Rant Alert: Another Round of SSI Benefits Fun In The Making: NOT

As many of my friends know, I've had my share of "fun" with SSA due to my getting SSI disability benefits which I've been getting since 1996. To give a thumbnail sketch, back in May of 2007 my benefits were completely cut off and I had only $5.71 to my name as I was expecting my next benefit check. I then only had gotten and received a notification letter of their intent to cut my benefits off on Saturday, April 28, 2007...gee they gave me a lot of notice, didn't they? It stemmed back to my having gotten "extra" money from a Now Account of my mother's that I was entitled to after she died. IT WAS ON RECORD my mother had died, and even though the total amount was more than the allowable monetary assets one can have while on benefits...still, what did they think I was going to do with the money? Take a Bahama cruise..NO...I used that money to pay off her funeral costs and other bills--when all was said and done I didn't have money leftover--it all went for those expenses.
Then just last year at this time once again I was going through hell since once again I was being questioned about my eligibility for benefits--actually it started in November of 2009 when I got the letter. I began calling the local office on a regular basis, but all I succeeded in doing was leaving messages on the caseworkers machine...she never ONCE got back to me. I also mailed in proof of my eligiblity via Priority Mail/Certified/Return receipt request--still nothing--this kept going on with my calling them..nothing. Then in February of last year (2010) I received a duplicate letter to please contact them as soon as possible...WHAT? What happened with my messages, the material I sent in? Then in March got a letter saying since they hadn't heard from me, my benefits were to be discontinued....WHAT?????
With both cases, I had the inspiration to contact a representative of my Congressman's office to help me out, and fortunately there is a special representative that must have a lot of clout as she handles SSA benefits issues and things move fast and she gets the ball rolling. Well folks, looks like I'm going to have to contact her again. I didn't go out yesterday, not even to get the mail, but since I did go out today got my mail...sure enough a letter from SSA needing to review my case as to whether I'm still eligible...are these people freaking nuts? My status hasn't changed to whether I need benefits or not and have been getting them since 1996..I'm NOT eating fillet Mignon and sipping champagne every night, have a jaguar car (don't even drive) go on cruises...heck, by the time I pay my bills there's not much left just for essentials--I haven't even had extra money to buy a badly needed pair of shoes for crying out loud and I was ever so grateful, more than they know, when my cat Pyewacket died last year, many of my on-line friends chipped in and sent me money so I could cremate him. oh yeah, living in a lap of luxury--NOT
Anyway, I feel like screaming to SSA to leave me alone already. YES I'm aware that there are a lot of cheaters who get benefits that don't deserve them...I'm NOT one of them, my benefits are my only source of income..why don't they go after the cheaters...they don't seem to, yet love bothering the hell out of people like me who need them.
To have a head start I just emailed the one woman at my Congressman's office to find out if that representative still is there, so she should see my email first thing tomorrow morning--I want to get cracking on this as soon as possible before I get another letter by SSA that my benefits are ended. Calling my local SSA office doesn't do diddle squat since all I was doing was leaving messages, and neither does mailing in things since in the past both were ignored, and no I'm not able to travel to the office either.
Okay your turn...would love to hear your rants about the Social Security Administration and if you've been hassled by them in having and keeping your benefits. And why is it we who DO need benefits and are honest get harassed like this? Seems we have to fight for everything.

Not really a rant, but as I understand it (from a friend who gets SSA benefits), they are reviewing each account every year. You will have to prove that you need the benefits every year. Fun, huh? And just what they need... something to keep them busy.

Like I said I've been getting benefits since 1996 so don't know why they suddenly changed it to review us SSA benefits folks every year...I guess they LOVE paperwork to shuffle around to make them look busy

rant away! sure sounds like they are putting you through a lot of you know what for nothing!
I don't have any dealings with social security. My ex was on SSI. He had brain surgery and they immediately took him off it saying he was fixed and could get a job. He did go get a job, which didn't last long because the brain surgery did not stop the seizures. We were divorced by then, but seems he got right back on without much of a fight.
I wish you the best of luck with it!!

Hi Pye, don't you feel targeted? It seems to me that you are. Why else are they constantly after you to cut off your benefits? I think I'd let the congressman/woman know about this and see if they can get SSA off of your back once and for all because this just isn't right. Damn these people anyway! ARG!!

I have no idea why they keep harassing me about this...it's only been these past few years they've been doing this, kind of strange since I've been getting benefits since 1996

I am almost sad to say that I have had not run ins with the SS. I had SSD and I was told by a very informative SS lady one day on the phone that she looked at my elegibility and saw that I was an S which means Severe and that I would not have to have the occasional elegibility trauma. And I never have had a problem. This is since 2006-7. I am honest and I am not being harassed at all.
I recall responding to your discussion back afew months about calling the Congressman's office and trying to get ahold of someone. I think you should write a letter to the head department(gives info on your paperwork you get from them) and call a meeting. Have all your paperwork there and ask that you get information then and there. You are elegible, why so much trouble getting information and talking to someone, etc. Get to the bottom of it then and there.
I hope you do have the opportunity to get to the bottom of this.

None of that works. Last time I went through a major ordeal with them they had sent me a letter in Nov of 2009 wanting the same thing..to see if I was still eligible...I keep calling, calling and only succeeded to leave messages..NO ONE ANSWERS their bloody phone, not even to make an appt..Sheesh---I did send letters and all certified and return request receipt--they got them since I would get the return receipt back but I suspect the letters just sit on someone's desk collecting dust--this went on until February..all those months I kept calling almost everyday--it wasn't until I got hold of the Congressman's representative that things finally were settled...

The last time I went through this crap last year I did call the 800#--that didn't do any good either--but yes I did email the one woman of the Congressman's office, so the other woman that represents the Congressman also and deals with SSA issues did get back to me...so I emailed her and scanned the SSA letter to me and sent that also as a PDF attachment...now the wait

I would push the congressman's rep to help you get this straightened out. If not go over their head until something happens. I can't believe that our situations are so different. I call the 800# and get someone and they just take care of whatever problem I have. I don't understand this at all. It is almost like they just snub their noses at you and ignore you. I would go up the ladder until something happens.

Hey pye~ Sorry you're going through this crap again! You know I
understand completely! What I don't understand is that some people
don't get bothered at all and people like you and me do! I know
people that are on SSI and SSD that they don't even bother for
years! I had to re-apply also this year. And I am still dealing
with the BS! I don't even know what to tell you. I have a decent
Medicaid Caseworker and a really great Foodstamp Caseworker so
I am able to speak with them, although there isn't much they can
really do. But, I still have the Medicaid Spenddown which is
totally unfair and still can't seem to get through to anyone that
I can't live, pay my bills and that too. So what happens is I
have to skip a month (February) to "catch up" on my bills, short
myself of meds, pray I don't need medical care until March when
I can pay the next Spenddown! Living in NYS sucks and is has
the most unfair and moronic system of any state anywhere! Do
you want to go to Albany and give them a piece? I'm ready!!!

Yes I remember the "horror" stories you've had, and you're right. I've been getting my benefits since 1996, so why all of a sudden they want to re-interview me...AGAIN...I only went through this crap last year at this time.

The joys of being on Disability... Not. Totally have been there, done that an NO Fun. Have never understood why when a person is following it by the book they are the ones harassed and sometimes taken off the Benefits when there are others you know who are cheating the system, and never get caught or questioned. It does make you wonder for sure. The reason I am not receiving any benefits and have not for about 5-6 yrs. now is due to being Married #1, and then they gave me a choice either work full time with no benefits or not work... They never stopped to think I am Married and need the extra Income for things.
Plus this was before the Prescription help from Medicare. So for now my Health is deteriating again and my leg with the chronic wound has gotten worse again and it is back to the Doctor I go. I would have to actually probably start from the beginning again if I need disability so I am not sure where to turn to either. Wishing that somehow they could only offer benefits to those who have proof from doctors they need it, and quit helping those abusing the system for sure.

Oh, dear... not this again.
It must feel like you're caught in some time warp thing and keep reliving the same dam thing a la Ground Hog Day...
Here's hoping you get it all straightened out once and for all, and soon.
