Peas Please Me

Peas - those little green balls of goodness that kids (and some dogs) avoid eating all too often. I've always eaten peas. It was one of those vegetables I was willing to eat as a child. I loved them nestled in my mashed potatoes - I'd make a small nest in which to place them and then cover it all with gravy. I also liked the peas and carrots that came in frozen TV dinners. I still eat them with mashed potatoes and gravy and still enjoy the peas found in frozen dinners, but I also now enjoy fresh peas on salad. Although I tend to drown them with salad dressing, I enjoy biting into their little burst of sweetness as I'm eating my salad. My mother would grind them with leftover roast beef and gravy into a meat mixture that she'd use as the base for Shepherd's Pie. The leftover mashed potatoes would go on top. You could never see what vegetables were in there and their taste didn't stand out, but their goodness permeated the entire dish. Do you like peas? How do you enjoy them most?

Hey, jerzgirl. I love them too, and would eat them all of the time. When I was younger, I would eat them by the can. No joke. My brother liked them too, and he ate them in many odd ways. He even got good enough to eat them with a knife. I always have at least 5 cans on hand. They are great. Have a great day.

I remember a time in my younger years when my pantry was so empty all I had on hand was instant mashed potatoes, canned peas and chicken bouillon cubes. I enjoyed a lot of mashed potatoes and gravy during those times. Lost weight, too, although it probably isn't the recommended method.

You put actual green peas in split pea soup? I thought that was just dried peas. I'll eat that, but it's not my favorite. I like it flavored with ham, but it's too starchy for me to really enjoy. I like peas in rice pilaf or in Basmati rice, too. I haven't been here in a while, so thought I'd do a few posts and answer others to not lose money. I'll try to come back more often.

Generally, I only like peas in different kinds of salads. I guess that is because that is mainly where I've tasted them. Rarely were peas just served as a side dish in my house. Did you know peas are an aphrodisiac? The same ingredient in chocolate that makes it an aphrodisiac, is also in peas.

I ate them as a child, but finally decided, like a number of other foods, that I really didn't like them. I do, however, like pea soup.

I really like peas, too. But I mostly east canned ones and usually have them five nights a week with dinner. I used to really like the canned Lesuer peas but they are just too expensive for me now and I settled for the cheapest that I can find on sale which is usually Libby's that I stock up on when they are on sale. I like most of my food separated so I like to eat my peas by themselves.
