My sister gave me a Jar of Vegemite and I cant use it as a spread for my sandwiches. I know this is very healthy, its good for me and Australians loves it. Aside from a bread spread what are the other things Australians do to Vegemite, is there a way to make it palatable? Its too salty and the taste reminds me a bit of rust. I dont want to throw it away, I just want to know how can i make a Vegemite easier to eat? anyone here who had tasted vegemite? click the picture below to enlarge picture of Vegemite.

Visiting My Brother and his family in London at the beginning of last Year,I decided to get off the fence on whether or not to try Vegemite's English Cousin,Marmite, which I had managed to avoid trying up to that point in my life when I saw they had it in the cupboard,(I spread a little of it thinly on some warm buttered toast) and to my surprise I didn't regret the experience..I then bought a jar for myself on my return home and slowly ate my way through it over the next couple of months..Then,hoping to repeat the experience with a strine flavour,I then bought a Jar of Vegemite...and despite trying,to this day it remains in the cupboard while I work through my second,(larger !)Marmite Jar! Marmite is more syrupy, whereas vegemite resembles something like chocolate spread,IMO..I think you could possibly make a stock or a hot drink from Marmite as an alternative to eating it,but I'm not sure if the same holds true for Vegemite..One bit of advice I could offer with my experience of both products-if the flavour is too salty for your taste, try to use a lot less on the sandwich (Or toast-recommended!)-they are prime examples of the saying,"Less is More..." good luck experimenting further!

On my first time trying it I have a spoonful of it that I spread in the toast because I thought it was good but I was being teary eyed as I take a bite tot he sandwich. I will give it a try again and see if less is more and there is a way to make it less salty. The first time I saw it I thought its sweet because as you said it looks like chocolate spread and I love hazelnut butter with chocolate flavor.

These yeast based products wouldn't be as salty as anchovies, but there's no way I'd be having an anchovy sandwich in the next..ever...! thinly spread is definitely the way to go with this stuff.Just use it to enhance the flavour of something-it works with cheese and cheese spreads too..

i tried to apply only a thin layer and It was easier to eat but for some reason it leaves an after taste that is kinda uncomfortable. I'm giving my best to let it grow on me. I keep on thinking it is healthy while eating it.

Right-oh! Just dropped in here to add a bit of Strine to the mix! Good onya for not ditching the stuff just yet. I used to have it when I was younger - y' could say I grew up on it & I turned out sorta orright! The first mistake most make is to treat it like peanut butter & spread it way too thick - it'll burn the roof of y' mouth off if you do that (y' drongo!). Very, very thin on toast - not bread - (better on a crumpet), with margarine or oil, once a day. Low fat. Doctor's orders! Here are a few other uses you can consider: Hangover Cure - it's chocka's full o' B vitamins & cheaper than Berocca. Hair Gel - works well on dark haired blokes & sheila's. Gravies, stock & dressings - gives it a real flavour hit. Morning Sickness Cure - loaded with folic acid & good for the kid (start 'em early) & for the sheila with all those exotic cravings! Put it in your survival kit - the stuff has a huge shelf life. Soy Sauce Substitute - just don't mix it with Wasabi; it'll blow your head clean off! Zit Cure - add a dot of this & it'll zap it away real fast. Fair Dinkum. Chocolate Substitute - appearances only (used to trick my sister once!). Meat Substitute - especially in melted chreese sangers with walnuts! There's stacks more!

You haven't heard of Chreese? It's one of the better tasting soy cheeses that came onto the market a few years ago. The Cruelty Free Shop in Sydney sell it online. Myself, I'd use gluten-free bread or rice cakes, but I can remember eating it when I was younger.

I grew up with Vegemite and have always loved the stuff. It is delicious on toast or sandwiches, but you need to spread it very thinly. If you put it on too thick, the flavour becomes too intense. When I was living in America, one of our favourite past times was to get Americans trying Vegemite. One guy I lived with briefly tried it on toast when we made it for him the way that we like it. He said that he liked it, but he was drunk at the time. Anyway a few months later, when he was living back at his home town and I called in to visit him, he wanted to try it again and we left him and his step son to make some toast with Vegemite assuming that he would spread it thin like we initially showed him. But no, he pasted the stuff on really thick like peanut butter and hated it. He could not believe that he liked it before as he thought it tasted like a soy sauce paste. His step son was the funniest. He rushed over to the sink and started washing his mouth out with water!
