I've been living in these apartments now going on 9 years.
They not the greatest but I like my little apartment and never had any problems with anybody here except the maintenance is really messed up and it takes forever to get stuff done.
Yesterday I got a notice that I had to take my blinds down that I have on my balcony.
My apartment faces the west and in the summer time I get the sun from about 2pm till sundown....that's why I bought some blinds to keep it's somewhat shady and keep my power bill down....I guess the owner came by and did a walk through the complex and didn't like people having stuff on there balcony
.
Now I'm totally exposed to the sun and I'm sure my bill is gonna go up quite a bit.
I have blinds and curtains but with the blinds it kept the sun from hitting my windows.
I'm really angry and I'm gonna see what options I have about keeping my place cool.
Do you live in a place were you have stupid rules?

Hi. missybear. That's awful the owner should not tell you that you have to take the blinds down. It is ridiculous. I do not have stupid rules where I live and if I did then I think I would leave. I have a cat and two hamsters even though I rent the property.

I had them up for years and they never said anything and all of a sudden.
And on top of that they gave us till the next day or they would charge us $50 on to our rent

I know there are supposed to be some sort of insulated curtains to help for such situations. However, I don't know how well they work and they are pricey. I'm not sure what other things you could do to keep the light from penetraiting your windows like that for all those hours in the summer.

It's really a shame that people have to be that way. Everybody is trying to save money these days and it's really gonna raise my bill quite a bit.

I found that when i was living in rented accommodation there was always something that was an infringement of the rules. When the weather was bad I would hang some washing on a clothes horse on the balcony and that was a no-no. Or I would park my car where I shouldn't. It's one of the wonderful differences between renting and owning.

They put notices about hanging your laundry on the balcony too but since I'm upstairs and Sconi put a clothe line up really low, they can't see that I have Laundry hanging everywhere

Hi. missybear. That is terrible!
Why would the owner feel like you should not have any blinds to your windows at your apartment? Blinds are offered anyway when you first move into your apartment. That is totally dumb and absurd! I don't have any stupid rules where I live at, but there is a curfew that tenants have to go by, I think that it is at 11 pm. They don't want people wandering around and hanging out during and after these hours. The new residents that live behind us started having so much of company. It seems like for almost a month, they would have company and people would come to visit them. So many cars were at their trailer, until it was so hard for my husband and my father-in-law to get into our yard. All types of cars were parked so close to the back of our trailer. It was just crazy! My husband told me that he was going to complain to the landlord about it, but he never did. About two weeks ago, our landlord mentioned that she had to get on these residents about having so many cars parked at their trailer during curfew hours. I have not seen them do this for almost two months now. So, I am guessing that the landlord does know about what has been going on. I think that it is very stupid that you can't have blinds on your windows at your apartment. If your electric bill gets higher, whom is going to pay it??? You of course! So, if the landlord expects you to pay rent on time, then you need blinds to your window to keep the sun from coming in. If they don't want to comply with this, you may need to take this up to the city municipal company. Maybe you can buy solar curtains that can keep the sun from coming through your windows and this also saves energy on your electric bill. In our last apartment that we stayed into, vertical blinds came with the apartment. I always thought that having blinds to any windows into your apartment or place of renting would be highly recommended. I don't understand this owner's crazy way of thinking!

I'm gonna check on some blinds that I can put inside my windows. I have some that came with the apartment but I'm thinking about getting some to put in front of them to keep it more dark...I hate being in the dark

hello missy,
Sorry to hear about your problem and situation now.
I lived in my own house and no rules are against, unless i will implement one for my kids (hehehe)
What if you put some hanging plants just to block some direct sunlight during summer.
Not again..if the owner doesn't like any plants hanging (ohhh)
I hope you can find other ways to keep your place cooler on summer.
have a great weekend

I'm gonna go back to the office and find out what I'm allowed to put up. I think maybe tint my windows inside but I'm not sure if that's allowed

It's depend on the rule but this kind of rule i wont to live there I don't think why the owner of the apartment is not allowing the blinds even he/she knowing that you have a good purposed why you put a blind on your balcony.. for me its nothing wrong for it.

Wal Mart sells black out curtains, but I am not sure they would do what you want. My first thought was the window tinting film, but it would be a shame to do something and then have the landlord make you take it off. It would be an extra expense, too. I would be tempted to get some of those "solar blankets" that are supposed to keep you warm, but are light weight, and I would hang them from cafe rings inside the window. I understand, the blinds stopped the heat before it ever got to you walls and windows on the west side and I am sure that is a better choice than anything I have suggested.

Living in an apartment sometimes they do have rules about what you can put up that will show on the outside. The land owners dont care what the people think they just want their rules obeyed. They want the place to look nice and if there are blinds up or clothes lines they might not think it looks nice. I would say put up thick curtains or blinds INSIDE your window instead of on your balcony. Sometimes landowners have the stupidest rules and to me this is one of them!

I'm checking on getting some blinds for inside my windows but it makes me angry that I have to go and spend money that I really don't have.

I don't suppose you can charge the owner for the difference?
Don't you just hate it when they suddenly change the rules on you for no apparent reason?

Not now, but I have. I used to rent from this lady and she would come over every Saturday morning.
She would just walk around the yard and then come knock on the door..come in and sit down for a while..lol. It was unannounced but she never went through my house. I have yet to figure out if she liked me or if she was just checking on things. She was 80 years old and there was no way I could bring myself to be rude, but there were times when I was very aggravated by her visits..lol.
I can't believe the owner is giving you a hard time about blinds. That is a stupid rule.

It really is, we're just trying to save money on the power bill but I guess that's not allowed.
I walked around the complex yesterday and seen lots of balconies still with blinds.
I will wait a week or so and then go to the office and see what's up with that.
I hate to be singled out for whatever reason

That's weird, I didn't think anyone would have rules like that. I haven't lived in an apartment so I don't have such experiences, but I did stay at a friend's apartment once. They had a little opening in the middle of the building, like a courtyard and I had accidentally dropped my shirt while hanging it by the window. They thought I was weird for dropping it. I guess they're really suspicious for some reason. They were really nosy about it too, like asking "how did you drop it there?"
