My friends and I will go on a walking tour around Intramuros later. For our western friends, Intramuros is the walled city here in Manila that was the like main or capital of the Philippines during Spanish colonial times. Unlike many historical sites within Metro Manila, Intramuros has managed to survive the ravages of commercialism and change that has destroyed so much of our art-deco buildings.
It has been ten years since I last walked through the streets of the walled city. I remember that I used to walk the parapet on the walls that used to be guarded by the guardia civil. I don't know if it's still the same, but I recall that there are some streets that are still cobbled, like in Vigan. I am a little excited and apprehensive of what I will find later.
I was able to see old (pre-WWII) pictures of Manila that showed how beautiful it really was. It includes the Pasig river and Binondo estero that is now black, smelly and dirty. Back then, these two river ways were blue and had small bancas or sampans that were a means of getting to a fro in Manila that time. My father who was born in 1935 was lucky to have experienced Binondo estero as blue, also the Pasig river. He says that as a child he used to swim in Binondo estero. Now, I cringe even at the thought of dipping my finger in that black water.
P.S.
I don't own the pictures, but if you are interested in our culture and history, search Nostalgia Manila on FB. He has a great collection of old photographs of old Manila. It will make you sad to think why Manila is in such a state as it is right now.

this is a very nice topic! eventhough we were not born during those times,i am interested with this one.so nice of you sharing where to search.this will help young children nowadays learn more about the history of manila.it is really saddening not only in manila.even in the province nowadays you see the mountains being flattened by a bulldozer.and those hundreds of years of acacia trees along the roads being toppled down that gives shade to motorists

If we are going to look back on our history, we can say that a lot of changes has already taken place. The increase in the population is one factor of this changes. More people, more houses and less spaces.More people, more needs and more pollution. The technology has also its own contribution to the changes that has been happening. The number of factories increases too together with the number of people. The smoke that comes from factories and different vehicles add to the pollution. As years pass by, worse things happen. As what many says, change is the constant thing here in earth. We cannot avoid it. And I know that as we move forward, there will be more changes that sure to come.

Well, I also visited Intramuros two times and I loved it because it is a place creeping with history. I could just walk and walk and find something interesting and something that is connected to the past. Literally, I could lost and I mostly likely not complain. Although, I most likely visit it when the sun is much more kinder in distributing its rays.
I have to agree that sometimes being nostalgic gives a bittersweet feeling. probably because the good thing in the past are now considered worthless today and now. Personally, I wanna blame someone but blaming doesn't do something productive. Thanks for recommending Nostalgia Manila. I'll check out his profile.

Wow, good luck on your tour in Intramuros, I hope you have a great time. I was there a couple of weeks ago, and I enjoyed it immensely. I love how they were able to somehow preserve the place. Intramuros indeed is one of the historical places here in Manila that we can be proud of.
I was not aware that there is a page dedicated for nostalgic things in Manila at Facebook. I will definitely check that out. I am really interested in seeing how Manila looked before as compare today. Thank you for sharing this information.
