Are Blu-Ray Discs Better Than DVDs?

We don't have an HD Ready TV but we do have loads of DVDs and old-fashioned videotapes that hubby has collected over the years. I realise that the sound on our telly isn't the best but I've played DVDs at Mum's house on her HD Ready TV and I can honestly say that the sound on that isn't much better, even after tweaking the sound on the telly. This begs the question; are Blu-Ray discs more suited for HD Ready televisions because I have heard that the picture AND sound are far better than conventional DVD. Does it matter how much one spends on a DVD or Blu-Ray machine? This does remind me of the format wars between Betamax and VHS many years ago and we all know who won that one. I was just wondering if Blu-Ray lives up to the hype?

Hi Janey.. Well, I have to admit that I am hard pressed to know the difference. A friend of mine has a Blu-Ray player and it doesn't look any different to our HD broadcast television and my standard DVDs are not HD anyway, are very difficult for me to tell the difference. They are all good quality and the infintessimal amount of clarity that may come through with Blu-Ray is something that I find very hard to detect. So I won't be getting a Blu-Ray any time soon. _Derek

Come to think of it, not he doesn't have an HD TV. It's one of those monster large screen things that were out just before HD.. I have seen Blue Ray playing in stored on big screens, the salesmen pointed out, but I still found it hard to see a huge difference. Perhaps it's just me, but I do find that once viewing such clear picture, I get acclimatised to them, and still can't really tell the difference from standard broadcasting TV stations but then if I put on an old video... I still have a video recorder attached via one of the scart sockets, as I have quite a few films on video. I am slowly getting DVDs of the old films I bought usually from Ebay or play.com. _Derek

I think Blu Ray is good for new players..it's still famous until now so maybe it is the best to use. We had blu ray discs but they wouldn't play in our ld player so we bought a new player and all discs played fine.
