I found a site that mentions taking the stumps of romaine and putting them in a container of water. http://threepsandq.wordpress.com/2011/12/11/peculiarities-and-plants-romaine-lettuce/ Has anyone tried this or had any success? I need to buy some lettice myself and give this a whirl. As I love the artisian I can buy at Aldi and if I can get a bit more life out of it for very little effort or cost it's worth a shot to me.

This certainly sounds likely, so long as the heads have simply been pulled from the ground and washed (they should have some root left). Most Romaine lettuce I buy (from Tesco) has been trimmed so that the growing stem/basal plate has been lost. I don't think that would work.

Maybe using one a sump from a luttuce from the farmers market would do better?
