Is democracy the final goal of mankind? A democracy without food, health and education is valueless to those who are deprived from those basic preliminary requirements of life. Can we imagine of anything better than democracy or will we have to be content with what we have/ this sort of democracy with all its limitations and try to make it free from the said limitations? What is your opinion?

Democracies all over the world are failing because of its purely quantitative approach ignoring quality aspect of its constituents. An improvement over democracy is 'Intellocracy' as proposed by me at - http://intellocracy.blogspot.com Under intellocracy, values of voters are not same but differ based on the voters education and other qualitative features. This is aimed at bringing political power to the hands of intellectuals in a country to give the best of governance to the people.

Democracy as a concept is right. But it has its loopholes. We need to plug those. For example, the powers being given to leaders can be restricted. Every morning we receive newspapers, dont we? So let people take the decisions on whom to award projects, and whether or not foreign direct investments are right, or whether dearness allowance should be increased, etc. We have SMS facility. We have Internet. We can log in, with our unique Voter ID, and express whether we are for or against a particular proposal. As of now, politicians are getting away with a whole lot of nonsense, and we just become powerless once we finish voting.

Democracy becomes a mockery where people are not educated and aware enough about their rights AND RESPONSIBILITIES. India is the world’s largest democracy but most of us till today have a servile attitude…we need somebody to rule over us! Though our national anthem hails the people as the actual rulers of their own destiny, we still like somebody else to take decisions for us and accept that without questions. We’re still stuck in the colonial days of ‘saab, mai baap’! Even then I feel the internet and the telecommunication sector has brought in rays of light in this abysmal situation. This is one are where progress has really gone to the grassroots level and I see more and more people becoming aware of the need to assert themselves. Another thing that makes a mockery of democracy is our different attitude towards the different levels of society… we are so much in awe of people in the higher echelons while we feel that the lower class people (even if educated and working) can be dealt with shabbily. Everybody looks equal on voting day but once that one day is gone, its back to the many layers and divisions in society which make democracy a sham.

Benjamin Franklin said "Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote." Now, for those communist country saying they are more than democratic than any other nations. But, does their people has the liberty to speak out truly all the truth? To be always liberal and vigilant are always the machinery of a true democracy. Stand-up and be courageous accordingly to righteousness and truthfulness. Always govern and administer the whole nation with full Trust and Competence to self and and with each other.

I have also found this question very intriguing. Is Democracy the best form of Government? For one thing, I find it definitely an inefficient but safe form of government. By upholding individual liberties and making the possibility of an unreasonable arrest or confinement difficult, and permitting extreme dissent as a step not in the wrong direction, a commoner could breathe easy. But in a democracy decisions and attainment of justice takes an abnormally long time--so much so that it is more in tune with justice delayed is justice denied. In a democracy, everything[Developmental Activity leading to raising the standards of living of the common man] happening at a painfully slow pace. I am taking India as the example for this. It has almost taken 60 + years for the general public to assert themselves to our slimy politicians. It looks like some weak justice as to public offenders has begun to work. Look at the celebrities being jailed. One could not even imagine this say thirty years back! We look at the communist countries and wonder how people would have felt there! But then industriial development there has been good and a at a faster pace, than in India? Well Japan is an exception to every rule. Starting about the same time as India almost choosing the same route like India of technical collaborations Japan has attained technological excellence! India is just on the threshold of a take off after 60 + years!I feel the Westminster Model of democracy is responsible for the "slow progress". There is lot to say on this subject! I can go on and on!

Dear friend, I feel if democracy implemented in its right way, most of problems could be settled well. It is rule by people but it is seen rule by rich and influencial. If democracy is rule by and for people those much of problems could have been solved. Democracy rule to the fullest extend upholding its actual values I feel it could give a better result.

Well it depends on how democracy works in each country that accepts the democratic system of governance. In some democratic countries it workd so well that those who use their democratic rights and God given talent to work and make a good life, they actully do with the help of the system. Some who choose to be poor they live a poor. Yet, there also democracies where people become poor and desitute because of structural problems of their governments. For instance, in Australia, people disadvantage people are cared for by the society through the government social well fare system.

I don't think democracy is necessarily the epitome of political institutions, just the one that seems to please the most people in the world right now. A thousand years ago many people would be happy with any government that treated them fairly (or left them alone). There is still a strong trend toward this "do whatever you want as long as I am allowed to do my thing".
