I live in England and the way the country is run is poor we are in billions of pounds of debt but instead of sorting this mess out and cutting spending we are giving money to Africa and other countries abroad. Surely we should sort our mess out at home before helping abroad?
What I would do is :
1) Put a cap on the ever rising petrol prices to stop them being stupidly high at the moment where I am there £1.29 a litre!
2) I would reduce the VAT back down to 17.5% instead of the 20%.
3) I would stop immigration into the country to help reduce the number of unemployed and benefit seekers going up.
4) reduce the benefits offered to people, I would stop immigrants getting on the benefit system unless they have worked in this country for over 5 years as it is sick that some people come over do not work and expect the state to give them money.
5)Except for the disabled I would reduce the benefits offered to the unemployed, housing benefits etc to force people back into work.
6) I would increase the base rate of interest in banks to attract savings again.
7) I would bring back the death punishment for certain criminals which would free up space in the prisons.
And finally I would remove the human rights from Illegal immigrants and send them back home.

What a chance to get our ideas out there. Just too bad the governments won't be reading any of these great ides. Our Republican candidates have some good ideas but not enough. To start with I would get rid of about half of the bureaucrats that are really the ones that seem to me to be running the government.
Our FDA has put in place enough regulations to fill a hotel room just this year. The Environmental protection agency has wanted to control farm dust. I would also get rid of the agencies that overlap as we do seem to have a few.
I would simplify the tax code so that any one can understand it.
I would get an amendment to the constitution for a balanced budget every year.
All government employees including congress get the same benefits as the rest of us.
Make it illegal for the lawmakers and employees to do any thing that is against the law for the rest of the country ,such as insider trading.
I would get the government out of the business of of backing and funding private business.
I'm sure that you have heard or read about the debacles with the green energy Solyndra loans that have cost the taxpayers over 5 billion dollars. They got the loan then a few days later went bankrupt. All of these thing would get the government out of the way for the private sector to get jobs going.
These things would be hard to do unless you had the backing of both houses of congress unless you are a dictator. Even then you would need the help of the rest of the government.

I would stop all the free perks our politicians get, they would get a wage and a lot of the things they get for free would stop and no more life time travel perks, they would have to have a lot more meeting on the internet rather than so many trips over seas, no more outrages dinner functions, they should be more like the rest of us, plus once a politician broke a promise they were elected in for another election would have to called and once they are caught out in a lie they would be sacked.

I don't know much about England, but it sounds pretty similar to the United States at the current state. We all facing such problem currently. Especially medicare. I knew that millions of people without medical insurance, and that we have to make sure that will happen. But currently we just don't have that much money on hand. I will find a way to cut back on spending and cut down the national debts too.

This is very nice because you just change so much. I think we just need everyone to know what he wants to achieve in life and how to do it.
you definitely have a clear position and it makes me happy and very much.
if i have this option would simply change the laws in our country and all will be taken because this is the problem of our country.
nice day!

Your plans to your country seem good and realistic.I wish you can rule england someday.:)
If I become the president of philippines I will do the following.
-I will do whatever I can to stop the corruption.Corruption destroys the life of common people.Instead of wasting the money for personal purposes,I will use the money of my country to build railways, airports, bridges, and many infrastructures related about travelling. If transporting of goods is easy, the prices go down.
-I will focus also in health and agriculture. It is better to have a healthy country than have a country with skyscrapers but have unhealthy people.
-I will decrease the tax.I know the tax collected is already enough. It seems to be insufficient because of the corrupt officials who put the money in their own wallet.
-I will introduce livelihood programs to prisoners to make them productive.
There are many things I wanna do to my country.I wish I can be its president someday.
