My First Military Thanksgiving

I was 19 years old. I had decided since I was an only child I would let others take leave and go home to spend the holiday with their families.
I was stationed at Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington D.C.
The WACS had our barracks out at Forest Glenn Annex.
This was 1971 and we had rooms where there were 2 to 3 in a room. Downstairs of the barracks was this beautiful diningroom that no one used. It had a gorgeous large table and about 8 chairs.
Then there was a full kitchen.
I remember going around and finding out who would not be going home and said I would make turkey and dressing for Thanksgiving.
I was off the Wednesday before Thanksgiving day. So not thinking about our C.O. and NCO that was still in the barracks I started early that morning making the turkey. By noon here come SGT Garbrick asking me what I was doing. I laughed and said Making a turkey!
She said well that is sure obvious since the smell was going throughout 3 stories of barracks!
Since I had to work Thanksgiving on the Neurology Ward, the girls that were there and our Company Commander and NCO all had turkey and dressing whether they got it Wednesday or on Thanksgiving.
It was my first turkey I ever baked on my own and here it is 40 years later and I am making my 40th bird.
What a wonderful memory of how I got started making thanksgiving and giving to others and sharing.
Happy Thanksgiving to anyone that reads this!

Excellent -- you are remembering clearly about what happened when you were 19 years old. You enjoy cooking or making food of turkeys for thanks giving. When is the thanks giving this year? I think people will have holidays on account of that.

Hi ravisivan. Our Thanksgiving is Thursday November 24th. I know Canada has already had theirs in October.
Do you have something similar to a Thanksgiving meal?

I like your festival. never seems we honor the animals that we eat here. And it is quite right to honor the Sun that gives us the warmth and growth for our produce and even for the health of the animals.
Thanks for sharing. I hope you have a peaceful weekend anyway.
After 1pm tomorrow I will make my way to the recliner and cross stitch. The food will be over with. (Just hoping my kitchen fairy will show up to help me clean) My husband is good at eating and sleeping. My son is good at eating and running out the door with friends.
Only downfall of me making big meals LOL

marie -- In Tamil Nadu (India) we do not have a system of thanks giving like function. However in January every year from 14 to 17 we celebrate Pongal -- This festival marks our thanking Sun God for having given food produce (paddy, sugarcane etc). Plus we also try to feed specially the bull and cows and call it "Mattu Pongal" -- the services rendered by these animals are remembered and thanked.
People normally gather in their native place and then they go for fairs, exhibitions etc, during this Pongal festival.

You have so many wonderful memories. That was so nice of you to share your talents with those that were not going home. I bet that they think back on that Thanksgiving as well.
Happy Turkey Day.

What a nice memory of cooking your first turkey. 40 years later, you still like to cook! There is nothing better than a Thanksgiving meal with family and friends. It makes it much nicer (for me anyway) if you don't have to cook and clean up. Hope your day turns out as you hoped.
