My grandson found a baby duck. He says he looked around for the mother and didn't see her so he brought it home. They(his mom and grandson)brought it up to show it to me and we all pretty much fell for the little thing. It was so cute! My grandson was of the opinion that we would keep it. I asked my daughter if it wasn't a better idea to call the humane society. She agreed with me. So I called and got their voice mail message and the correct number to call. The bird refuge place here turned out to be one where I put in some time years back and was just up the road. I called them and we took the little duckling up there. I discussed with my grandson on the way that he had done a good thing and that the duckling would be better off there. Also that in the future he needed to be sure to look around for the mother cause he(grandson)wouldn't want to be orphaned and away from his mother. Right? He seemed good with that. Your thoughts. Have you found a wild animal? What did you do?

We live within 30 miles of a state park and if we find a wild animal baby without a mother, we take it there. We took a baby bunny there many years ago, so I know it was well cared for..:)

Yes we are fortunate to live near a state park, but what about nature preserves or other parks like an audubon society? I know that if we found something and still lived in the city, there was still various places that would take an injured or orphan animal.

I live in a large area and they have a refuge or something for every kind of animal.

That would be the thing to do. Our state park is a ways away.

When I was younger my family actually found an abandoned baby duck too. My family has alwyas been big time animal lovers, and we did end up keeping the little duck for years. We raised it into it's adulthood, and when he was probably a few years old, and old enough to care for himself, we released him back into the lake where we'd found him (the lake was ltierally across the street from out house). We would go to the park and always see him there.
When I was little we were also finding baby birds/injured birds all the time (and had people bring us baby/injured birds they'd found). We would nurse the birds back to health/keep them until they were old enough to fly, then we would release them.
When I was just a baby (or maybe I wasn't even born yet) my mother actually cared for a possum (or maybe it was a raccoon lol). But either way, it was a real wild critter. And she took care of it until she could release it into the wild, knowing that it would be okay.
It was always fun caring for the animals until they no longer needed us. BUT before anyone even considers trying to take care of a wild animal, they have to know how to do it right! Because caring for an animal isn't just about keeping it safe, you could do more harm them help if you don't know how to do it.

Oh I understand why not everyone would be able to keep the animals they find, but it's just as good that you found a good place to take the duckling. That's what we do now with any injured/baby birds we find. They go to a bird rescue that's about 5 minutes from us. We just don't have the time anymore, everyones either working or in college.

If we lived in a place of our own maybe we could have kept it awhile. We live in housing and there are all kinds of rules. It must left you with some nice memories when you were young and taking care of the animals. My grandmother was like that.

This is a memory and lesson your grandson will never forget. Well done!
As for me, several winters ago I noticed over the course of a few days that my dog was 'mothering' through the fencing of her dog run a small puppy. She would seem to be talking to it, feeding it and generally interacting with it. It was so sweet to watch. But every time I got outside (winter and all the stuff I had to put on first) the puppy was no where to be found. This went on for awhile. Sometimes I would see the pup and sometimes I wouldn't. I took to giving my own dog extra rations as I knew she was feeding the pup. One day my hubs called while I was watching the two of them out the kitchen window and I described the pup to my husband. He started laughing and told me to leave them alone. That was no pup........it was a coyote!

I would have done same as your grandson did when momma duck doesnt turn up to get her small one after quite some time.
We had some small blackbirds which had fallen out of their nest as guests in my childhood but as they were badly injured they didnt make it for longer than a day or two most of the time. so sad cause i would have loved to rescue them and see them grow then release them into nature when they are old enough for this.

But I wonder if the mother was near by and he just didn't care to look very far. Some animals can't live in the wild if they are with humans very long.

cute duck story here long before I was born...... a duck from the nearby pond/small river thought that the small pond in my parents garden is a better place for it and made it its home. Unfortunately later it disappeared.....

What an exciting day you had! I bet that your grandson was very excited and I commend him for rescuing this duckling. I am so glad to hear that you found people who know how to care for them. Poor little duck, all alone. :-(
I have found wild animals. Mostly birds. I once found a male cardinal who was very confused and I kept him until he got better. Also, baby rabbits that we nursed to health. A baby squirrel.
In these cases, I called my veterinarian and asked advice on how to care for them, and then I and my family cared for them.

Those sound like fine adventures you have had. We live in housing with alot of rules and we just can't have alot of animals. If we lived on our own it would different.

Well, I certainly think that no matter your living conditions, you did the best thing for that little duck! In my experiences, if we hadn't cared for the little critters no one else would have. I would love to have experts in the field nearby!

Bringing the Baby duck to somewhere like that I am sure was the Best thing for him. I know they are cute to look at, but without the proper care, it might not have a chance to survive. It is always a good thing when you see any animal that is in the wild, and sometimes not to see if their is a Mom around, or are they a pet that might just be lost. Glad you could help show your grandson this, and help this little duck out.

I never found a wild animal but have taken in many stray cats over the years. I just can't see a poor animal out to fend for itself. It breaks my heart

I think animal welfare here in my country will not waste their time just for a loosing duck. Maybe if wild animals they will but as cute as duck they will not. Most of the ducks here in my country are pets, they used to own by a family and they sell of cooked it. Maybe if it happened to me I will just try to look for some family who also a duck raiser and give the duck to them so that they have company.

That would be good. I like the idea of pets having company.

That was innocent and cute of your grandson. Most baby ducks will always stay with the mother as she won't leave them. It's possible something happened to her. Years ago my dogs found a sick groundhog in my back yard. Neither hurt it thankfully, so I just brought it inside my apartment (at the time) and put it inside an old cardboard box with some water and towels. I then called animal welfare and told them about it.
They were honestly surprised that the ground hog didn't bite me. I told them it had been very docile, which I am guessing was because it was ill. They came a couple of hours later and took it with them to treat it back to health and release it back into the wild.
Then last year one of my older nieces brought in a baby raccoon that her dad was caring for. Its mother had been killed and it was the only survivor. They didn't have anything to feed him so I gave them a kitten bottle and kitten formula. I figured it was close enough to what could feed it. I honestly don't know what happened to the raccoon after that as she's never told me anything else, and I haven't asked.

It was innocent and cute wasn't it? I was pretty proud of him. That he didn't throw a fit when I said we should probably take him to the bird refuge. I thought he was pretty grown up about it.
