Being Told To Re-Apply For A Job You Have Done For Years:-(

I don't work at the moment but the closest I came to having to re-apply was in my previous employment at LCC, Preston, where two guys in another department were awaiting re-deployment..and my job was up for grabs as they were permanent and I was not at the time. It was up to them if either wanted my job..or not. I was told this bombshell a couple of weeks before Christmas a few years ago, so you can imagine what it was like..all very tense and worrying. Then (even though my immediate boss kept giving me the runaround) I was told in the New Year that my job was safe and I was to be made permanent. To say I was relieved was an understatement.
Others aren't so lucky though and some even have to re-apply for their own jobs. There is none of this "last in, first to go" anymore, something (I think) should be brought back.
Nothing can compare to the following story though. Please read it as it may actually HELP you to realise what is important in life. It is tragic what happened to this man and heaven only knows what was going through his mind at the time.
My heart goes out to his family but please don't judge him..it can happen to anybody.

The last sentence in the above article is particularly callous under the circumstances.

Hi Janey, Yes my wife has been asked to do this since the credit crunch. There were hard cut-backs and her department was closing down. In the end she got a job much closer to where we live now, and that has cut down a lot of commuting time. It is now 20 minutes to work where before it was just over an hour..
It is very sad for this man in Heathrow and such a waste of a life. Nobody can really understand the state of mind of another person who identifies so strongly with his job in life. I am pleased that I practice Zen as it a great support when we are going through change in life, as we learn experientially that everything is impermanent. I dislike it when things are changing, but I aim to just go with the flow and see what there is to learn from it, but I won't say it's easy..

I would think that with the vast size of the univers, we would be very arrogant to consider ourselves as the only form of life, like we used to think that we were the centre of the universe and that the sun revolved around us, not us around it. Yes, I think we would begin to strip another planet of its resources if we find such a place before long. But for the moment, we haven't got a ship big enough or fast enough to get to another world that has the same or similar atmosphere as we have.

Life is challenging in itself and I often wonder why this planet seems to be the only one with living things on it. What are your thoughts on that? Life on other planets? I do hope so. Mind you, we'd ruin another planet if we ever got the chance.

That is a tragic story. That's why these days there is no more loyalty with jobs. So, that's why people only give what they get paid, and believe me, that is not much. But the employers don't sam to care because they are making all the money. I feel bad for his family. Just remember one thing, the loss of a job is not the end of the world.

Poor man and now his family really do have an economic crisis. Just what he was trying to avoid. I once managed an "apply for your own job" recruitment exrecise and it was horrible. Making colleagues compete against each other because the company wants to reduce numbers is soul destroying. As the manager it was my fault of course! I did manage to help every single one of those cut to find new posts or get early retirement with pension though. Something that nobody did for me when I had was too sick to carry on!

Mum told me last night that a lady in Social Services had to re-apply for her own job a couple of years ago (which she was brilliant at by the way) and she didn't get it because people from another department interviewed her..and this lady was rubbish at interviews, which I can identify with because I am too. Anyway, needless to say she didn't get the job! HER job!
I only hope she's found something else because Mum said she was a lovely woman and sorely missed within the Council.

That is sad. I guess there's no more such thing as stable and secure job as this kind of thing certainly happen to just anybody. But it still sad that he decided to take option over the rumor as it wasn't certain he'll lost his job. I don't judge him but for something like this to happen...

I've seen grown men cry whenever they received a letter telling them they're no longer required after doing the job for 30 years or so. It's absolutely soul-destroying. I think the worry of this man having to re-apply for a job (a job he may have been interviewed for many years ago in a different manner) sent him over the edge because he MAY NOT HAVE GOT IT! You know what I mean?
Awful for his family though.

I have sympathy for the man who was 53 and Dad of three.I don't know If I can say he was killed by financial woes.If I take you correctly what you said is that happened a few years ago.Why was your immediate boss always hard on you? You are so honested in my opinion.I am not sure if he is just the guy who presented a gift to you for the sake of making a fool of you.

My immediate boss was actually a woman and they tend to be the worsed, especially the ones who KNOW they are no good at their job but pretend to know what they're doing. They blame their inadequacies on others.
She did get sacked eventually though.
