I suggest you have a dentist look at it. My son also has cavities in his baby teeth and the dentist said it isn't that bad and as long as he is in no pain, then allow it to fall out on its own. But if he does experience pain, then the dentist will have to pull it.

A cavity can be painful, so you need to be very careful about this. I think that a visit to a Dentist is very necessary. A 4 year-old cannot tolerate much pain. Please get him to brush his teeth twice a day and restrict his intake of sodas and soft sweets as much as possible. This fundamental oral hygiene habits will go a long way in prevention of dental problems. Chewing on a clove bud is also a good dental cleanser as well as a pain killer in case there is pain in teeth. Clove oil is available in all herbal stores. Application of this, temporarily deadens the nerve endings in a painful tooth and lessen the pain for a limited time.

As you know clove is very spicy and so is the oil. Your son has to tolerate that. Just dip a cotton swab in oil and hold it to the painful tooth. The pain killing effect will start in a minute or so. Since you are also from India, Clove oil is also stocked in medical shops.

Umm my daughter also has cavities in her milk tooth but i opted to leave it alone, as also advised by the doctor. He said it will eventually fall.. and new teeth will be growing and that one will needs proper care.

OK, but is there not any risk of the tooth getting more spoiled or any infection. I mean will the cavity remain as such and the tooth will break in its own time . I was just a little scared about this only as many people have told me that the tooth may pain or get worse.

Hi indi15, I don't think it is necessary to get your son to see the dentist at this stage. But if you really have to see a dentist make sure you go to a good dentist. Good meaning he is able to tend to small kids so that they will not be traumatized from the experience. Good dentists have the technique, skill and patience to distract and calm the little one. And most importantly to gain his trust. Trust me you will have a hard time to send your kid to the dentist the next time if his first experience has been traumatic. As for keeping the teeth and gums healthy, regular and thorough brushing and rinsing would be good. Also refrain from giving sweets, soda and biscuits especially before bedtime. If possible try to get your son to drink through a straw instead of drinking directly from the cup. This will minimize contact of the liquid with the teeth. Hope that helps. Have a nice day.

thank you succeednow, it is really important to consult a dentist who can cater kids teeth properly, making him comfortable so that his experience is good. I brush his teeth twice a day, and after he takes sweets (if he takes them at home in my presence).Soda he has not yet started, sweets i try to avoid as much as possible. I will try to implement your idea of drinking through a straw.

I would suggest filling the cavity. Since he is only 4 years old, there could be a few more years before the tooth is replaced. During this period, the cavity could go worse and thus giving him some discomfort and pain. As to ways to keep teeth healthy, it is the usual stuff. Brushing them correctly, flossing, and regular visit to the dentist.

Thanks for your response, but i guess filling a child's tooth would be very painful for him, never had this experience before. I do make him brush regularly, but still this happened, there must be some medicines also to keep teeth healthy.

Filling can be painful but having a toothache because of decay is worse. Brushing is one thing, did you ensure that he brush it properly? As for medicine, how about floride rinse?

Don't just decide on your own. You have to consult it with a dentist. The dentist will determine what will be done to your 4 year old son's teeth. As for me, should leave it. Since it will be replaced by a new one. The teeth is still developing because he is still a kid.

thanks cearn25, this is what i want to do. Even i want to leave it as such as it will break after some time. But the only concern is that it should not spoil any more so I am very regular in making him brush and avoiding sweets.

I think you'd better to take him to see a doctor and follow the doctor's advice. Personally, i think if the cavity is not serious, you can just fix it, while if it is a big one, i think the doctor will suggest to kill the nerve inside the teeth. You know, my son once had a serious cavity when he was young, after i went to the hospital, the doctor said the nerve needed to be killed first, i was not sure about the harmness of kill the nerve, and it will take several times to do it, i didn't follow the doctors' words, and pay more attention on my son to make sure he brush his teeth twice one day, and don't take too much sweets, well, now his new tooth grow out, and the bad one fell. I think it is an alarm to pay more attention on his tooth, because once there is a cavity in one tooth, it will be easily to develop another cavity in another tooth.

Thanx aprilsong, this is what i am doing, brushing twice, not giving much sweets and brushing teeth when he eats something sweet, hope his new teeth also comes fine. Doctors never suggest leaving tooth like that, they always recommend some treatment to avoid any chance of infection.

I'm not sure what you should do. I've never had a cavity so I don't really know what kind of problems they can cause. Didn't your dentist give you advice?

Good that you never had such a problem. Doctors always recommend a treatment, but i was hoping that the tooth remain in this condition only till it breaks so that the little child don't have to undergo fear and pain of filling the cavity or getting tooth removed.

You did not say which tooth is involved. A molar should be repaired without question. Other teeth might or might not need to be filled. It depends on how soon it will be replaced with a permanent tooth. Either way , see a dentist you can trust to give you factual information and not just try to get your money.

I'd suggest you to remove it, or if the cavity is not that wide the dentist will most likely fill it, either way its not good having cavity in a tooth and leaving it open as it decays those are toxins that can later contribute to heart diseases as it all goes into blood, quoting one doctor: a bacteria present in the dental plaque which causes tooth decay can cause blood clot in the arteries, eventually posing a threat to the heart. "This potentially fatal blood clot when released in the bloodstream induces heart attack. The formation of plaque on the gums leads to a chronic inflammation of the gums and causes inflammation of the blood vessels. That's why the accumulation of plaque in the arteries can induce heart diseases." so its good you look from every aspect at things like that. good luck!

you are very welcome :) yes, neither did I until I found out a few years ago and I too couldn't believe such a 'small thing' could cause such problems, but it can, so its better taking care of those teeth sooner than later. and I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you, just thought you should know about it, cause it's important, you know.

You are right, its so nice of you to give such information. Its really important to know such things. We should definitely start caring for our teeth as soon as possible before it gets too late.

Thanks ap0calyptic, but i am quiet scared with the information. I did not know this, that tooth cavity can turn into some thing so dangerous. You are correct, its not good having cavity in a tooth. I never thought of it from this aspect .

Hi indi in Britain children have regular visits to the dentist so that things like the cavity you mention can receive the required treatment, these visits are free for children. Four years old seems very young to have a cavity and you should have the advice of a dentist, I would think that the tooth should be filled so as not to promote further infection in the mouth which could be very painful.

Thankyou indi that is exactly why I like Mylot to get information from people around the world. How would I know that a dentist visit even for a 4 year old would be so expensive even if it was only for information. In Britain just over 60 years ago to visit a doctor or dentist we would have to pay. Now every one can visit a doctor and children under sixteen can visit dentist free of charge. It is not urgent that your son has treatment but I am concerned that he has a cavity at such a young age. This can be caused by high sugar drinks and sweets as well.

You are correct telmesh. Here in India first doc will charge for checking the problem, then if something is to be done then the charges are fixed according to the treatment. But its so good for people in your place, that they do not have to pay. I am always trying to keep him away from sweets, but still he is a kid,he will not stop.
