This lady had a huge schocker when her brother went to Canada on her cell phone. I will be taking a cruise in December My cell phone turns off and I do not turn it back on until I am back off the ship. I try to let everyone know that texts me that I will not be able to talk with them during this time Anyway here is the yahoo link for those that might need to know charges that can occur. http://news.yahoo.com/woman-floored-off-hook-200-000-phone-bill-040930299.html

Thanks for the info. Luckily, I don't travel out of country. Although I might in the future so I'll need the link as reference.

Yes the minute I get to the port and know we will be heading out to international water I shut my phone down even as I get out of the car. I can't get into trouble that way with the phone. I felt so sad for this lady. I am so glad I am not tied to a contract phone anymore! To me they are useless predators that charge you for every cent they can and still try to tell you how much of a valued customer you are for paying on time!

You're right. We only have 3 telecommunications provider here in my country and I think all of them are leeches. They have different kinds of schemes to make you pay every month. It's better to be a prepaid subscriber than a postpaid subscriber, believe me.

If you stay longer abroad it can be way cheaper to buy a prepaid sim card. It's what I do. So I have next to my dutch also a Hungarian and African sim card. My dutch phone I only switch on once a day so I can read the sms. If someone would call me at that moment I don't answer the phone. Personally I think it's a shame how much they dare to charge. Few years ago my daughter did call every 3rd day I was staying in Hungary for 3 weeks. Not only she had to pay but als I had and my bill was over 500 euro. And I did not had very long phone calls at all. So that was a very good lesson not to use the own provider anymore.

My plans are to go to Italy in the next couple of years. I won't talk to anyone til I come back I just figure its much more simple that way. I am sure I can find a cafe for laptops to stay in touch with emails much cheaper than a huge cell phone bill Thanks for the advice though...that is interesting to find out. My cell I have now does not have a sim card.

My roomie and her mom went on a cruise last year. Her mom took her cell, but had it off while she was on the boat - the roomie didn't even take hers.
