Do you like to eat sushi? Just like how there is etiquette to many things in Japanese culture, did you know there are specific ways how to eat sushi? First, you're not supposed to use chopsticks; sushi is finger food. And second, you're supposed to dip the fish in the soy sauce, NOT the rice. The rice is made to create texture in your mouth, so mainly at more expensive restaurants, they have more loose rice underneath the fish. Also, there is no such thing as "California Rolls" in Japan, well, maybe nowadays there are, but this is not considered traditional sushi to Japanese people.

Yes, I like it. No, I don't use chopsticks, and yes I dip the rice in the soy sauce because I like to do it that way, and there's less chance of the fish falling off. :D

This is really interesting, and good to know. Now, I'd love to know why sushi restaurants here in Canada, hand out chop sticks with sushi. I never figured out how to use them with something that big, so I just eat it with my fingers anyway. LOL Nice to know I was doing the right thing all along. Unfortunately this discussion has made me hungry, and now I want sushi!

Originally, it's finger food, but as time and place (different countries) changed (for cleanliness also), I'm sure that's why they'd pass out chopsticks. Also, they probably serve sashimi there? Sashimi, you'd need chopsticks to pick them up. I forgot to add, that you're supposed to put the whole thing in your mouth in one bite too. But rolls (which aren't traditional) are pretty darn too big, for that. Yes, I want some now too!

I have never eaten sushi and I really have no interest in trying it. I don't like fish at all. I never knew that there were rules to eating it, but that's really interesting.

I love to eat sushi but I use chopsticks for it! Haha. Now that I've realized I have learned a lot today about cultures. And I always dip the rice at the soy sauce, which was supposed not to be! I've heard of California rolls but I have not tried them out yet. Sushi is really one of my favorite Japanese of all time. It's so delicious and the taste is really exotic and memorable. Thank you for posting the information!
