Paganism in Christianity

Some Religious groups are using graven Images or statues in worshiping God, especially here in the Philippines, worshiping idols, graven images is rampant . It clearly says in: Exodus 20:4-5 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven Images, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above. Thou shalt not bow down to them or serve them, for I the LORD am a Jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the Fathers upon the children unto the 3rd and Fourth Generation of them that hate me. My heart is crying for them because they are indeed in trouble :( What should I/We do ?

The best thing is not to mind what others are worshipping or doing. There are so many things happening about Christianity that if you engage yourself in it, you may end up getting more confused. Just try to do what you think is right.

The first thing would be for people to realize that everything not Christian is paganism. It is a generalized term used before people pushed Christianity on others. Technically there are a lot of other religions made well before Christianity even came into the picture and therefore its wrong to try to 'fix' them when their religion could in fact be the true religion. I would just leave them alone and go about your own beliefs. Christianity pulled so many symbols from other religions, and as long as you follow your beliefs there shouldn't be too much to worry about and for those people that read that Exodus verse you quoted. That means those pictures of Jesus that come in the mail for some people, the people carrying around crucifixes with Jesus' likeness on them, things with angels on them, and so on. If you follow it, then do it right. Those things are very much like idol worship because according to Christians your god is not a material thing so praying with likeness and such to your god to me sounds like blasphemy.

If these people claim to be Christians and are worshiping idols, gently and lovingly teach them what the scripture says and then pray for them. If they aren't Christians, gently and lovingly witness the gospel to them, and then pray for them. God is able to show them the way.

Paganism does exist long before Christianity. Paganism is part of history. Some claim that a lot of symbol even the Christmas day is adopted from paganism. According to book I have read, the celebration of Christmas as the birth of Jesus Christ is also the birth of Sun goddess. I don't care what people say about this and that. I am Christian and I believe in what I believe. I believe Jesus is the savior in my life. I don't worship Him using images or statues. I know that He is exist in me.

"Many Christian festivals have their origins in Paganism" No, that is false, a modern myth if you like, that Christians choose to celebrate there festivals around the same time and that some of the features of pagan festivals have been incorporated into them like decorating trees at Christmas is not sufficient to show that Christian festivals have their origin in Paganism Incidentally, a Pagan is a country dweller, one that lives in a non-bounded area. What you mean by Pagan is something more akin to indigenous religions all the best urban

"And thou shalt make two cherubims of gold, of beaten work shalt thou make them, in the two ends of the mercy seat. And make one cherub on the one end, and the other cherub on the other end: even of the mercy seat shall ye make the cherubims on the two ends thereof. And the cherubims shall stretch forth their wings on high, covering the mercy seat with their wings, and their faces shall look one to another; toward the mercy seat shall the faces of the cherubims be. And thou shalt put the mercy seat above upon the ark; and in the ark thou shalt put the testimony that I shall give thee." And more : "Moreover thou shalt make the tabernacle with ten curtains of fine twined linen, and blue, and purple, and scarlet: with cherubims of cunning work shalt thou make them." "You shall make a veil of blue and purple and scarlet material and fine twisted linen; it shall be made with cherubim, the work of a skillful workman." "And he made the vail of blue, and purple, and crimson, and fine linen, and wrought cherubims thereon." "He overlaid also the house, the beams, the posts, and the walls thereof, and the doors thereof, with gold; and graved cherubims on the walls." "The two doors also were of olive tree; and he carved upon them carvings of cherubims and palm trees and open flowers, and overlaid them with gold, and spread gold upon the cherubims, and upon the palm trees." So where is your Jealous God here ? Do you have any idea about icons ? Do you know what is the first icon ? Look here : "And He is the image of the invisible God, the first-born of all creation. For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities — all things have been created by Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together". Can you believe that ? For us Jesus is the image of the invisible God.

On that argument you could also argue that the god in Christianity admits there are other gods. In the ten commandments "Thy shall not have any other gods before me" That statement in and of itself is god admitting that their are other gods out there. For me who is of a pagan faith. I don't worship any idols or statues. I worship nature.

Hello carlotay123. Emporer Constantine decided that to make everyone get along in his kingdom, he would unify all beliefs, and make Christianity the religion. There is much peganism in christianity, like the easter bunny. All hallows eve. And others to name a few. I believe that we should warn people of the problems that will rise up once we do exactly what you say is being done. We need to get them to a group of believers and pray over them for forgiveness. They must need to want to change as well. Encourage them to read the Bible fully and that includes both testaments. They will see greater things once they have a grasp of both. I think you should go to them and tell them that you care for their wellfare and want to see them in the word, and living a good life. May YAHVAH bless you. :)
