I found myself quite intrigued when I read that SAD can affect Bipolar Disorder. About 20 percent of bipolar patients experience a mood shift based on seasonal sunlight. I had never known that bipolar could have component of SAD, but it actually makes a lot of sense. http://www.everydayhealth.com/depression/seasonal-depression-and-bipolar.aspx I myself am Bipolar and I actually am wondering if I may be part of the 20 percent. I have noticed that I tend to be more depressed during the winter months, but I am not sure if it really is due to SAD. I have never really been successful in tracking my mood. I always start a chart, (you can download them online) but I always end up not keeping on it. The article also talks about some possible treatment options. I have heard of light therapy, but I found it interesting that that could actually trigger a manic response in someone with bipolar. But again, it makes a lot of sense. (At least to those who understand a bit about how bipolar works.) The last treatment option they mentioned, however, was one that I had never heard of- melatonin. Melatonin is "a naturally occurring chemical transmitter that helps regulate circadian rhythms." It has been shown to help people with jetlag and insomnia. As someone who also has a problem with insomnia, I found this to be a little insightful. A common factor in these problems means that they may have the same cause, so I'm definitely going to look into this and see if I can't benefit from this info. I'm not trying to make any kind of point with this discussion. I just think that it is important that people know more about bipolar and other psychiatric disorders, to help remove the stigma and so that people can get the help they need. I'd like to thank those of you who read my entire discussion and took the time to visit the link. I always worry with starting a long discussion. lol. Have a great day!

Interesting. I was aware of SAD, but wasn't aware it can affect Bipolar Disorder also, although it makes sense. After I got anxiety disorder, I am more depressed during winter months also.

Anxiety can be a crippling thing, I know. Well good thing we don't have too much longer until spring.

I'm actually 'lucky' for where I live, since it is already very sunny. Even sunnier than last year.

Hello sketch. Thank you for another interesting discussion. I personally hadn't heard of this. I think half of the people on the earth get a little depressed when winter gets here. It is very depressing to watch the entire earth die and then grow cold. Sure makes me depressed, and my fiancé as well. The people that enjoy winter are usually crazy in their own way. Such as thrill seekers that choose winter sports as their forte. As well as the guy that has been waiting all year stockpiling lights for Christmas. I like Christmas lights, I am just saying.. Good luck with your situation.

I think that the cold has a lot to do with my negative feelings during winter too though. Now I am wondering if there's been any research dealing with mood and temperature. Haha. Yes I think you are right that a great deal of people are affected by the winter season. Well thanks for your response. Have a great day! :)
