I went on a surprise visit to see my parents and granddaughter in Florida last week. Loved surprising them all and they were surprised and very happy to see me. I have not seen my parents in over a year. There for only 4 days came back sick as a dog. I went to the doctors and I'm suffering with brochial issues he prescribed three different medications. Well the cough medicine I can't take after one day because it is keeping me wide awake and it cost me $31.00 dollars. I have been awake since 9am Tuesday morning and now its Wednesday after 3pm. The three medications that I brought cost 67.00 dollars plus 25.00 for the visit. If I didn't have a discount prescription card the medicine would have cost me 162.00. I can't believe the cost of medication it is an outrage. I don't know what people do who don't have healthcare or a prescription plan. There has to be a better health system in this country for all citizens. Now if only I could go to sleep. Has this ever happened to you that you took a medication and you couldn't sleep? If so, what did you do to eventually fall asleep?

I can appreciate your concern on the cost of medications. I get the health card, so I get a discount of medications that are prescriptions. This doesn't apply to over the counter medicines which can still be expensive. The same with appointments, as the doctor I visit allows me to use my health care card and not pay. However, for most years I paid the full amount for all medications and it can be very expensive. As for not sleeping, your medication must have had that ingredient in it that can keep people awake, not sure what the name is now. I avoid those meds. In fact, you can get over the counter meds that will help you sleep when you have a chest infection.

I have to admit that I am astonished at the US health system. I have often heard of people struggling to get basic health care.

This medication said the side effects could be drowiness or trouble sleeping. I thought for sure that I would get drowsy because I usually have a low tolerance for medications. Nyquil puts me out in half an hour. As for the cost of doctor and medications its like you have to be rich to survive or die if you are poor. Living in the US you would think by now they would have fixed the health care system, after all there are other countries such as Canada that have a much better system for their residents.

alteril is the best OTC sleeping pill but i would ask the doc or pharmacist before taking it with your other meds. i always have insomnia so thats nothing new to me but im on 11 meds a day and with out insurance just 1 would cost almost 1,000. another one 300-400 so yeah they rob you blind

OMG that is alot of medicine and alot of money. I just wonder what the elderly do when they are sick and live on a fixed income. Its outright robbery. I ended up being awake for 40 hours straight till I fell asleep for only 2 hours and 12 minutes. Hopefully I will get a goodnight sleep and that this cough will go away soon.

Personally I have often wondered how people with even Medicare before they were offered Prescription help did it? I know even with all the Health problems I have, my Insurance from work is vitally important and I know is a Life saver. It does cost a lot even with Insurance. Right now I over over $2000 but I cannot imagine what it would have cost if I would not have had insurance. I would probably not be alive.

Yes, I wonder especially about the elderly living on a fixed income who most have some type of illness usually. Its just a shame that we have to live this way when people in Denmark and Canada can have such better healthcare system. The US is so behind in so many ways I'm wondering how we could call ourselves the greatest country to live in.

Basically, to get to sleep you will have to let that medicine wear off. The codeine does this to a lot of people. I always ask my doctor to prescribe Tessalon Perls, as they are non narcotic and do better for me than the (expensive) codeine cough syrup. I have no health insurance. I have not been to see my doctor in almost two years. I did get my flu shot last year and I have already gotten it this year.

I had a mentally handicapped client who was sensitive to codeine. We had to tell the doctor every time she got a prescription that she did not want a codeine cough syrup. Insurance and medicaid do not pay for cough syrup so it got expensive for her and then she could not take it. Her mom would buy her medicines with Dextro methorphan, but that can do the same thing, and that is when I learned about Tessalon Perls which are tiny little liquid gels that stop coughs really well without making you stay awake or fall asleep.

I am sorry for your sickness, and hope you pay more attention arranging your trips with better precautions. You are right, without good health you have nothing, especially for elder people.

Hi and a happy day to all ! Health is wealth. No matter how much you earn, when your body is ill and you feel miserable, you aren't enjoying 100% of your life. Body and mind should be healthy as well as the spirit. It took me so long to realize that these three factors are all connected. There will be a time that you feel your body is aching but wou've been wondering why, but the truth is that your mind and spirit needs relaxation in order for the body to turn out well. I am earning good money while im still single and do shopping a lot. I get what i want, i buy what i want. But i regret times that i dont have penny left because i spent it all to buy medicines when im sick. It became like that for about 6 months until i recovered. Now i dont have a job, im thinking of being more healthy. I am planning to get a new job this month and praying it will go well. Enjoy your day.
