I am interested in going on a cruise. I have never been on one. I have been doing some research and it is complex and confusing at this point. I am looking for tips, feedback and suggestions.
I am planning on traveling alone and I want my own cabin. I do not want a roommate. I know that I will be paying more but that is the way it is.
I live in Texas so I will have to fly to the port and back. Extra costs.
I am interested in hearing from mylotters who have been on cruises. What lines can your recommend? Are there any you would warn me against? What travel services can you recommend? Or should I go directly to the cruise line sites?
I would appreciate any tips, suggestions, feedback.

Considering you are going to travel one of the busiest cruse areas I would suggest that you consult a travel agent. What might seem like a deal on the Internet could be a disaster at sea. I was on an Alaskan Cruse with Royal Caribbean Lines. It was excellent.
Consult a travel agent because they could give you information and the true costs of the cruse. In addition tot he price quoted there are poet fees and taxes and you are expected to tip at the end of the cruse. All of that said it is still a very economical way to travel. Once you board the ship everything is covered, room, transportation, meals and entertainment. If you spend more money it is because you choose to do so. You may take day trips when the ship docks and you are on your own.
Just so you understand about the crew, for the most part they are highly educated and from foreign countries. I met one of the kitchen help (dishwasher I would guess from his dress) and talked to him. he was a college graduate from South America who spoke excellent Spanish and English. He could not find a job so he applied for one with the cruse company. i found that I was pampered by the staff and crew. they work very hard for their tips and they earn them.

Thanks for the info. I am on a budget so while I can afford a cruise, I still have to watch my money. For me it is going to be a true luxury but it is a possibility, I am going to be a solo or single traveler. I love and need my space. I do not want a roommate so I need to deal with what is known as the single supplement. I have been doing research and there are some lines that now cater to the single crowd. The rooms might be smaller or the supplement less. I will not be taking a cruise until 2013 so there is some time.

I have been dreaming of taking a cruise too during my vacation, still have not made it yet. I know there are many fascinating cruise routes. The one I am dreamimg of is the Alaskan cruise along the west coast of Canada. Many of my friends have taken and enjoyed that cruise, very scenic and amazingly beautiful.
How about you ? Which cruise are you thinking of taking ?

The Alaskan cruises are very expensive especially since I live in Texas. I am thinking of a cruise that leaves from Miami or Galveston and goes to the islands and / or Mexico.
Thank you for responding. You have been my only response thus far. It might be that most mylotters have not taken a cruise.
I am single and wish to have my own cabin. I do not want a roommate. I am looking for a cruise line that welcomes solo travelers.
