You're coming to the end of that novel and boom, brain freeze. How do you overcome writer's block?

First, I'd go take a break. Either lay down or a walk, any kind of different surroundings where I can just let my mind wander. Then it depends on how I want the book to end, happy? sad? shocking? Then I'd write down key words that remind me of these emotions and think of my characters and what would cause that effect. On my novel, I am going back and forth on how the end it. I have two options and probably won't decide until right before I submit it..

Nice! What I need is a nice little getaway so I'm not interrupted. It's hard to get creative when looking for someone's socks, keys etc. But you're right, I do need to think about whether I want a happy or sad or even shocking ending. Mmmm, I like the latter. Do you write a few different endings?

I don't know what your characters are like, but even a drive to the store, you can think of something and then jot down notes to type up later. I got a lot of my ideas for this book and the next one from dog-walking for my neighbor. Because my character has a child, when I am doing housework, I imagine my character doing the same thing, only adding to it, like another character visiting while the mom is preparing a meal. (Yes, I know, I take care of my son and yet my mind is always 100% on him, but in my story line..) As for writing a few different endings? Yes, I have written 2 different endings for my book, and I had to do that for my Creative Writing class last quarter, it was fun..This quarter though, I am taking poetry and I think one of our final assignments is to change our poems..Ugh, I am not into writing poems and this guy wants me to change something I struggled to write in the first place??? Anyway, like I said, yes it would be nice to "get away" from it all, but sometimes only a 5-10 minute break to let your mind wander is good enough..:) Let me know how it turns out, okay???

Move on to something else Get my mind off of it for a few days. then I can go back to it with a fresh attitude. Sometimes if I work on another element of the story, like another scene that I want to do, then I can come back and do the other stuff later. Making sure you have a very good outline too. If you have the framework you are much less apt to get a block.

That is actually a big problem of mine. They call me the Pantser. I write by the seat of my pants, so to speak. And I have a very hard time writing that outline. As a matter of fact I don't write them at all. I do need a fresh new perspective though.

Well, a outline will help you organize your thoughts. If you come to a block in the road then a outline will help you to see where the holes and where you need to concentrate the work. I do usually use an outline either because most of the story is just in my head.

I have not been in that position. I can give generic advice, though, and will not be offended if it does not work for you. Number one, do not think about it (easier said than done).Number two, go out and enjoy nature in some form. Three. Find some children or other very creative and uninhibited people to be around.

Actually, it's that time of year to start taking care of the garden again. It's a little flooded and weeds are sprouting through the bricks. Sitting in the garden when it's in full bloom is always a nice break.

don't be so hard on yourself! i think writers are the worst because we get so frustrated when we have writer's block! take a break, read or work on another project. read the book 'bird by bird' by anne lamot. it totally helped me when i had writer's block!

I just take a break from the writing when this happens to me. But then I start to look for topics online. Yahoo Answers is a great place that takes away the block from me. I see a few questions and try to come up with answers for them. That totally allows me to generate two or three posts.

Looks like the consensus is to take a break. I'll just make sure it's not a really long one.

When I have writer's block, I usually forget about the assigment and do something else. An idea usually comes when I'm not thinking about it. My brain usually functions better at night so I usually overcome it when I'm trying to sleep, which is ironic.

Yes, it might be time to put it aside for just a little bit. I think my character crept into my dreams the other night. A little scary.

I like to go out and have a nice cup of coffee, and just get away from what I am doing, or focus on something else for a while, and see if I eventually get inspired. Like anything else when stuck, if you concentrate too hard on writing when you have no idea what to write, you'll just frustrate yourself, and make the situation worse.

Very true ... and I'm acquiring a taste for coffee. It's usually iced though. Maybe I'll bring my computer to Starbucks.

Change your focus. Draw something, bake cookies, tear pictures out of a magazine and glue them together. Go analog. Take out a real notebook and real pen and write. Anything that comes to mind. It could be related to your novel or just free writing on whatever, just as long as you are writing something.

Oh, I like that idea ... actually write with a real pen on paper. Nice. I like the baking cookies idea too.

Outlining is a good start. Then just write what's in your head. Don't edit, don't edit, don't edit. Just write the first draft. Then edit, edit, edit. But I digress. Just write.
