This was a frugal Christmas.

Due to the fact that I have spent more money that I would have wanted going to chemo, having some help at the house and other side problems of my lymphoma, I decided to have a frugal Christmas. I only gave presents to the small fry. The teens all got eatables for the gathering, nothing else. I usually make some goodies AND give some money to the older grandchildren. But I skipped them this year. I did not put Christmas lights at home either, as I was going away for Christmas eve and for New Year. Electricity is something that I will be checking this year as a special goal. I am quite sure I can pay less if I take care. Do you have a New Year´s resolution as frugality goes? We might check after a time if we have saved any. Take care and share!

I didn't buy much for this Christmas and New Year too. I would rather stay home and go out less. Even for the New Year, my family and I avoid to go out for a grand meal or something. Rather, my mom cook at home, and we didn't invite many people either. For this year resolution, I vow to take care of my debt, and to pay off them as much as I can. So, I can be debt - free on my own.

Hear, hear! *raises vodka glass* I have the exact same resolution as well. I also resolve to work my seating apparatus off in the computer world to get as much money as possible from there. Best wishes on your own endeavour, we're all in on this together!

It seems frugal living is on the air! I want to keep on earning as last year online, although I will probably have less time. Fortunatly I have not got into debt yet, but that has been only because several members of my family are helping me out with some of the extras that I have had to pay for chemo.

Hi Marguicha. It is a shame that your health service is not free. It must have been hard for you to pay so much for your chemo. Well done for managing to have a frugal Christmas. I bought some Christmas lights for my little Christmas tree. I am only going to use my car on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. I will only be paying for petrol for my car once a month. It will cost me around fifty pounds to completely fill my car up with fuel. I am using the electric fire in my lounge in October, November and February. I am only having two hours of central heating per day in December and January. One is early morning and the other time is before my kids go to bed in the evening. I am trying to spend less on food and drink. Hug my dear friend.

I am glad that you have some insurance otherwise it would have been awful if you would have had to sell your house. If someone has cancer in my home country the National Health Scheme is free. I have Leo and he has many appointments. If I lived somewhere else his health care would be very hard to afford. He has had five operations: head, back, hips, leg and foot. Many hugs.

We have a lot of help in health service but it depends on your kind of insurance. I chose a better one, so there´s a big deductible but it covers better hospitals and quick health care. My family has been very helpful but cancer is a high cost illness. If I had to pay for all of it, I would have to sell my house probably. As it is, it is affordable but it would be better if it was completly free.

Here it depends on how much you earn. Poorer people have free healthcare but it is not as good as the one I pay for. Still the government pays for most of my chemo.

because i have more time than money, i always shop for the best deals and start Christmas shopping pretty much the day after Christmas! i also make gifts. This past Christmas, my daughter, hubby and i made bird house ornaments and for 2012, i think i will make each daughter a scarf and make some cross stitch Christmmas ornaments.

I have great expectations with the chnge of year. Making birds house ornaments sound very nice and caring. I love cross stitching too although I don´t do it anymore as my eyes are older. Have a wonderful 2012!!!

I had to put limits this Christmas. My youngest daughter´s partner has four children by a former marriage. They were coming for Christmas. And then there my 6 grandchildren. Way too much!!! So I decided to buy presents to the youngest kids who would be interested in toys. For the rest I made cupcakes and cookies.

Actually Marguicha, it is understandable if you are frugal this Christmas. Maybe the parents of the kids can explain it to them. That way, they might even be the ones who will give you gifts for Christmas. It is best that we always live within our means.

If my teen grandchildren do not understand, I think it is high time that they start to think about it. I don´´t really need any material thing and I do think that presents are just symbols for love giving. So no need to exchange more than hugs between adults.

Correct my friend! No amount of material thing can commensurate to the time and effort we give in taking care of the children. Hugs and kisses and a time to be able to play with them is more than enough. But since they are kids, maybe a homemade bakes cookies individually placed in small paper bags will already be really appreciated.

don't worry friend, it's been a frugal Christmas for most of us, I bought 2 sacks of rice (40 kilos each), and repacked it 2 kilos each bag so it's good enough for 80 people that I plan to give it to ( from the impoverished local community), really frugal cause in the years past it came with canned goods and goodies, corned beef and canned sausages, but this year my wife and I just had it come with an envelope containing 100 pesos ( a little over 2 dollars) sorry that's all we can afford right now, I understand your situation friend, I had 3 aunts who underwent chemo and I fully understand what a drain that could be, good luck and God bless....

Thanks for the BR, you see friend, modesty aside I was raised in a Christian home where it was always important to give than to receive, we were never allowed as children to go to our God parents house just so we would be given money on Christmas like most people do here, perhaps my parents wanted us to be givers more than receivers. I guess most already know that I was an elected official in my place during the late nineties and most people here has always been expecting something ever since, not to mention my 30 plus God children I have from the Catholic faith ranging from baptism to confirmation to matrimony. What most mylot members do not know is I ran a trading company that buys anything I can make a profit on as long as I can ascertain true ownership and make a profit on, no matter if it is scrap or a few grams of rusty nails or scrap plastic, to things like funitures and antiques etc..., if I make a peso profit then that's just fine with me,so I know exactly who to give to, I pick the most deserving although I always pray that God would bless me more

I think this Christmas was frugal for a lot of people. We had enough gifts, but nothing as big as we usually buy. Every year I vow to be just a little more frugal and to make just a little more money. Most of the time I do okay. This year I'm doubly determined to cut costs any way I can.

My youngest child is 30, but she didn't care anyway. I know it sounds strange to some people, but I agree with you that if things are a little tougher, people can be happier. We let material goods take the place of relationships and enjoying life as it is.

I don´t think children really care that much about big presents. Half the fun is to see what is inside the wrappings. I think that we can teach our children to have a better attitude towards material goods. We will all be happier when there are money problems.

I am sure that this year will be better. Last year it started very badly with a lymphoma stage IV. Everywhere I read about it the prognosis was worse. I had my chemo and the lymphoma is on remission. And I discovered on the way that it was much worse to lose a loved one than to be very ill yourself. So I did not even get depressed. Now I am thinkg what to do next

hi marguicha! i decided to have a frugal christmas as well. in fact i only bought gifts for my daughter and i gave cash to my newest godson, the son of a first degree cousin. that was it!!! i just did extraordinary kind things for the rest of my family. i did errands that i don't usually do or i did errands with extra attention and care that they'd notice how different and better it was! regarding being frugal this 2012, i gave myself a headstart. i actually paid off all my debt before the end of 2011. i can honestly say that i do not have any debt and i plan to keep it at that. the money that i've used to pay off my debt before will now be added to my monthly savings. hopefully, i would have hit my year-end goal by mid-year and then i can think of putting the extra cash into some sort of investment or business. i'm really feeling good about myself when it comes to saving this 2012 especially that i know that i've got some extra cash around. cheers!!!

hi marguicha! yeah, it really is a present to myself and to all those people that i love and care about if we think really hard about me paying off my debts. just so sad that others that don't think like that. too bad i can't please everyone. anyway, the amount that usually goes to paying off my debts for january will be stashed and saved accordingly. was thinking of rewarding myself and buying something that i really want or need since last year like a good belt or a new pair of shoes but thought otherwise. i'll hold off buying or rewarding myself for the longest time until i get at least three months equivalent salary as a 'emergency' fund. that is my new financial goal for the immediate future. wish me luck marguicha!!! cheers!!!

Hi Marg, indeed it is time for us to live a frugal lifestyle and save as much as we can, since everything is going expensive, year by year. Even i see my family, they don't spend much on buying and exchanging expensive gift with each others. Everyone buying gift that is within the agreed range price and exchanged with each others. We still able to feel the magic and wonderful of exchanging gift with each others. Indeed, this year we also planned to try to spend less on electricity as well, so that we could save more for other future expenses. Happy holiday to you and family...

I'm sorry to hear that you're in a chemo. I think that all of us should practice a frugal Christmas. Because life is more difficult in last year. My income is reduced quite much in last year. We should save for life in next year.

I haven't given gifts in many years. The closest I came this year was to get my brother a pedometer so he could keep track of how far he had walked/ran in a day, but he lost it before his trip. Oh well...I know when I was in the hospital, my brother put the thermostat in my apartment down to 61F and it took a couple of hours after I got home to warm it up to a comfortable temperature. I do need to pay more attention to the cost of electricity, but I prefer to be comfortable so I don't worry about it most of the time.

This year was an all cash Christmas. I did not use any credit cards which I am very happy about. I am looking for many ways to cut back on spending and am also looking for ways to spend less money. I am planning on obtaining copies of my credit report and seeing what I need to clean up. I will be speaking to my creditors to see if I can negotiate a settlement (on ones that are older). I am hoping to buy a house next year and want to clean up my credit so I can get a better mortgage rate.

That's really good for you, Christmas is about where the heart is, not how much you buy and how much you do. Edible gifts and home made gifts are the BEST kinds of gifts to give to anyone, hands down. This year I'll be curbing my personal spending, because I struggle with impulsive buying, but I'm way much better now than I was a few years ago. I think I won't buy any yarn this year because I have already enough yarn, and quite a yarn stash so I'll be getting in as much knitting as I possibly can. Same goes for buying myself treats outside, I'll make my own treats which are more healthier than those candy bars you buy at the checkout aisle in the store. Best of luck in your own endeavour

Thanks, friend. When I was young, only for birthdays and holidays did my mom buy some goodies. The rest of the year she made something nice for teatime on Saturdays to last until Sunday. With presents it was like that too: only presents in those days. It was unthinkable to ask for a toy on another opportunity.
