I just find out that 'The Hobbit' and 'The Lord of the Rings' are not the correct order to read the books, that one must first read 'The Silmarillion' first so can understand all the story, the mithology but was actually put together after Tolkien's death. I'm after this book in my language. I'm reading lotr and loving it.

I would not recommend that people read The Silmarillion first as it is a pretty in depth book and might put people off reading The Hobbit and The LOTR. I have not read the book myself, but I have glanced through it's pages. It is not so much a story as the other more well known books are, but more of a complete history of Middle Earth before the events that took place in The Hobbit and after. It gives a history of the Elves, Dwarves, Men and Wizards and is more like researching a family tree in my opinion. I think it is more designed for those hard core Lord Of The Rings fans who want to know more of the history behind the events. It is a pretty long and hard core read!

I would say that only the brave or crazy start with the Silmarillion :-) I loved it, I've read it several times, but I'm glad I didn't start with it. I think it makes more sense to read it after you've read Lord of the Rings and the appendices. If the appendices make you want to read more, then go for the Silmarillion, possibly also some of the other posthum books. As for language, I'd recommend English, but that is mainly because the Norwegian translation of the Sil was horribly :-)

Hi katie: I didn't know about this information even if I have read the books. I first have read Lord of the Rings, then I've read the Hobbit and my last book was The Silmarillion. But honestly I have to say that I don't really enjoy the last one because it's too complicated, it's full of names so it was harder for me. ALVARO

I did not read the book but I watched movie. I think it is better watch movies than read books. Watching movies will be more interesting than reading and also watching movie will consume less time than reading a book. Lord of the ring is really a good movie with good story. Yea if we have time, reading the story would improve our english a lot.
