people food are not allowed on pet?

Veterinarians always say people should not feed their leftover food to their pets, but one of my dogs has eaten people food for his entire 6 years of life and has no health issues. Do you feel it's okay to feed people food to pets or should you always follow the vet's instructions?

The thing is that people food got seasons and preservatives which can cause allergies to your animal. Also dog, cat any animal should have diet similar to natural with all vitamins and goodness. Animal food is prepared for them to meet their needs. Our food is not good for them as is high in fat, which can cause heart illness and many other. If even you dog is healthy now, still can develop illness in the future.

hi:) yes thats what the vets said too, but we can't afford to buy my dog a dog food, so since from the start he only ate people food, but the good thing with us is we dont use MSG on our food and we dont give him canned food either... thanks for your comment:)

Yes! I always feed our dogs with our leftover foods. Once they started to eat the leftover foods, they will not eat the dog food that I will give them anymore. So from then on I started giving them our left over foods. I see no problem with that and they are well taken cared of. Did the veterinarian really advised this one? I see nothing wrong giving my dogs our leftover food.

My dtr is a vet, and she gets on me about this all the time...and with good reason! Despite the allergies that can develop, dog are also prone to a whole host of diseases that us humans get too. Too much cholesterols and fats can clog their veins. They can become diabetic, develop allergies, and get obese. My Shepherd is allergic to a lot of additives that are in people food, but not in pet food. If she even gets part of a slice of bread, the yeasts in it give her an ear infection each and every time (and was that one really hard to trace down and figure out!) I do always follow the vets instructions, they went to school and studied for it for 8 years of their life, that means they know far more about animal health than us who haven't studied it. When a vet takes the time to explain exactly WHY people food isn't good for them, it does make more sense. Up until she became a vet, I had no idea that raisins in something would be harmful, or potatoes, and once it was explained why, it made perfect sense. Even chocolate can kill some dogs.

Well, I'm sure the vet knows best. However, we feed our pets people food all the time. I think if we didn't share with them, they would think their throats were cut. If we grab something to eat and bring it home they get their own fries for example. Yes, they are spoiled but I wouldn't have it any other way. We can't even pull the cutting board out, here they come full speed. Heck, even cats are in on the game. Best Wishes!

i don't really think its that it causes health issues.. i think its the weight.. apparently giving a dog one human plain biscuit/cookie is the same as giving a human 2 double cheeseburgers lol! so i actually think its just so your dog doesn't get really fat and obese, but if hes walked and exercised and is a healthy weight, i dont see it being a problem.

Hi flowerfest,... I quite agree on what you have state that its really okay to feed our pets some of our left overs. But be sure that its not yet spoil because it might give them troubles. We also pet at home he did eat our left overs. But there were pets that already adopt that kind of food(pet food), when they will eat that left over food it will make them vomit.
