A bit of living off the land!

After weeks of dreadful weather we are enjoying a really lovely weekend.
Yesterday on his break from his 'pot washing' Saturday job at the village pub my son discovered several fruit trees on a walk around the back of the village - he came home with a huge bag of plums.
Today he and his friend are going to try out the new two man kayak that he has bought himself with his 'wages'as they have heard of another area with damsons, blackberries and apples growing wild so they are going collecting.
It looks like I'm in for a few days of jam making , stewing and baking!!
Are you lucky enough to be able to 'live off the land ' a little like this?

Much more fun to think of unopened cats. My cats are always open, open to food, open to treats. . . you get the idea. Thanks for the wonderful belly laugh.

Hiya chem,
If we liven near enough to a Village we would be able to do this as the Houses that were built before resolved the problems of being able to keep fruit and vegetables for much longer without the use of a Fridge.
The walls of the older Houses were made from better quality stone and therefore were much cooler in Summer and warmer in the Winter.
Not all of the Houses are built like that now of course so it would be a question of finding a much older and much less modern House which I would have no qualms about the more old fashioned the better for me as I would be able to apply my favourite methhod to combat this debilitating humid heat we are having again yet again for some it would be joyous to have this kind of weather but when it goes on for days or weeks it gets to be downright monotonous. I am longing for a cool Day or afternoon the humidity is extremely high and therefore the heat seems much worse making keeping fruit or anything fresh an impossibility without a Fridge of course.
I have a bit of fever today so it makes this kind of weather seem harder to put up with (grin).
Living in Flats does not make for natural living so People tend to forget the Villages and reach for the nearest thing they have it´s only normal as most Villages here are miles away from us.
Happy Jam making though I wish I could go and help you out I love doing that.

Hiya oldchem,
Usually I have quite a few Jars around but I end up putting them in the proper Bin. It´s a shame that I can´t give them to anyone as no one wants them.
Very far and few between Women that make their own Jam.
So the Jars go in the Bin I´m afraid. Sometimes I keep the odd one for Salt and others for spare Olive Oil but that´s it.
You will have a lot of helpers to keep you busy so you have got your work cut out this week have´nt you. Good luck wish I could try that Jam yummy.

I have things growing at home that I need to stew up, freeze, or preserve in some way. What is the difference between a damson and a plum? I thought they were the same thing.

We have a neighbor that has 2 apple trees. He always tells my kids to pick all that they want. I have made applesauce and some pies with those apples. My husband also loves to go berry picking. There are a few "wild" blackberry bushes in the area. We just eat those. I never learned the fine art of canning or making jam, my grandmother passed away before she could teach me.

That's great. I've only lived a few days like that. Well, not exactly like that. My family went to a trip on a province here in the Philippines. It was a very cold place. We went horse back riding, side tripping on various locations of the place and others. It was a good experience all in all. :)

Very little. On my way hoem from work, and a certain amount of my partner's trip, there are blackberruy bushes. Last year we oicked quite a few. This year the council decided to trim them right back, so there was virtually no fruit!

What a shame!
There are certainly a lot less wild onea about than there where when I was a child.
I have strong memories of me and my parents walking on a Sunday afternoon with big tins and filling them from the brambles.
I'mlucky to live in a rural area so there are still plenty around here - a walk down the canal can produce a good bowlful!

that should be CANS, not cats...
