hi friends.as usual wondering. it started when i saw Sachin captaining the mumbai indians . he is always at the mid on or mid off, giving instruction to fielders while shining the ball all the way to the bowling mark. so i started thinking. which is the best fielding position for a captain? the wicket-keeper position like dhoni and sanga? mid on/off position like sachin? midwicket position like ponting? or not inside the 30 yard circle at all? the last one wont work well because of the obvious. which is best suited? P.S. can anyone recall captain fielding at slip or some other position?

I think the best fielding position for a captain is on the field. That is all there is to it. There have been thinking captains who have been keepers, bowlers and batsmen. More often than not they have been batsmen because usually bowlers need to think more about how to get the batsmen out rather than thinking of the overall picture of the game and it is often quite difficult. But realistically speaking I think a good captain is one who has many ears. So he talks to the keeper, the slip players and to the bowlers and makes his decisions. So I do not think any specific fielding position is required for a captain. Cheers! Ram

I think that most of the captain like wicket keeper or slip positions. As we know that dhoni and sangakara stands in keeping positions and most of the rest captainst in slip positions. A person should be very accurate and good at these positions. So most probably captain used to have the position

The ideal position for the captain to field is anywhere close to his bowler and from where he can control his fielders. So ideally it can be mid on, mid off, mid wickets, slip position, cover point as the captain is specialized. I can recall so many captains fielding in slip position like Ajit Wadekar, Garry Sobers, Venkat Raghavan etc.. Captain has to interact with his bowler quiet frequently so it is not ideal for him to field deep even if he is specialized in that position.
