Falling sideways or getting off balance

I'm doing a lot of that lately. Everyone knows I have nerve pain in my legs, feet and toes from my back. I have been getting off balance lately... like when I am standing at the sink doing dishes I will fall sideways and IF I didn't catch myself I would actually fall on the floor. I'm wondering if this is connected to the pressured nerves in my back.. I'll mention it to the doc when I see him next week if it keeps doing that.. but this is kind of bothersome... it causes me to stumble. There is nothing wrong with my ears.. so I'm thinking this must be back related or nerve related... your thoughts?

My sister did this yesterday while on a small ramp, and ended up falling into a parked car. Or rather on Sunday. She says she thinks she just slipped her heel off the side of the ramp, then picked up momentum and fell. She has a lot of congestion right now from her cold. She is also diabetic and her vision is not good. I do know, however, that I have a lot of pain in a shoulder and when I first get up I seem off balance. It is not just bothersome, it can be scary.

If I am standing still I will tip on occasion. I think mine is as much visual as anything. My sister has bad vision, made worse by diabetes and she has some neuropathy, but not as bad as she could have. She was worn out from not being able to stop coughing, and I know that did not help at all.

I just tend to tip over sideways for no reason... it doesn't happen all the time. Your sister may have some diabetic neuropathy that gets her off balance.

Don't just mention it if it continues. Tell your dr about this as it may be something that allows him/her to give proper diagnose of your condition. Balance is a neuro indicator and not just a nerve problem.

Well, it doesn't happen all the time. Today is the first time in a while that that happened. I don't go to the doc every time something goes on with me because of the expense... I have insurance but those 20% copays are ridiculous... I go to the spine clinic next week.. I plan to mention it then. I've been to neurologists before and they never found anything wrong in that department. I was falling then also.

I had an inner ear infection one time that caused me to fall a lot until it was cleared up. There is something in the inner ear that effects balance. Maybe it was just one of them flukes.

I would definately mention it to your Doctor when you see him, but I know a lot of times I have problems when I walk and many times might actually act like I am going to stumble or trip, and they say most of mine is due to Nerve damage as well as the Fibromyalga. Wishing you the Best.

I still do it from time to time. I've got to get my meds refilled from the spine clinic. I've been without for about a month now. My daughter flushed them when she thought they were causing me my speech problems.... but that wasn't the cause and now I have no meds.

I think you're probably right. I hope they can tell you something definitive.

It happened again today while I was at the sink washing dishes. My foot just turns over and I just fall over sideways... it was involuntary.. I really paid attention this time as to why I fall sideways.

I hope your are going to see your doctor soon! Yes your problem could be "back" related, but not quite where you expect. It could be in your neck. I have had the same problem and it was the result of my neck injury. It could also be a short circuited message from your brain to your spinal column. No matter what, falling or losing your balance and stumbling a lot is a warning sign that you need to get it checked as soon as possible. Even if the problem passes you need to bring it up to the doctor as it is important. I don't want to frighten you, but this could be a very important sign to a more serious ailment which needs to be treated. I ended up being in a neck brace for quite a long period of time to get the nerve released from the disk that was compressing it. It cleared the problem up, but the doctor told me that if I hadn't told him about the problem the situation would have become permanent. Please please get it checked and let us know what happens.

I'm sorry you had that but glad you got it seen about. I go to a spine specialist now. I've not been falling that way since he started treating me. Thanks

It is probably due to ageing or related to low BP. Check your blood sugar and BP regularly and ensure they are within the parameters.

No it's not due to those. My blood glucose is always within normal limits. And my blood pressure is controlled with medicine. It's normal because of meds. It would be high without them. I think it must have something to do with neuropathy or something from pinched nerves.

Hi PQ! Sorry to hear about your balance issues. I have some strange symptoms myself. I was diagnosed with Sacarilitis in my lower back, Bursitus in the joint between my pelvic bone and thigh and Fibromyalgia recently. I have a pain in my butt that they say comes from the nerves in my lower back. Now when I was washing the dishes today my left foot fell asleep. That usually happens when sitting. Now I get off balance when I get up or bend to fast. You definitely need to speak to your doctor about the balance issues. Did he give you some new kind of medication? That could definitly cause you to be off balance. That is what I believe is what makes me dizzy when I get up too quickly. Please let us know what you find out. And take care of yourself. Opal

Yes. You should mention your problem clearly to the doctor and seek his advice. I wish and pray PQ should get cured early. Your cat is looking very deeply nowadays. !!

Hi Opal. So sorry to read that you have so many problems. I tend to always tip and fall to my left hand side. The only change in med is lortab for pain. I'm certainly going to mention this when I see the doc. Hope you will be okay.
