Jinxed myself. Ever say you're going to cook for someone and it doesn't work out

If I just cook, it usually works out. If I say, "I'm going to cook for so and so or such and such, it doesn't work out."
Said I was going to make a pie for my brother-n-law today. So the bottom was raw, the top was burning and the middle still wasn't cooked. So I took the top off, put the pie back on the bottom rack and cooked it longer. Then I don't know if the bottom cooked or not, but the middle was like apple sauce instead of pie.
So I sent it without a top crust.
Then I said I was going to make extra apple cookies to freeze for different events. Had a terrible time getting them to work out, too.
Ever have problems cooking for others or events? Ever have difficulty making food work out when you cook it?

I think it has to do with attitude. Positive attitude. You might be a little blue. Or it might be the oven. Have you had other problems with it? I don't bake that much. I did come across a great banana bread recipe, tried it and it turned out perfect. And I have bad days too. I worry too much about it. Bet the next batch turns out fine.

I'm not a pie maker. I'm trying to be one because my husband loves pies and we have had blackberries and apples coming out of our ears this year. I actually hate pie crust.
Thanks for responding and take care.

True, but cakes use a handful of berries or a small amount of apples. I had a ton of each.

I think I have made one pie in my entire life. I DO like pie crust. I'd be glad to take the blackberries off your hands. LOL You could make cakes and stuff too. Just an idea.

i'm pretty good at staying out of cooking disasters, but just coz i don't own my own home yet (never hosted a big event yet), and during potlucks i'd usually just offer making the salad, heehee. i don't make pies or bake at all. i can just imagine the mess i'll make if i attempt at that, lol.. i love to cook though, and someday i want to be able to serve my loved one. for the meantime i'll practice ^_^

Yes, salad is usually a safe bet. I consider myself just practicing when it comes to pies and bread. The rest, I can make fairly consistantly. Thanks for responding and take care.

I had a really bad time cooking a coconut pie last time I tried... but as I usually tell people "I DON'T COOK, ANYTHING" I get more pleasantly surprised reactions than not, lol. you should try that!

Oh they know better. I cook at the time.
Coconut pie is really hard compaired to other pies. All those custard type, my Mom could never get to work. Banana, lemon, custard, all those. But she did a bang up job at fruit, berries, pumpkin, stuff that grows outdoors. My berry pie was soupy, but now I add lots of corn starch or tapioca to the bottom to soak it up. Or pre-make the middle and put knox gelatin. Where there is a will, there is a way!

Sometimes or even when I go to make something special just for the family, I sometimes mess up. This is due in part to being distracted or overly confident in preparing a dish and I forget an ingredient or cook it too long or too high of temperature. Not saying that is what happened to you, just what happens to me..lol

I was trying to bake a pie, feed the cats, and wash clothes in a 26 year old machine that I have to watch all at the same time.

I'm sorry to hear all that. That is a lot of money. I'm sorry to hear that. Luckily, I'm just out the work and ingredients for a pie, actually just the top pie crust was a loss. But if I had ruined it all, our apples were off our tree. Just flour, sugar, egg, cinnamon, sugar.
That must have been very upsetting for both of you.
I guess I will stick with small surprizes. Microwaves take a while to get the hang of. My school's first microwave in the Home Ec room caused a full school evacuation. The teacher didn't realize the outside doesn't brown, so she kept adding time to these puff pastery swans. They ended up charcoal in the middle with smoke everywhere and they were still white on the outside. She hadn't been trained on a microwave and didn't own one. She was just trying to teach a new way of cooking. Needless to say, she did a lot of reading and practicing before we ever got a chance to use it and school was not in session when she practiced. Thanks and take care.

Yes, I've had it happen, more times than I care to count. I think I would have ran to the store and bought a pie from the bakery, ha! Let's hope the dessert you sent tasted good, so who cares what it looked like.

Oh I tried a piece first. It tasted like apple sauce with a bottom crust. My husband said it tasted alright.

I have had a week or two of things not going just right. I am pleased to say that what I planned to cook came out just right today, but it was just for the three of us here. I am sorry that stuff went wrong. Is your stove maybe not heating evenly? I know my first hubby's grandmother had an awful time once, and it turned out to be weather related.

You're not supposed to bake when it's raining, but the rest of the time, it's been in the 80s or 90s, so when else can I bake? Besides, cookies and other things work for me almost no matter what (baring reading the amounts in ingredients wront).
