OMG, some people should stay out of music, they're so horrible.

I'm doing some music reviews right now, and the track I just reviewed was one of the worst ones I'd ever heard. The singer was so far off key that he could break a whole bunch of windows. The background instrumentals seemed like they didn't belong, it sounded like they didn't know how to play guitar or anything. As the track progressed, it only got worse. It was like the guy just threw a bunch of music sections together hoping that they would fit. It makes me wonder why people like this even try to get into the music industry. If they went on any Idol type of show, they'd be laughed off immediately they are so bad. They're not all that bad though, there are some who are really good. I've heard some very good singers and even have MP3 tracks for one of them, that's how much I like the music done by this artist. I told one of them in my review today not to quit their day job, which clearly isn't as a musician because they sucked so bad. I really don't know why they even try if they know they suck, or maybe they don't know. Who knows. In the meantime, I try to find music that I like, and hope that I don't have to hear garbage too often each day I do this.

One person's meat is another person's poison. What you hate, someone else might love. That's one of the beauties of art. It is entirely subjective. We try to put objective standards on things, but in the end it's down to what people like and don't like. There's nothing rational about that. It's a little harsh to tell someone not to quit their day job if also not providing anything constructive for them to build on. With most art, talent isn't the end all be all of everything. People can learn to be good at things. They might not be the greatest, but very good isn't shabby. This artist may in fact suck to my ears as well, but in a few years, they might be a whole lot better at what they do. To say that people shouldn't try just because someone thinks they suck is a little arrogant. Whose to say what anyone should try to accomplish? A lot of great artists have been told to quit by people who thought they "sucked." Thank goodness for the rest of us, they didn't listen.

Once tone deaf, always tone deaf, nothing will change that, so I know. The only reason why I said what I did was because I knew that the artist wouldn't amount to anything, no matter how hard he worked. I've been active in the music world since I was a kid, have talent myself, just not enough yet to get anywhere. I took a shining to music when I was young, managed to play in school bands, winning contests, even singing solo a couple of times. I'd like to think that I know what I'm talking about, and my review seemed to be within the norm of all reviews made of that artist, so I don't think I was wrong, I wasn't the only one who thought he was horrible.

"Once tone deaf, always tone deaf, nothing will change that, so I know." I take it you've never heard of Beethoven? He was completely deaf when he wrote one of his greatest symphonies. You may "know" that the artist won't amount to anything no matter how hard he works, but that does not make it fact. It is an opinion and you have every right to it. However, don't call it anything other than arrogance on your part. I note that your resume doesn't include any national competitions and you don't state how big your competition was. I have no idea how good you are or are not and I wouldn't presume to judge you. But I can say with some assurance you aren't in possession of a grammy or a recording contract. "I'd like to think that I know what I'm talking about..." We'd all like to think that, it doesn't mean we actually know what we're talking about. A lot people knew with absolute certainty that the world was flat and they found out that they were wrong. I encourage you to pursue your music if it is something that is calling to you and recall this exchange when someone writes exactly the same thing about you that you've written about this artist. They will. To someone else's ears your music will make yowling cats sound melodic and they won't be shy about telling you. That is the nature of art. I just hope that when they do, they're kinder about it than you've been.

You must have a lot of patience to do that. I would just cringe. Have you seen the out takes about the tryouts for some of these talent shows? There are lots of horrible people.

I don't have cable so I don't get to watch them, but I used to years ago. Some that I thought were amazing would be voted off and that was a disappointment, and some of the bad ones kept going though for some reason. It does take a lot of patience, it's not easy to listen to crummy music, but when the good ones show up, they make it worth it. I've helped finance a couple of artists that really got my attention, and they appreciate it.
