I have been thinking of selling on eBay. I know nothing about how to begin except a few articles I've read. I'd love to hear any and all experiences any of you might have and also some tips of how to be successful and what to avoid. Thanks, could be more than just me is curious about selling on eBay.

I haven't done much selling yet but have a pile of stuff waiting to go on. I've sold a few items (mostly stuff that's no longer needed, used, etc.). My main advice is to wait for a free listing weekend. They come along every 3-4 weeks, usually, and mean you can put stuff up for auction for free. You'll be limited to 5 listings per category the first time. Use the standard option of a 7-day auction and no buyout or you'll have to pay. Research similar item prices so you know where to set your sales level. For example, if there are 5 of the same item being sold for $10 each, there's no point listing yours at $20. You can do this beforehand and prepare your descriptions, prices, category choices and so on to make it easier when you list - just copy/paste from a document. Don't forget to include postage costs in your calculations (figure out how much it'll cost you and charge it extra or set your start price higher and offer free postage). Most of all - and most importantly - fill out a proper, full description and take a photo. Being absolutely honest in the description is VITAL for a good reputation (via feedback) and a real photo (not a promo shot from a website) shows people what they're actually getting. It's better to make a little less money in an honest deal than try to screw someone over, get caught and lose your reputation. Hope it helps.

Thank you ...this is a great start and I am taking notes :) I like the idea of free postage since I often see such a high postage asked. I know it's all the same, yet psychologically a huge postage charge feels like a rip off, even though it isn't..

I used to sell some stuff on ebay a long time ago. I'm sure I don't keep up with the changes, but I'd like to share my experience (as a seller and as a buyer) in case it is of help to anyone. Like other members already mentioned, it is important to use actual photo of what you are selling. Make sure the description of your item is accurate and detailed. If size is important to the item, measure it and put the measurement down in your description. Most of the time, I look at things on ebay and ended up not buying because I cannot be sure about the size. Sure I can ask the seller, but I never bothered - probably because I was not sure if I wanted to buy or not. If the measurement was there, it would help me to make a decision. Oh, it helps if you can put a coin next to the item when you photograph it. That way, it is clear what size the item is. As a seller, send out an invoice as soon as someone buys your item. Don't just assume that they will pay. Some people wait for the invoice or some people forget that they bought something, especially if it's done at night. Make sure that you post the item as soon as you received cleared payment. Late shipment can cost you a positive feedback and low feedback score could get your ebay account to be limited, and stops you from selling further until you increase the feedback score. If you cannot send out soon, for any reason, tell the buyer by sending a message. Most of the time, a buyer is just happy to know what is happening. Even if it is just a matter of one or two days. Let the buyer know. That could save you a feedback score. Speaking from my experience, I'd rather know when I can receive it rather than not knowing and having to wait for it. Most importantly, never hesitate to contact ebay themselves if you have any problem. It could save you money. Remember that when someone purchase your item, you pay Final Value Fee to ebay - a percentage of the final price the item fetch. If there is any problem with the transaction - such as buyer didn't pay for it, or buyer returned it, or any other thing, inform ebay and you can get back the Final Value Fee. Sometimes ebay make a mistake about the Final Value. Make sure you check the total price of item sold, important especially if it involves multiple purchase by the same person. I hope all that helps and if I think of any other thing, I'll write more.

Free listing is going on right now (up to 50 items). I have been selling on eBay for a long time, and I must warn you that things are moving slowly for most sellers right now. I don't know if it's the economy (not enough buying and a lot more selling) or just coincidence, but all the regular sellers are complaining about it. eBay has also started charging fees based on your sale price plus shipping, instead of just the sale price. It is supposed to encourage free shipping, but it is just going to line their pockets. The best advice I can give you is to go to the eBay discussion forums and read, then read some more. You will learn a lot from them and the tutorial eBay has set up. Just be sure you don't short change yourself by charging too little for shipping. I always try to get it as close as I can, but even then I get burned once in awhile. Good luck to you!

I have sold a few items recently and did well, so I would strongly suggest you make sure as the comment box one says is that you make sure you search for what other similar items are selling for so you do no short sale yourself. The other thing is the shipping costs. This one is important that you do not under include the price so that it does not cost you out of pocket for the shipping. It is always a bit tricky for me but so far I have done okay with it.

Perfumes, cosmetics and some electronics. I am fairly new and have done okay so far. By the way over at the other discussion which is good for both of us to know. She put a complaint to Ebay and the customer was sent a reminder. If she does not pay, the seller gets her fees back. Although the item sale would have been better at least she is not stuck withe the fees. Always great to hear bits and pieces about earnings here and there.
