Very hard to sympathize with teacher unions

With all of the crap in the news about teachers bad mouthing students of facebook, a teacher showing up to work drunk, teacher taping a students mouth shut and the list goes on and on. It is very difficult to sympathize with the unions fighting for pay and benefits. Dont get me wrong, I know there are always a few bad apples and we hear more about it now with constant news coverage. How do you feel?

Unfortunately, there are more than "a few bad apples" and ne-er-do-wells among the group known as "teachers" in this country. I can speak this truth as a teacher myself who, by God's grace never joined the union or subscribed to the filth they teach by way of political indoctrination, economic greed, and just plain cruelty to children. Again, the bell-shaped curve applies, as to all professions, but the teachers union, in bed with corrupt politicians holds enormous power in the hostage-taking of our children. While at one end of the curve may be sincere, even moral and fairly intelligent people, they often leave in face of the corruption. At the other end are the downright criminals and pedophiles, who love harming innocent children. And in the middle are the majority of inept and uncaring human beings who are corrupt, greedy and self-interested only. In the words of NEA Attorney Chanin, 2009 Youtube video of union meeting, "we succeed, not because we care about children, but because we have POWER". AND THAT'S THE TRUTH.

You are right. I dont think people chose their occupation due to a calling anymore. Just the most expedient way to make money.

laglen, gainful employment is certainly necessary and in and of itself not evil, but the wholesaling and abuse and indoctrination of innocent children for gain is NOT part of rightful gainful employment.

I agree, so as parents we have to debrief our children when they get home from school. I hope school of choice becomes the norm and I have noticed a lot more people home schooling

I agree with all you've said. But more than that...a teacher gets an "employment package" as their "salary". That employment package includes, medical insurance and payment into a retirement account and payment to their version of Social Security. Whatever the monthly "salary" is....deductions are then taken out for state/fed taxes (they don't pay into social security, they have their own similar kind of plan) then they get the "on the check" amount on their pay check. And who pays for their "employment package"? Tax payers.YOu and I pay for their full medical insurance and their retirement and their comparable to Social Security. Question..who pays for your medical, retirement and social security? You do. If you don't, you don't get it. My problem is this...why do I have to pay for their medical and retirement and social security, while I have to pay my own? And while I can't afford health insurance and me and my kids do without...I have taken care of their family. WHile I have no retirement becaue my companay didn't have any kind of plan and I couldn't afford one on my own cause my salary was low...I have paid for teachers to have a nice retirement. Same with the SS.. I paid in to my own, AND to theirs. So this is my big problem with teachers and other government workers. I have to pay for my self and my family AND them and their familys! That isn't fair! And all they are being asked to to do contribute their own money to their own health insurance/retirement. IF it wasn't for people like me and millions like me...none of them would have a job anyway! So I think these teachers are just being selfish, arrogant and greedy to throw such a tantrum as they are, even endangering children's education...all over them being asked to do some personal contributions (like the rest of us) to their current freebie...since the rest of us can't afford to pay them anymore so the states are going BK. Plus..bottom line is...either take the adjustment or get layed off and have nothing. No brainer there!

Good point! I think the whole thing boils down to them never having to deal hardly at all with unemployment so they don't see the "real life" staring them in the face. It's like they are in a different world. I don't think they are stupid, just ignorant of the "real" life....aka....spoiled! Now for police I actually don't have a problem with them getting all that and paying my part. Those guys have their lives on the line literally every minute of the day...even off duty. IT is a really hard job (teachers should be ashamed of themselves for carrying on how hard their jobs are..they haven't a clue!) I know teachers teach the education and all...but if push comes to shove...homeschooling is always an option, but what do you do with no police protection or help?

It should be a no brainer. But we've seen cities where government union workers were laid off (police and fire fighters, sometimes) because the union bosses would not negotiate to have each one pay part of his/her benefits and pensions. So, instead of everyone paying a little, hundreds get laid off. Pretty stupid to me. And, when it's teachers? Makes me wonder....if they're that stupid, should they be teaching anyway?

In my area many of the school districts have agreed to pay freezes. There will still be some lay offs due to the budgets, but with pay freezes the districts will be able to keep more jobs, which in turn helps the students. I truly respect these districts that have made these choices. Keeping your job at your current wage is far better than losing your job! I recently heard an awful story about my kid's school nurse. Apparently she let a little girl sit in the nurse's office for 3 hours without calling the parents.. and later they found out the little girl had a broken arm! There were a couple other incidents as well.. so this nurse ended up being fired. I heard about it because one of my good friends has always had issues with this nurse. At one point my friend's son had a colostemy bag.. and he'd come home everyday covered in his own mess because the nurse refused to clean him up or help him in any way.
