Pet Euthanasia.....Can you do it? |
| |
| I was just out walking my friends toy poodle who is 16 years old, almost blind, losing his balance, and stumbling. He is my friend's first and only pet she has ever had and being single treats him like a child. I have often said that she should be thinking of putting him to sleep before he starts to suffer. I thought I could do it but for some reason just now walking him I began to have doubts. He's not mine but I have grown very fond of him and I have decided that I will not bring up the subject again. The idea actually brought tears to my eyes. | | Toy Poodle | | | | |

| | I so agree that your animal will let you know. I had to make this tough decision only once. It takes strength. | | | |

| | I've had to put pets to sleep. What helped me was knowing that the other alternative would be for them to suffer - and I loved them enough to want to spare them that. The hardest part of love is having to let go ... | | | | | | |

| | It is a very sad subject. And one I feel very torn about. It is hard to let them go, but when quality of life starts to fail they may be better off. Last summer my cat got really sick. He was the first pet that my boyfriend and I got together and at the time we were seperated. When I took him to the vet they told me he was slowly starving to death and would not survive surgery and that the humane thing to do would be to put him to sleep. I called my boyfriend and asked him to come up. He stayed while they put Malaki to sleep and I sat in the car crying. | | | | | | |

| | Well, I had to make that decision this in September this year. My cute little canine friend was diagonised with a terminal illness, of which I don't even want to talk about. I saw my friend, who was once active loose all her interests and the appetite too. She was barely 4 years when god thought it was right to separate her from us. It was my first pet ever ( I'd been whining for a pet ever since I was a child and when I had my wishes granted, Alas! ). I haven't even thought of another pet because I never want to find myself in a similar situation. I don't think I'll never come to terms with my decision of putting my dog to sleep, but that I feel was the best for her. | | | |

| | Thanks sanke...I can only imagine what it is to go thru the ordeal...but I'm sure that I will find out soon. Kyko hasn't lost his apetite yet so I'm sure he will still be with us for awhile. But it is so sad to see him without energy and bumping into things. He's not blind yet but it probably won't be too long now befor he is. Thanks for dropping by and your input. PS: If you are looking for Best Responses may I recommend that you always go up and post your comment in the discussion posting box above. Thanks just a thought.) | | | |

| | It would be a very difficult and sad decision. I once had a pet maltese for 15years. In the end, it became absolutely necessary, if not, totally depressing to euthanasize him. He had totally lost his appetite, was losing all his hair and could not even stand, without stumbling. I guess it must be dreadful not to have any energy whatsoever. I brought him to the vet and the vet recommended euthanasia. My family stayed with him thoughout the process. It was so sad and we mourn his passing for, I think, a long time. Just responding to this discussion still bring tears to my eyes. So, euthanasize your pet only if absolutely necessary. | | | | | | |

| | It is a difficult decision. I only believe in it if the animal is suffering, or just about too when they are very old. I did it many times over the years. It is very hard. I felt like God, and I hated it. My last one I had put to sleep in my lap at home. I held him and loved him. It still hurts, and I still cry, it's 14 years later. | | | | | | |

| | Yes. It's absolutely heartbreaking, but I did have a dog put to sleep. He was 16 years old, couldn't walk at all, was blind and deaf. All he did was lay and shake. We couldn't get him to eat. I wanted him to go to sleep, not starve to death. Humans can tell us what's wrong, animals can't. When it's obvious that they're suffering, it really can feel like the right decision, no matter how much it hurts. | | | | | | |
