Using pins in fabric...can you sharpen the point of pins?

I am getting back into quilting and discovered those wonder quilt pins....just regular straight pins but longer cause they have to go through a thicker pile. I also discovered the giant safety pins made for quilting for pinning together the front, batting and backing all together in corners to keep it all straight while you do the actual quilting. Again...amazing little tools! My question is....does anyone know how to sharpen pins like this? They just seem so dull and hard to push into the fabrics when layered. Even the safety pins...I use them to pin the interfacing to the back of cotton fabric and then applique on the front side...and even just those 2 thin fabrics...they are hard to press into. I know they are slightly a little thicker than the straight pins, but I have noticed it also on the pins. I have that old fashioned style of pin cushion... the strawberry looking ball with the little "bud" tassle for needles, and got that not only as it is tried and true for durability, but I had heard that the stuff they put inside the cushion is something that helps keep them from getting dull as opposed to being pushed into just fabric. THis stuff gives with the intrusion of the pin and allows it to stay in there, but also it is firm enough to hold the pins. I was wondering if this might also "sharpen" the points some, but I have used all these pins enough that if that were the case, I wouldn't be asking this question! So..any of you crafters out there that use pins....got any suggestions? I am worrying about the pins making holes in the quilt fabric and that starting a "tear" or opened hole problem in the quilt. Thanks for any suggestions, comments of tips!

If I remember correctly...someone told me to push them into a bar of soap..it gives them a little coating and they glide easier through the material. That was a long time ago but it actually makes a bit of sense to me.

Now that's a thought. I'll check it out. They seem to slide okay, once they first penetrate the fabric, but getting the point into the fabric is the problem. I don't want to make holes by seperating the threads which is what it is doing.

the "bud" on most "tomato" pin cushions generally have something like sand in them to polish rust off needles or pins however, if you really think they could be sharper, and I agree that sometimes they could be, a very high quality nail file could be used to file them sharper - just be very careful how/where you file them...

Is that what that is for? I thought it was for the needles! I'll give that a try...I am not looking forward to hand sharpening all these pins!!! Thanks!
