Vegemite kisses

Australia has many unique things about it, not least of which is Vegemite. What is Vegemite? you might ask. It's a yeast culture that is reduced till it is a dark brown/black spreadable paste, which most Australian kids are brought up on from an early age. Lots of vitamin B, salty tasting, and most visitors take one taste and run screaming lol. Our dogs love it. So, give the dog a slice of bread with vegemite on it and they love us forever, and if we make the mistake of bending down to pat them when they finish, it's VEGEMITE KISSES time. The stuff sticks to the fur around their mouths (until they lick it all off), and what we end up with is a delightful smear of vegemite and dog spit all over our cheeks. The moral: I'm not sure - is it, Don't feed your dogs Vegemite, or is it Don't let your dogs kiss you? Lash

I haven't known anything about Vegemite. But I can imagine what are you going through as we have similar experiences with my dog, Binne, when she takes her Salmon oil drops. She simply loves the salmon oil (I think if it was up to her, she would drink the whole bottle at once!) but she always soak her beard into it. Do you know how the salmon oil smells? If not, be sure you wouldn't like to know! Simple water doesn't make the smell go away and it doesn't disappear no matter how much she licks her mouth. I found a way of reducing the "damage": I put the oil on a large plate where she can lick it without soaking her beard in it. Oh, well, sometimes she still touch it with a few hairs of her beard but it is easier to clean after.

I think you are luckier. If Vegemite has no bad smell, the Vegemite smear and the dog spit from your cheek go away with a little water (and soap, maybe?). But the salmon smell is here to stay! We have a child in the neighborhood who, even though he doesn't get kisses from Binne, always says: "this dog smells like fish".

I never knew dog's can eat vegemite! Personally, I was born in Australia but I really don't like the salty taste of vegemite. I can't stand it! I wouldn't want it spread over my sandwich. My dad once went out to woolies to buy some nutella and he came back with vegemite. At first I thought it was a different brand of chocolate but once I tasted it, it was so horrible! I know it's pretty good for you and it's very rich in vitamins but why is it always the healthy stuff that always taste bad. Nice tip by the way, a nice way to offer your dogs a treat but I would definitely would not want a dog to kiss me with their sloppy mouth filled with vegemite!

There you go, we don't all fit the vegemite-loving stereotype. I do, unfortunately, I buy the stuff in the biggest jars. Lash

It is an aquired taste. Because it is so strong you have to use it in small amounts. I used to eat it quite a bit when I aquired a taste for salty things but I gave it up because of the high salt content. I used to melt a teaspoon of vegemite in a cup of milk. Yum. Very interesting flavour and better for me than chocolate.

Hmmm not at all sure that vegemite is good for dogs and I have no wish to give up doggy kisses.
