Recommending new music

When you come across a request from someone for new music they would like, do you just offer bands or do you take it a step farther and help them find the best songs first? With me, I have my go-to band that I recommend to everyone who isn't looking for rap or country music suggestions. When suggesting someone listen to my favorite band, Kill Hannah, I often give them a "starter kit" list of four or five songs I think they would like based on what they told me they already like and then hope they like those songs well enough to dig deeper. But with other bands, I usually just give their name and maybe a short description of what they sound like.

I only offer what I am certain I like, for whatever genre. I tend to like certain songs rather certain genres so I would just suggest that certain song. If I don't have a song I like in the genre they're looking for, I'd just say I don't know any.

When someone does this to me, I then ask them back of what genre they are in to. I got stuck on to only a few genres before and now I am listening to any kind of music. I think that this helps a lot since you can share to more people the songs that you wanted. It is a good thing since you can now relate to the differences people have when it comes to music of their preference. At times even, if they are very particular about their genre, I keep on insisting that they listen to a different one and some times it turns out that they become hooked with that type of music. It is fun that way.
