I believe the media has made everyone so paranoid of germs..

I have gotten to the point that if I do anything, I wash my hands. I wash my hands more in one day, than I used to probably in an entire week. Have you noticed any changes in the way you look at germs and bacteria now that it is so stressed on the media.
I have a show on right now and they are talking about the upcoming or new movie 'contagion' and how the desease is being spread all over New York so quickly. They are following one lady through the day and showing how she, alone, spreads the disease so rapidly. SCARY!!

i agree with you i think the media is way over exaggerating about germs i dont want to sound gross or discusting but i hardly ever wash my hands i have no problem going outside riding my horse then coming inside and eating a sandwich without washing my hands first i have never been a germ phobe and i dont think i ever will be i think the movies like contagion are just hollywood movies and they are not real so there is nothing to be worried about i think it is a scary thought so i just dont think about it

It is good for you that you just don't think about it, because the way the doctor said it, 'everyone gets a mindset about germs, and then they don't want to touch anything that has been touched by many others without sanitizing your hands'. I din'tused to be this way, it's just that I have heard about it so much. You can't walk through my mom's house if my brother is there without him saying 'did you wash your hands? And then my mom got in the habit and now I don't say that to everyone, but I am continuously washing my hands.
I mean, I am not crazy doing it, but I am washing so much more than I used to.

One of my room mates is not heeding the message.
I wash my hands often. I must wash my hands at least 25x a day. I am going to have to begin using the Avon lotion in a jar to keep my hands moist. They are beginning to feel like sandpaper.
I studied to be a medical assistant, and the life cycle of a germ can be long. Colds and influenza can be passed from someone who blew their nose and touched a doorknob that you happened to touch right after. I do not like being sick, so I wash my hands quite often.

I haven't seen it, but that movie and the doctors on television discussing the movie and passing on germs is what caused me to start this discussion. They showed a scene or scenes where the lady used a ketchup bottle that a woman with a disease had handled and then she made her daughter a hotdog and with the same hand she handled the ketchup bottle, she broke off a piece of the hotdog to put in her cute little daughter's mouth.

Did you happen to see that movie Contagion? My friend and I treated ourselves to a matinee the other day and that is what we watched. It was pretty good! Then she invited me back to her house to eat some pulled pork she had made.

It is a pretty good movie. This is exactly how influenza and other bugs get passed around, so it is always a good idea to wash your hands when you have come into contact with things others touch on a regular basis.
There is a thing to being too clean as well, but washing your hands often is not going to cause problems for you.

Trouble is that we then don't expose ourselves to the germs to the extent we did 50 years ago and are therefore more prone to catching the bugs today.
You go for a holiday in India or Africa and have to be so careful about what you eat or drink while the locals happily consume everything with little ill effects.
Is this progress?

I don't think it sounds like progress. I am not sure.
I do know that the manufacturers of hand sanitizing products have greatly increased sales in the last very few years.
And, I never used to think anything about going to a store and getting a cart to push. Now, I don't want to touch one, and many stores now have the sanitizing wipes along side the carts to clean them and your hands.

Wow! I've never seen that at a supermarket! A bit OTT I think.
Where's my face mask and surgical gloves.

You know, on this doctor show I was watching, they said it would not be bad, or it would be wise when going to a doctor's office or visiting a hospital to wear a mask. The gloves and masks will probably become common some day, the way it's going.
There was a man who was on the show who said that he had gotten it in his mind because of the type of show it would be that day about germs and all, that when they were putting his makeup on that he was thinking, where has she had her hands.

Man, that has to be tough worrying about that all the time. I feel for you. I worry that whatever I am allergic to be it pork or seasoning that I will take int he thing again, and it is only those to things I have to rule out, I think!

Yeah. I guess you would wash your hands an awful lot knowing you are allergic like that to corn. That must get scary and very frustrating sometimes. You may have to start wearing gloves. Would that help. I mean if you touch it, does it cause you issues?

A German sociologist, Ulrich Beck, has made a career out of his theory of Risk Society. I won't go into it in detail, but basically he says that Modernity has changed our entire perception of risk.
"(He) argues that whilst humans have always been subjected to a level of risk - such as natural disasters - these have usually been perceived as produced by non-human forces. Modern societies, however, are exposed to risks such as pollution, newly discovered illnesses, crime, that are the result of the modernization process itself". There are others, like WMD's and terrorism.
His suggestion, and one my own studies agree with, is that since most of these "big" risks are out of our control, our Western society has turned to dealing with the risks we CAN deal with. It;s a bit like looking for a lost ring under the lamplight despite the fact that you dropped it in the unlighted space, simply because you can see in the light.
I was a cook for years, and it used to drive me insane the way the health people would keep making it almost impossible to produce good food because of their over-the-top safety and health rules. I have NEVER had a case of food poisoning in any kitchen, domestic or commercial, and I don't wash my hands every five minutes.
It is paranoia, perhaps understandable, but we leap onto thje bandwagon because it makes us feel, mostly quite wrongly, that we are doing something to decrease risk. The real answer is much harder: reverse Modernity, which means reversing globalisation. Can't be done, too much vested interest, both ideologically and economically.
Probably a bit more information than anyone needed, but hey, I love the sound of my own ... er... fingers typing.

I guess that is true. Let me tell you a story about a guy I dated.
He was a counselor at a school, and he also was making kids videos on the side for 'just say no'.
He said something one day, and he used a word I wasn't familiar with. I asked him what it was. He answered me, but acted like I was stupid. Boy, I laid into him! I told him he was in a profession where I wasn't familiar with some of the words that were used having to do with the job. And I told him I am in the newspaper business and there would be newspaper lingo that I would use that he wouldn't understand! And that he had better not ever act like I was stupid again when it came to something like that!
He said ok.

You did a great job expressing your thoughts on this topic. I can see that you are definitely an intellectual. I missed out on that gift myself. Maybe I have some other characteristic that will make up for it in some way.
Yes, we have fallen into a trap of believing if we do some extra cleaning on ourselves that we can prevent some big disaster somehow, when in fact we are really doing very little that is going to help at all.
You are impressive.

Hiya chrys,
Just washed my hands again as I have been out with my Dog and since I have not had a Dog for ages its something to get used to again washing my Hands more than what I normally do and I wash them an awful lot anyway.
Not that a Dog has obvious Germs but I do it anyway I always wash them very well and shake the excess water off.
Especially when I have a Cold I always wash rinse and then shake the water off withoug contaminating Towels or Kitchen Cloths.
Yes all this Germ stuff can be scary at times but we have to live with it too.
Sounds like a great Film gal.xxx

You know, I have a big dog, Moses, outside. I just love that pooch so much. I guess he's about 8 years old now. He's my big baby! You know, when I pet Moses, I don't get grossed out for some reason about hurrying and washing my hands like I do in other instances. I don't know why. I just realized that. I guess touching public stuff is where I feel lots of nasty is, cause so many people who have touched so many things have been there.
!!!
Pet your doggie for me!

Blueboy is gorgeous. I know you love him.
Moses is part chow and his momma is a rotweiler. He looks like a chow and has almost a solid black tongue and when anyone sees him (like the police when someone has left the gate open and he's slipped out) they call him a chow. He is kinda spooky looking to most.
He weighs in at about 100 or so, and he has a big thick head like a rotweiler. Big thick neck and all.
I have always said he had eyes like John Trivolta and walks like John Wayne.

Hiya chrys,
Moses that is a lovely name for a Dog to be sure. What kind is he. Is he a Mastin? They are very fierce looking but very affectionate.
Actually I don´t have a thing about washing my hands after playing with the Dog but I am aware just as a precaution.
I did see a very scary Operation of a Lady won´t say who that had her liver affected by a parasite which is from a Dog and they saved her life.
That´s all I will say as the rest of it is not nice to write about or talk about.
But way before that ages ago I was aware that they can carry parasites through no fault of their own.
So I do have a thing about that especially when handling food.
We actually had a Friend who was also affected by Dog parasites and he had to be operated twice for the size of the tumour as it was in such an awkward place but now he is fully recovered.
Yes People here still pick up the Fruit and things with no protection at all but most of us wear the plastic gloves and use the correct bags otherwise they don´t let you buy anything.xxx
Big hugs to your Doggie from me too and from Blueboy him at the top there just on the left he is very affectionate and has so much energy too.xxx

chrystaltears,
I just have to disagree that the media has made everyone paranoid of germs when it is a fact that most of us are not doing enough as far as personal hygiene is concern. I do not know if you've actually read about statistical compilations which reveal a big majority of under and post graduates that literally do not wash their hands after visiting the toilets.
Also, thanks to the media - we are made to be aware that the best preventive measure against the spread or catch of flu virus is not to increase with the intake of health supplements or medications but to wash our hands and keep them clean. Or, that we should not use our bare uncleaned hands to touch our faces to prevent the spread from accelerating.
So, I wouldn't say that the media is making everyone paranoid of germs.

Thank you so much for your input. I always enjoy reading the responses you leave. You ave a way of just being yourself and saying what you think. Yes the college graduates according to statistics are much more readily keeping their hands clean that the ones who didn't go as far in school. I am sure everyone would totally agree with you on this.
And it is true, the media has brought to our attention greatly that if we don't want to catch the nasty flu, washing our hands is a huge way to help against it.
So, where did you go to college?

This is true.
Everyone is so obsessed with being clean and germ-free, but really, you're putting yourself in more harm than good. If you try to prevent any contact with germs, you're putting your immune system in danger, because your body isn't used to germs. So, when you are exposed to them, you can easily get sick.
And this whole frenzy about germ killing and sanitizers isn't helping much, either. We're just creating more deadly forms of germs as the stronger ones develop. People make germs look like the most horrible things ever now, but really, they're just a part of life. Get one with it.
Happy mylotting!

Yeah. You are right. Killing all the germs we, and being obsessed with it can cause us to mess up our immune systems to germs. But once you get in your head that things are 'nasty', how are you going to pass up washing your hands. Your mind won't let you. But I guess no matter how we try to avoid germs, we will still consume plenty of them without knowing.

I have to agree with you;when I was young my mum used to say that everyone had to 'eat a peck of dirt before they die'! These parent who wrap their children up in cotton wool run the risk of them being more open to infection if (or when) they do come into contact with any dirt or bacteria!

That is right. We have to get a little dirty sometimes, and I didn't get crazy about washing my hands until last couple of years, and I have made it pretty good in this dirty world. But now, I think I have to wash all the time.

I have worked in the medical years for several years, therefore, germs is something we guard ourselves from immensely. We are trained from the very beginning to treat all people as walking germs.
Granted I am not afraid to touch people and or eat with them as well, but when it comes to the working and or unknown public I obsess with washing my hands.
I bet that it has to be scary watching this show, but in reality it is true that we just do not know what we are exposed to on a daily basis.

That is so true. Media is letting us in on so much that we would never have thought of at one time. I remember when we had a pail of water at my grandmas on the front porch and whomever was outside playing or doing anything or just came to visit and was thirsty, went to that pail and used the very same dipper. Never thought a thing in the world about it, and now the kids will barely drink from their parents tea glass, etc.

A new movie? I might just check it out
I'm actually scared of germs too, I wonder how my friends could like touch the floor or touch something I consider is dirty and then use their hands to pick up food and eat. When I was a kid, I use to wash my hand all the time, several times a day to the point my hands got all dry because of too much soap. I still wash my hands often but I try to just wash only before I eat. I remember watching a show how being a clean freak isn't too healthy. There was a Doctor who dipped his hands in the toilet and tried to touch the lady who was a clean freak, it was pretty funny!

Now, that had to freak that clean freak out! That would freak ME out!
I worked with a lady once at the telephone company who was unbelievable, and she looked miserable while she was doing it and so skinny and unhealthy. She was go in and use the toilet and kick the door open with her foot, than wash her hands and do all these struggling acts to use the soap and get the paper towel. It was a site to see. It really was!
