We read what we think should be there, rather than what is there.

Many people highly recommend an extra set of eyes to look over our writing, to check for any flaws, whether it be spelling, grammatical, or just other elements that do not make sense. We have this grand plan of what should be out on the paper in our mind, and the longer the work, the more mistakes that could be prominent. We are reading what's in our head rather than what's on paper.

Yup. I call it "creative tunnel vision", and I think it happens both in positive and negative. You get so focused on a project that you're only seeing certain good things or alternatively certain bad things about it. You become blind to what's wrong with it, and sometimes even what's good with it. You can be thinking, "Oh, it's good the way it is! No bad mistakes!" or "This is the worst thing I've ever made and I couldn't possibly save it!" I started using the term in film school, because it's not limited just to writing. In the case of films, graphic design projects, paintings... in almost anything you can get so caught up you start to get blind. The best remedy is usually to step back and put the project down for a bit, and then come back with fresh eyes. Or alternatively, you can get someone else to look at the project with fresh eyes like you recommended. It's good to have a creative critique partner anyway, because it's like iron sharpening iron. You make your work that much better.

I think that I have been own both ends of the spectrum for sure. Especially the unable to see the good side of the spectrum. Every now and again, the bad side as well. Of course, it is really easy to do both simultaneously somehow. There are times where we are seeing all of the bad things, but somehow, someway it is not the right bad things. Someone to help work out the edges, which can be rough, that is a good thing. I do agree that writing is not the only thing, rather anything having to do with art is really something to consider a lot of the time. There are many times where we get caught up in far too much what we expect to be seeing. Fresh and unbiased eyes are a plus. Thanks for responding. Its appreciated. Have a nice day.

I always have the problem of deciding when something is finally "done". That is when I need someone to read what I have written. Otherwise, I will just keep rewriting it forever...lol My daughter used to do this for me, but she is too far away. I have to conquer this on my own now...tough job.

Indeed that really can be an issue a lot of the time. Doing it on our own, we are going to find its going to be harder to pinpoint what precisely is wrong. Yet we are going to be able to figure out in due time that something is in fact wrong. Its just we got a lot of problems rather locating the issue to say the very least. It does take some searching. I think that we might be able to catch most of the mistakes after a while but it will be a bit of a tough road to navigate. It can still be done, anything can still be done after all. It can be a tougher job however with that extra set of eyes. That much is for certain. Thanks for responding. Its appreciated. Have a nice day.
