Are canned dog foods fit for human consumption?

Our guardian's friend phone in and said that she mistook dog food for a leftover viand so she ate it. We are worried that something adverse might happen. Will she be alright? Can humans eat dog food?

Yes, they can. I can't see any reason your guardian's friend couldn't feel well after eating the dog food other than if the food was old or the can was opened long ago. But this can happen with human cans, too. Dog food factories also have standards to respect so what's inside dog food cans is definitely edible. I know a story of a guy that left his country to a better job and, because he didn't earn enough, he ate only dog food, because it was cheaper.

Hehehe! From where I come from, canned dog foods often cost more than canned goods for humans (e.g. corned beef, meat loaf, tuna). Well, anyway, she has not yet called back to tell us if she feels anything wrong.

Ahahaha! I never thought of tasting dog food before. Usually I buy the dry ones and now I am wondering if it would taste like cereal. Thanks for replying!

I do not think that it would hurt a person to eat dog food. I know that I have had a few kids that like to eat dog treats. I know it is an odd thing to do but they have done it. And believe it or not there are some dog food/treats that are hard to tell if they are human food or animal food. We had some dog treats that were peanut butter and banana. I hope everythings works out for you friend.

Humans should not eat canned dog food, the ingredients used are not fit for human consumption. Dogs have a different digestive system than humans and so can process food that we can't; likewise humans can process food that dogs can't. A single event of eating dogs food shouldn't cause a great problem, though your friend may suffer some stomach problems, nausea, sickness and diarrhoea mostly. If she's really worried she should see a doctor and she definitely should not eat more dog food! Birdie -

Oh no! I hope she will be all right.. Based on the previous response on your discussion, I think it is okay to eat dog or cat foods so.. it's all right then I guess.. But wouldn't that taste awful? ^_^

Nothing will happen to your friend, other than getting an upset stomach only because of the thought of eating dog food. Many older people in the US have actually have had no other choice than to eat it because of how cheap it is to buy.

She will be alright. Humans are able to eat dog food. As you will see in one of your other posts, people here in the US have done it because they cannot afford anything else. No sickness or illness, probably just shame for having to do so.

Yes humans can eat dog (and cat) food. For dog and cat food there is a special rule. They have to use meat/ingredients that is consumptable for human beings. As far as I know these are the only animals for which this is the case/law. So humans can eat dogfood.
