As I have mentioned before my husband and I want to visit Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. I am trying to figure how much money we need. I can find the prices of hotels and plane tickets online, but I am not sure how much money we would need for other things like water, food, a taxi from the airport, entrance fees and all those things.
I would like to ask mylotters from those countries or mylotters who have visited those countries if they can tell me something about the cost of living for instanse how much it would cost to have dinner at a restaurant (that depends on the restaurant of course, but just some kind of general idea of the costs) I am also interested in the price of bus tickets in Cambodia and Laos. We are going to travel from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh in Cambodia and in Laos we are going to travel from Vientiane to Vang Vieng and from Vang Vieng to Luang Prabang.

I would like to mention that all the Lonely Planet suggestions for accommodation were full except one so this came as a shock. I found that there wasn't a child price on the buses so three tickets each time came as a surprise. I noticed that taxi prices varied. I would suggest you to book your accommodation in advance. Also I wanted to take a bus and they were full so I had to fly instead. Good luck planning your trip to Asia.

It sounds like it would be good idea to book our accomodation in advance. It is not nice to walk from place to place just to find out that every place is full. I have tried that (in Europe) and I ended up in a very expensive hotel. I didn't want to stay in such a luxurious hotel, but I had to find a place to spend the night so I didn't really have a choice. Which places in Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam did you visit?
We are going to start in Thailand and after that we are going to Cambodia and Laos and the last country will be Vietnam. We are going to travel by plane, bus and train. We will buy the plane tickets in advance and I hope that we will be able to get bus tickets and train tickets when we arrive.

Can I make a suggestion? It would be good to travel to the north of Thailand and finish it off at Chiang Rai. Then cross the border to Laos and stop at Vientianne. Then you can take a plane to Luang Prabang before heading to Siem Reap in Cambodia. Then take a bus to Phnom Penh in the south before heading to Saigon in Vietnam by bus. Then you can take a plane or train ride up to the north of Vietnam visiting Danang, Nha Trang, Hue and Hanoi before heading back to Bangkok by plane. That is if you are getting back to your hometown via Bangkok.

Sorry! My mistake... It should be in Udon Thani and not in Chiang Rai for you to cross to Vientianne in Laos...

Hello Porcospino :)
I went to Phuket, Thailand about 2 weeks ago with my friends on March 9-14.. It was so great! I love to visit Thailand again on my next holiday trip but I will choose to go to Bangkok, and I have a plan to go to Vietnam too next year.. ^^
Where do you want to go to Thailand? And where are you come from? I’m from Indonesia, so the airplane tickets from Indonesia to Thailand is not quite expensive..
For the airplane tickets, I bought them from AirAsia and it cost me about IDR 1,400,000 (let say that $1USD = IDR 9,300) all in fare with return tickets and sharing luggage with my friend..
For the hotel, I booked 2 hotels (1 in the Phuket Town, and another 1 near Patong Beach) from www.agoda.com and the total is about IDR 2,200,000 for 5 nights and it’s cheaper to book your hotel via online. And if you go to Phuket, I recommend you to stay in Sino Inn Hotel, the room is large and located in Phuket Town and very strategic with the Phuket Center Festival and Weekend Market..
For the tour, I booked them from the Phuket airport (Phuket Funtasea, Phi Phi Island, and James Bond Island) and it cost 4,200 Bath per person.. And the taxi or tuk-tuk rate is depend to the destination and the price is so variety and you can charter it for several destination for about 1,000 Bath.. It all depends on the negotiation between you and the driver..
And for other countries, I don’t know about them.. But I will find information about Vietnam..
Hope you have a great holiday!

Thanks for sharing your experience
I am from Europe (Denmark) and the trip to Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam will be my first trip to Asia. In Thailand we plan in visiting Bangkok and Ayutthaya. We thought about going to Phuket, too, but we have limited time as we also want to visit the other country, so we are going to save that for another trip.
You wrote that you booked your hotels through Agoda, I plan on using agoda, too. We want to book all of the hotel rooms before we leave. 1000 Baht for taxi that is less expensive than the taxis in my country. The things you wrote about negotiation with the driver is useful for me, I am from a country where taxi prices are fixed, so it will be a different experience for me to be able to negotiate the price.

Large portion of the cost for the visit may come from your plane ticket and hotel room, while other expenditure like food, water and most other things are cheap compare to western world. If you spend several hundred for the same visit in Europe or US, then may be half or 2/3 of that amount will be enough for your travel in IndoChina in US dollars.

I am from Western Europe and my own country is not a cheap place to visit, so I imagine that IndoChina will be very different from the prices that I am used to. At the moment I am trying to find out how much money we have to save up for the trip. If we can afford it we are going to travel in November and December this year.

I think the living expenses in these 4 countries are quite cheap. If you have the airfare and hotels, you need not worry anymore. Average meal from those countries would range from USD2 - USD3 from food courts and the likes. If you are brave enough to eat on the streets and try some local delicacies, USD2 below would be ok. But better budget it around USD3 - USD4. But if you want to try something fancy, better allot much much more. A budget of USD6 - USD10 would be enough for a nice local restaurant. I would like to remind you that this is per person. If you like, I can recommend some restaurant. Just remind me before you embark on your journey... :D As for the taxi, I am not quite familiar with Laos. With Vietnam, taxi from the airport is quite cheap. It should only cost you USD10 or less if you are staying in District 1. Also in Cambodia, the taxi from the airport to your hotel would be quite cheap since the airport is located near the city. Though I am talking bout Siem Reap here. I have never been to Phnom Penh yet. But as for Thailand, better arrange for your transfer before hand or take the bus since the airport is outside the city. As for the entrances to museums and some parks, I am not that familiar with that since most of the time I get a package from a tour operator. I can recommend some which offers the cheapest and that has been tested.

Thank you for your response, it is very useful for me
The food sounds very cheap compared to my own country. In many restaurants in my country we have to pay at least $30 per person. Yes, please recommend some restaurants. I will send you a PM before our trip
I am also interested in hearing more about the packages from the tour operators that you mentioned. I am not sure if we will be able to travel this year. We have saved up some money, but we still haven't got all of the money that we need. If we don't have enough money this year we will travel next year instead.
