If they really want to give the award, they can give it to the animators who made the character and did the animation. They are the ones who deserve it the most. They did their work so well that the character's acting was better than a real person.

thats a good idea.. give the award to the people that MADE the character come to life not the voice of it!

Yeah well I think it's okay to include them but like... they should give like minus points when there entering that category. I don't know how the thing is judged but it doesn't seem like fair judging to me.

i think some of them are just rigged anyways!! some movies win in every category and its like how is that possible when some categories dont even fit well or the people in that category for the movie were horrible!!
