Homemade roasted chicken for diets

I found out that many dishes that are filled with calories if you buy them out, have smaller amounts when made at home. Roasted chicken is one of them as you only have to salt and pepper the bird, place a bit of butter or oil over it, place it on a rack and to the oven. I like to roast it slowly so th fat drips away. I used to do it with butter and pepper but it´s now forbidden in my diet so I just salt it and put some oil as when you grease a pan. The skin is cooked crisp, no fat at all, so you can eat it also and all that fat is under the chicken. Sometims I halve onions and place them on the side, sometimes I do the same with apples. YUMMY and fat free. No fats from the chick, no fats from frying (as in fast food chains). Serve it with some rice or mashed potatoes. If you want to make grave with the drippings, you place them in a cup, freeze them, throw away the grease and only use the jelly under it. I somtimes use that (it´s only protein) and thicken it on the range with some cornflour. Do you make your own roasted chicken? Are you aware that homemade food has usually less calories than food bought at restaurants?

This is why I would rather eat homemade meals then going out to dinner. First of all you don't always know what you are eating. Second, you don't know how healthy or unhealthy they made the foods. I know that the more you eat out the more you gain weight. That is why when I go out I usually eat only half the meal and take home the rest for lunch the next day. I also try to eat out only about once a month. Its good to get in the habit of eating home cooked meals. My chicken I put it in the rotissuerie and it gets rid of all the fat.

When I was diagnosed with cancer, the first no was to eat at a restaurant. The doctor said noone knew about the hands that touched the food, no matter how expensive the restaurant was. I will eat out just once, in 2 more weeks, because I have been invited to the Gold Anniversary of some friends. But I mostly think that the food I make is better than most.

Sister I rarely eat outside, the food there is full of spices, oils, chilly etc, they reuse the oil, these cause indigestion and acidity.. After reading the details my mouth watered, but let me tell you, i and kalyani both have stopped (almost) fish, prawn, eggs, chicken and meat.we are mostly on veg.. but if we meet by grace of god, here or in your home, you have to cook for me lol Thanks for sharing Have a nice day ahead. Hi bhuwan, Yesterday my eldest daughter came to visit me and I told her that I had and invitation to go to India. How I wish I could go!!! But if I do, I will cook for you and Kalyani will have to teach me the secrets of indian cooking. I am slowly eating less meat and have stopped eating the meat that has more fat. I love fish, but even fish have problems now because people have polluted the sea . THe chicken I eat now has nothing to do with the hens my grandmother prepared when I was a child. Then there was no roasted chicken but many dishes made with the hen. Those were other days. We had no fridge so we bought once in a while a big chunk of ice from the iceman.

I agree, and I don't like fat much, in fact, my BODY doesn't like fat much and my mother always cooked pretty low fat - she was trying to keep my dad from having a heart attack - well, he did have one, but that's not what killed him - the cancer did...

I never liked skin, and there are probably more foods that I don't like that I won't eat than that I don't like and will... I don't like pepper and wouldn't have it in the house if I lived alone...

I mostly eat what I like, but usually if you cook from scratch, meals will be better than the ones you buy when dining out. Now that I´m on chemo, I have had to change my eating habits as many foods are forbidden. I have to eat with little fat but I will NOT eat unsavoury food just because of that So I´m experimenting with what I can eat. Roasted chicken is fat free, even if you eat the skin, provided you roast it slowly.

You can do the same with no skin, no pepper. I am not using any pepper since I started with chemo. Or you can roast it with the skin on and take it away later.

I make roasted chicken too at home and love it. My husband used to not really like this but now he does. I make mine similar to yours only I do add a little butter to mine. I also like to season it with a cajun seasoning that I have as it adds a little more flavor to it.

I used to do it with butter instead of oil, but I´m in chemo now and cholesterol levels go up so the doctor forbid me to eat butter. Now it´s oil for me. Some of the spices I used are also out.. I bought some caribbean spice mixture when I went to Aruba in March and did not have the posisbility to use it. I´ll do it when chemo is over.

I am definitely aware of the fact that foods that are prepared at home are far better for you than the majority of foods that you are able to get at restaurants. However, I can honestly say that I've never made an attempt to roast my own chicken. We did, however, recently get a rotisserie toaster and my husband is dying to get some chicken and try using that just so we can see how it tastes to make one of our own.

It is very simple, dorann. Specially now that your hubby cann´t eat spicy food, just buy a chicken, put salt (better still if it´s low in potassium), a bit of oil ( as if you were greasing a pan) and let it roast slowly. YUMMY!!!

I think if you want to reduce fat in chicken, you have to sacrifice the skin, terrible, that makes it delicious but sometimes the component that makes our food more delicious is the same component that makes it harmful so it keeps me wondering

Many people sacrifice the chicken skinas you say, but in this case it is fat free. I roast the chicken at medium temperature so the fat slowly drips away. The skin roasts to a crisp, no fat, thin marvel

In the Philippines we have a snack here made from deep fried chicken skin bought by the grams, really delicious and you can even eat it with rice, I know it's not healthy but who care if I want to indulge in it once in a while, just once in a while unlike when I was younger and more active.

I think I have told you before, but eating out is NOT an option for me, we have a couple of places on the Island, but one is Pub Fare (greasy, greasy, greasy)..and the other one would cost more for one meal that I would spend normally in a month on groceries. So, the only only alternative is HOME cooked. A dear friend (whom is now 93, and I have learned so much from)always boiled a kettle of water and poured it all over the external parts of the chicken before she baked it...and her reason, it released the fats below the skin, and also makes the skin much crispier! She also did this with turkey! I am now doing this and do find more more fat released! I think, I prefer home-cooking mainly because I KNOW what I am eating..the ingredients included, and how it was prepared! Right off the topic of this discussion...the same friend that asked me the questions about "chopka" and "Gran Chaco"..also told me yesterday that he spent 10 months in "Vina Del Mar" and he said that should be quite close to you as it was close to the port of Santiago. Do you know the area?

At Viña five years ago - A friend took this picture while we were in one of the beaches at Viña deñ Mar.
I go to Viña del Mar at least once every Summer. It is 2 and a half hours away from Santiago. The place is awesome and the coast from Vallparaiso to Con con is awesome. I´ll check now if I have a picture either of Viña or its surroundings. I will try the way you do your chicken as I need to eat food with hopefully no animal fat while on chemo.

I did know that making things at home was better. It is also cheaper. The only reason I don't do more cooking at home is because I don't have a kitchen yet. I hope to get that taken care of in the next week or so. I hope you are doing well! Have a great week!!!

Did you know that the roast chicken that you buy already cooked has been infused with a broth high in fat? This is another reason to use home made.

I didn´t know that. But then I don´t need to know that, because I have never bought a roasted chicken. I have tried it once or twice at friendf´s houses and I prefer my own bird. And it´s cheaper.

You are welcome. And if you roast the chicken slowly and on a rack, the fat drips away and you can treat yourself to a fatfree skin.

A lot cheaper, in my experience! And it stands to reason: restaurants have to pay a lot of people until you gey your dish. With food cooked from scratch, the chef is free

Hi Marguicha! The only way I do enjoy chicken is to slow roasted in a baking bag and enjoy it very much. I do enjoy the skin also as this is where most of the flavor is hidden for me. Oh yes because I am very conscious about what I eat I tend to eat way more my own home made meals then those fro restaurants. I do eat out from time to time but am always watching our what I consume.

I know that when I eat at restaurants, whatever I eat will have more fat (and of the bad quality) than the one I use at home. I don´t eat much at restaurants and now they are in my no-no list for some time.
