By "Sports Stadium" I mean the local soccer/American football stadium, baseball stadium...anything really, so long as it is in your hometown and it doesn't take long to get there, either by car, public transport or, as in our case, within walking distance, although Blackpool FCs ground on Bloomfield Road is in Town so we have to take the bus; journey time about 15 minutes, if that.
John once admitted to me that the main reason he bought this house was that he was within stagger...er, walking distance from Carlisle United's football ground. Sad but true!
Mum's is Blackpool's football ground, of course and I have been lucky enough to visit both this year. Plus Wembley to see Carlisle..but there's nothing like going to see your local team play in their own ground.
http://www.blackpoolfcimages.co.uk/ This webcam shows the latest development of the East Stand ready for the Premiership season. The South Stand has already been completed so the East Stand would finish "the look" if you like. Rumour has it that it won't be a "proper" stand as yet because there won't be enough time to complete it..more like a huge temporary stand that is bigger than the one there at present.
http://www.carlisleunited.co.uk/page/TheStadium/0,,10361,00.html I sit in C stand with hubby, which is the "traditional" part of the ground. It is old but the seats are wonderful, wooden ones. The modern stand is where all the plastic, blue seats are situated. Beneath our stand is the Paddock, where people can stand. That's where the atmosphere is generated from..often frustration but that's Carlisle United for you!

I guess that would be Raley field. Never been there. In Los Angeles, it was Dodger stadium and then Staples Center...

It's Sacramento's minor league baseball team, The River Cats.

The nearest sports stadium of a national level to me is called Carrara Stadium and it is not in my town, but still only a five or ten minute drive away from my house. It is currently not being used as it is being rebuilt to house the local Australian Rules Football team as it joins the national competition next year. They are playing in the reserves and under 18 competitions at the moment using another sporting ground as a home.
Next year once the new grandstands are built, it will be hosting national senior teams which will be awesome for me as I have not seen my team play live for many years. They are based in Melbourne, 1800 kilometres away! My team use the MCG as their home ground. If you have ever watched the Boxing day Cricket Test between England and Australia, you would have seen that ground. It is massive. Our little stadium will be tiny compared to that!
You can check out Carrara Stadium here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrara_Stadium

It is a lot different than most codes of football as it was designed to be played on cricket ovals so it is a huge playing area and can move quite fast over a big distance.
Yeah, the ground has been used for lots of different things over the years but not consistently and was a bit sad. They thought about tearing it down completely a few years back. It was originally built to house the Brisbane team when they entered the national competition in 1987 even though Brisbane is an hours drive north from here.
Brisbane then relocated to the Gabba ground in Brisbane which is where they rightly should be. Now the Gold Coast ground will finally be used for its proper purpose and will be successful I feel.

Your story reminds me of what is happening with Blackpool's ground. For years nothing really happened with the South and East Stands but, due to a Latvian owner the money has been there, which is fortunate because they will be in the Premier League next season. We don't want an embarrassment of a ground lol.
Thanks for the links. Aussie Rules, eh? Hubby knows the rules of that game but I..er, don't. It just looks such a mad game to play..great fun though I should imagine.

are you talking like a college stadium too? If so, the University of Texas's football stadium is down the highway about 10/15 minutes, not during rush hour and the UT baseball field is too
there is a high school football field just a bit across the highway (290) from where Maggiepie lives
but the nearest pro field is the Round Rock Express "Dell Diamond" in Round Rock just 20 minutes up the freeway in the other direction
I never go to sports events so I'm no expert as to where other little fields are, besides elementary schools and the like

Well my discussion can include any stadium nearby and I know that there is a tradition of unviversity linked with sport in your country..quite right too.

The nearest to us now is the International Stadium and http://www.cardiff.gov.uk/content.asp?nav=2868%2C2967%2C3001%2C4662%2C4664&parent_directory_id=2865 the next one after that is Cardiff Millenium Stadium which is, http://www.millenniumstadium.com/
When we lived in Cardiff up to a year ago, we could walk to the Millenium stadium within about 5 minutes, but had to drvie to the Internal Stadium within 10 minutes. Not being a strong fan of sports though, I have never been inside either of them. But on international match days, there is definitely an atmosphere of excitement in the city. But since we have moved about 20 miles away into a small village I rarely visit the city on match days..

I never knew about your International Stadium so thanks for that. Thanks also for the Millennium Stadium link. I've been there twice, once to see Blackpool and the other time to see Carlisle. I absolutely love the place, in fact I prefer it to the "new" Wembley. Perhaps it's the roof I like? I don't know but I love the noise the place generates. I also like the fact it's by the river. Very nice indeed.
In fact, I love Cardiff itself.
My Uncle (who divorced from my Aunty in Blackpool) lives there with his new wife and lots of foster kids. If you ever see a very tall bloke with greying, curly hair that'll be him lol.

I would love to go to a baseball game...I get the impression they can go on for quite some time but is that only if they are on the television?

My son will probably go to the odd match, he's actually an Arsenal fan(don't ask I don't know why!!) but has a season ticket at Blackburn so he gets to see all the top teams, but he just loves watching football and has been to the odd match at Christie Park so he'll be interested to see the new ground - it's coming on well and looks very good.
#I'm more interested in the new Sainsbury's that's going where Christie Park was!!

I think there will be a few like that at Blackpool...they won't be supporting 'Pool but the likes of Man U that will be visiting.
We have a long-running saga going on with Sainsbury's...or should I say, the OPPONENTS of Sainsbury's. Carlisle is one of those places where nothing gets done. One guy objected to the expansion of our airport (even though it wasn't for passengers, God forbid) and that's got shelved so Eddie Stobart will have to move and if the workers don't want to move, well, tough. It's the same with Sainsbury's. The public want it but the powers that be at the Council keep telling them to "change the shape of the store so it blends in" even though there is a monstrosity of a blue building housing students directly opposite.
This place is a joke at times. At least there's been some road-surfacing going on which was sorely needed, but I bet that was due to people putting in claims for damaged cars, otherwise they wouldn't have bothered.

My home town has professional basketball, the San Antonio Spurs. It is about 30min from my house, depending on traffic. We also have several University's, each of which has their own teams and stadiums. Whoops, good thing I looked this subject up. We also have the Silver Stars, (WNBA), the Rampage (ice hockey) and baseball, San Antonio Missions. It is a farm club for one the pro teams.
The baseball field is 10min from my house. Ice Hockey is the farthest at approx 45min. Silver Stars play at AT&T center, the same place the San Antonio Spurs play.
Prosperous mylotting

I have a relative who emigrated to the US around 1920 (based in the Boston area) and he practically lived on a University Campus because he used to look after the grounds once he got too old to coach. I can't remember the name of the place off-hand but I will probably start a discussion about it eventually. My relative used to coach soccer at the Campus which is understandable because his Dad had played for Burnley FC in England.
