Just trying to keep myself busy

Doctors have advised me to keep myself busy and walk, but walking, I avoid because of pain in soles of feet. I wanted that I should force myself to walk, so lastly I decided to keep myself busy in the renovation work of one of my homes. The mason and labors came today, work started, they will dismantle the existing structure first, it may take about 6 months to complete, you may ask why, this is because half of the week they remain absent on some reason or other. The time of work is 8am to 1pm, and 2pm to 5pm, but they come at 9-9.30am, go for lunch at 12.30, come at 2.30 stop working at 4.30pm; the daily wage is 350 rupees for mason and 250 rupees for labors. If you don’t watch they sit and gossip, so I have to keep going to my roof via steps and watch, this will be walking for me, though painful, but I have to. What about labors, masons at your place, how much you pay them daily as wage? Please respond and share your valued opinion. Thanks in advance. Professor ‘Bhuwan’. . Cheers have a lucky day ahead. 2/12/2011

Whenever we've had people come in and work at our home, we haven't paid them in terms of a daily wage, but instead we pay them for the job that needs to be done. So, the money that we paid for our windows was a set amount of money, regardless of how long it was going to take the installer to get the windows in at the house. Now, I assume that the company did pay the installers an hourly wage, but that wasn't for us to figure out.

I would mark their time and pay them accordingly. I would also be angry. I would tell them they will get paid a fair wage for a fair days work. Schedules are made for a reason. If they work five hours and are scheduled for eight they won't get paid for eight. They find a short check and that should do the trick.

I think that keeping yourself busy is one of the best things that you can do in your life because it means that you are getting the exercise that you need in order to keep fit, as well as keeping your mind active. One of the reasons that some people get depressed is because they don't have anything to keep their mind off the negative things in life and, with a little bit more activity in their lives, I think that fewer people would become depressed and the world would be a much happier and fitter place because of it.

Namaskar sir Our laborers are the richest community around. They earn a hefty amount. Work almost nothing. And apart from that live in forcibly occupied lands that in turn gets in their name (thanks to the Vote Bank Politics)... not to mention the benefits of BPL cards, the Re.2/- per kilo rice (that they later sell in the commercial markets @ prices you are aware of) So why should they work any way? I am pained to read that they continue doing so with an elderly person like you but it seems that it is normal business for them. Unfortunately, the 250.00 per day amounts to 6250.00 (assuming 25 days of work per month) and I get much less than that even though I am a computer or web professional

Constructions labour costs are going up. In fact Chennai we have thousands of people from northern states doing labour work for construction of bridges, buildings etc. Here seniors get 500-600 per day and juniors get ranging from 300-400 per day. I wish your construction work should go smoothly and should be completed within the time you have in your mind.

Yeah, some worker's are really like that. I am an engineering staff in my current line of work and i do have the responsibility of seeing to it that the operations in the plant are going smoothly. However, I do observe that most workers tend to idle during their shifts and try to roam around away from the eyes of their supervisor. This makes supervising really stressful, especially when these workers do excuses to not work hard or fast at all. This is a problem to such workers. They are not willing to work at all that is why their lives are not improving too. I have experienced too of trying to look into the construction works happening in our house before. I noticed that they only work hard whenever they see you coming to take a look at what they are doing or when you have given them some free snack while they are it doing the work. I think most people are paid at the minimum wage stated by the government, but some have higher pay class than that. I really don't have any idea on how much those who worked for our house construction are paid daily. I am not the one paying them so I really don't know stuff like that.

Do take care of your health before you take such tedious tasks at hand. Yes daily wage workers are very troublesome. They try to stretch the work as much as possible so that they are ensured of a job for some more weeks. One has to keep a strict eye on them to get the work done faster.

Hi Professor, it is pity to hear that you had met these kind of lazy laborers. Although i never engaged any house renovation job to outsiders, but i do understand about your situation. My friend ever came across this kind of problem, so they prefer not to pay daily wages to them. The best way is, paying after those laborers after they had completed their works. Indeed, my mom's doctor also advised her to keep active walking because diabetic people need to move around, so that their body system is functioning like normal. If my mom not walking for a day, her body will feels aching and numb. That's why, i see my mom also active walking here and there daily, only she don't walk very far. Only at nearby area in our home.

Hi professor. I just had a topic on lazy laborers, because we also just had a renovation in our kitchen. And just as you mentioned, they are always absent. They would request for a cash advance for the next day's work, and then the next day they won't come, but on another later date. And they work so slow. So, the work that has to be done over just 2 weeks took them 3 weeks! We pay them by the day, for PhP300.00. It's a good thing, they have finished what is to be finished. They will never ever be hired again for the next works. And besides it would be for a contract basis.
