How is The Economy In Your Area?

United States

Are we still in a recession? i can not figure it out. I know that the unemployment is still high but I live in Austin, Texas and it seems like the economy is strong. There is lots of construction and new businesses opening. Yet, other businesses are going under. It seems like there are jobs available but many of these jobs are low paying. Some people are doing very well and other people are seriously hurting. What is going on in your community or in your region? Or in your part of the world? I am interested in both national and international viewpoints.

Its rough. We aren't having as many layoffs as before, but there haven't been any decent jobs to replace those that have been lost. There are a lot of contradictions going on here that is making things confusing. The government want people, particularly unemployed people, to go back to school for training for a new job, which is fine, but school has just gotten more expensive, difficult to pay for, and the unemployment system around here slightly discourages education. There are pockets around the city that are having a development boom which is nice, but this city is big, and has bad urban sprawl problems. Compounding the problems is a poor bus system, which just in fact today, has gotten worse thanks to more cutbacks, which is making public transportation even worse. This system is also hard for people to get to work, if there job is even near a bus route. Also, there are jobs available, but the pay for the jobs is very low for the type of work on is performing. I am amongst the unemployed myself seeking work, and going to school at the same time (this isn't easy), so I am experiencing firsthand of what this recession can do. I am in Michigan, and this state has been hit very hard by it

I know that Michigan has been hit hard by the recession. It seems like Michigan always gets it when we have a bad economy. I am in Texas and it seems that we are doing better than most of the country. Partly that is due to oil but Texas has low salaries and meager social services. So there are lots of low paying jobs and poor social services. I live in Austin. Some persons are doing very well and others not so well. Austin almost appears to be a boom town but it is deceptive. One group is doing very well and another group is having a real struggle. It is like "it was the best of times: it was the worst of times". That is why I can not tell how the economy is doing.

Personally I know people really struggling around here. The unemployment keeps on going up, cost of living keeps on increasing with lower paying jobs being offered while nothing tends to go down. I am really beginning to wonder if there will ever be a Fix for this solution, and what it would take? Seriously anymore people need to hold on to any type of job they are ever offered without continually screwing off and be more proactive to be able to fight back the economy and be a stronger willed person because of it.

Seattle is such a beautiful part of the world. Sorry to hear that the economy is poor. I wonder, what are the social services like? i thought that Seattle and Washington State were very progressive. In Austin, the cost of living also keeps going up and up. Everything is going up. The cost of food is outrageous. We have lots of low paying jobs and mediocre social services.

Crappy and I do not see it getting better anytime soon. I just want to bring one point I heard on the news this mourning about Texas. They were saying that Rick Perry can take credit for creating millions of jobs over the last few years but like you you said most of them are low paying. Now most of those people are all on federal food stamps. Not to get to political on this but Republicans are always talking about people are to dependent on the government, but what do they expect you can't live off of $8.00 a hour. I know people who make twice that much and are barely getting by. I think society's economy as a whole needs to be overhauled.

I am sorry to hear this. I thought that Indonesia took better care of its needy. Are there any social services or help for the jobless or homeless?
